Has anyone changed any of the D-8's sockets? Where? One of mine seems to have started doing that intermittent contact problem plaguing all mini-plug connections, and I may have to change it. If I do so I'm considering changing all three. Has anyone tried replacing these dreadful connectors for something slightly better, like those screw-in mini-plugs now sony and others use? Unfortunately I have not seen any of those connectors myself, so I don't know if it's possible doing so. But it may improve a painful problem plaguing these portables. Carlos ------------------------------ From: Lackofdave@aol.com Subject: Dashboard Confessional Spring tour/new "almost" official taping policy Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 16:20:51 EST Hey all. Below is the schedule for Dashboard Confessional's spring tour. I'm currently working on a taping policy to present the band since they are very interested in having people tape openly at the shows. Most likely will be mic stands at the back of the venue, no SBD access kind of deal. I will update the list when I have something more definite on that. The group's last tour sold out almost every show so if anyone's interested I'd suggest buying tickets soon. In case you've never heard of Dashboard its an acoustic rock act that has a punk vibe out on Vagrant Records. Of course I'm always looking for 2000/2001 shows to trade. A discussion of an an issue needn't and more importantly, shouldn't be a flame war. I don't believe this was (a flame war) even though some people posted some things attacking an individual's character etc. rather than debating the subject matter. A good, in-depth discussion of an issue is healty and necessary whether it's popular or not. ------------------------------ From: marco man Subject: Selling Dats Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 13:50:04 -0800 (PST) Since this topic won't go away, I'll give my 2 cents worth. Go ahead and flame, I really don't care. Basically, I go to shows and record them for my personal use. If I determine one day I don't like music or change formats, I'll never expect to get reimbursed anything. It is my hobby for crying out loud. Sure, recording had seen many changes recently and many people are changing formats. Deal with it. If you decide to ditch DAT for say a laptop rig, that is your choice. Again deal with the decision you make. I am amazed at the entitlement that I sense from some of the posts on this subject. Just because you choose to liquidate your DAT collection does not entitle you to get reimbursed at full price. PLEASE! It doesn't even entitle you to half price reimbursement. Bascially selling DAT recordings is wrong. Those a-holes on E-bay could ruin it for everyone. Sending you used, nappy, old DAT tapes to some newbie for brand new DAT tapes and selling those new tapes is also wrong. I'm gonna keep all my old DAT tapes, just in case I need 'em. Question: I believe some of my DAT recordings were made at 48 khz. Now I wish to make a master CD so I can run off CD-Rs of my music. The dos and donts page says: Do record at 44.1 khz if you expect your material to end up on CD. Although DAT's 48 khz sampling frequency theoretically gives better high frequency response than 44.1 khz, the real world difference is negligible. Material recorded at 48 will have to undergo a sample rate conversion to 44.1 khz prior to appearing on CD, which costs between $5O and $100 and can degrade the sound to a minor degree. Does this mean I cannot run my DAT into the digital "in" on my CD-R machine to burn CDs of my music? If that is the case, can I buy a sample rate converter to connect between my DAT and my CD-R machine? What are my other options? Thanks. "hey, i taped your show. if the tape comes out well, i'd like to send you a copy". most bands are real excited, and ask for a CD of it. one band wasn't too thrilled, and asked me to keep it to myself, said they were paranoid about bootleggers, etc. i assured em everything was and would be fine. i gave em copies. i kept taping em. they seem cool with it now. or at least tolerant. most bands don't like tapers because they don't understand. once they see that you're just a fan who wants to listen to the show after the fact, they soften up. while there are a few militant taper-haters out there, who you really wouldn't want to go up to after the set and brag that you'd just taped them, these people can usually be spotted from a great distance, and then avoided. so, next time you tape someone, who doesn't appear to have a major authoritarian complex, go on up and "confess your crime." quite likely, you'll end up buddies with them, and they'll support your taping in the future. they'll help you out, and spread the word to other bands, too. we'll all benefit, everyone will be happy, and there'll be better tapes more widely available to our community and beyond. good luck to everyone rob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ From: Jagjit Chadha Subject: Soundforge question Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 00:56:25 -0800 This question is for a friend of mine. *please refer any replies to his email address: espring@calpoly.edu* Here's the question. I do have one thing that was brought to my attention by someone who got the show from me. On the 2nd track of Disc1 of Phil's set(Golden Road) at roughly 35 seconds after the start there seems to be some static of some sort(in the backgound). This lasts on and off for about 10-15-seconds. The MD5 checksum was a-okay. I even extracted that track from a disc that I burned and EAC reported no errors. Has anyone else mentioned this to you? If anyone has suggestions of a better list to which to post this, please let me know I need a preamp that will do the following: * Allow me to attach all my components and record between them accordingly * Provide Dolby Digital six-channel output * Provide phantom center setting These are the sources I want to attach to the thing: Cassette Deck (in/out) Computer (line-level RCA, in/out) CD DVD (coax digital) Tuner VCR (audio in/out ) others, nice but optional: Phono Video source switching DSS Multiple video outs Second tape (line) in/out As you might can tell, I'm new to all this, so I'm not sure video signal switching is all that important. Further, I'm pretty sure most decent Dolby Digital preamps will have elaborate video switching no matter what model I look at. I'll be running all six channels out to three Proton D1200 amps for juice, so a clean signal path is, of course, very important. HOWEVER, so is the bottom line. I'd really like to meet my needs for $500 or less. I have read some horror stories about some Adcom DD Pre gear from the last couple of years... True? I'd love to hear suggestions, on- or off-list. Thanks!! Bandwidth tax: B & Ps of Zero 3/21/92 (2 SHN, 3 audio discs) to whoever wants it. This is a fantastic show from a truly amazing band, and if you haven't checked them out, you're missing something. IMHO, anyway... ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
