From: "Mr. Data" <avan.heyst@quicknet.nl> Subject: DAT to CD recording Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 22:48:31 +0100 "Does this mean I cannot run my DAT into the digital "in" on my CD-R machine to burn CDs of my music? If that is the case, can I buy a sample rate converter to connect between my DAT and my CD-R machine? What are my other options?" 1st: Yes, you can make a digital -copy!!- with an internal or external sample rate converter (SRC) to CD-R. 2nd: It's beter to use a CD Recorder with an internal SRC to make copies with DAT start id's. 3rd: BEST!!!! Wait untill a standalone DVD audiorecorder is available on the market with digital i/o to make a digital -clone!- from your 48 kHz masters. So keep your tapes!!! Mailto:avan.heyst@quicknet.nl
From: randy@monkeybiz.Stanford.EDU Subject: hiding tracks on a cdr Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 14:32:08 -0800 (PST) thought this topic was covered awhile back, but didn't find it in the archives... anyway, I've started making mixedmode cdrs (data + music), so as to include the printed label (as a pdf) and a text file (describing the disc contents), and possibly photos from the show (depends on if they fit..) in a 'data track' recorded at the head of a disc. So if i have have 9 audio tracks, popping a finished cdr into my home stereo cd player gives tracks 2-10 as the show. so far so good. the problem is that track 1 (the data) gets played by my player...and while the resulting noise might be good for burn-in or getting rid of late-night guests, i don't want to hear it. Anyone know of a way to make this data track 'invisible' or otherwise hidden from the audio cd player? I think i can set things up so that the data track comes last (but the default is first --- I'm using Nero to put things together...). thanks! -rand0m
From: "david gatewood" <daveg_8@hotmail.com> Subject: mastering beef Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 00:12:01 One quick bitch directed at just a small group. I was listening to a old Dead show yesterday that was listed as SBD RL>DAT. While listening, I realized it was brick wall limited at -4db. I is pretty noticeable on vocals especially when they really get yelling. Now it's great that the show is available, but I think whoever did this (and many others, I'm sure) should refrain from doing so. I have used compressors and all other types of audio gear as a recording engineer, and this sounds to me like those nice tasty reels were fed into a $200 compressor and then into the line input of a D7 with a $4.00 Radio Shack cable. Listen to me! You are not a Mastering Engineer!!!!! Quit doing this!!!! If you want to transfer it properly, rent a nice compressor (if you must) like a Manley or Tube Tech and use a high res A>D like a Weiss or even an AD2K+. If you want it tranferred properly send it to me. I have full access to a fully redone reel with brand new heads and can use top grade cables and a AD2K+ and soon, a Weiss A>D. I can do several spins and do a 44.1 cd, 48k DAT and even spin a 24/96 to a drive. This particular show was 2-24-74 Winterland, and it would smoke if only a little care were used. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

From: Gordon Gidluck <gidluck@swbell.net> Subject: RE:DAT to CD recording Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 20:51:10 -0600 Hi Michael, Your DAT machine will playback the tape at 48kHz. Your CDR recorder needs the sampling rate to be 44.1kHz for audio CD's. Some CDR recorders have a DSP which will sample rate convert the signal for you while recording. I don't know if your machine has that or not. If it does not you would need an box which does sample rate conversion between the two machines. I have no personal recommendations for devices which actually do this. Also, another option is to do the sample rate conversion on a computer in software. This can be a time consuming process for the absolute best filtering, but it does produce excellent results. Some softwares can do this realtime while recording, but you are better off quality wise in doing the offline processing which takes longer. Another option with a computer is to use a soundcard with an onboard DSP. The Zefiro ZA2 was a popular ISA card which does this. There are a few other PCI cards around which do the realtime resampling.
