From: "C. Chambers" <craig.chambers@mindspring.com> Subject: Regarding Nero 5.5 **DO NOT USE** Reply-To: <craig.chambers@mindspring.com> Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 15:30:33 -0500 Reading this thread between Slipkid and randOm reminded me about the BUG in Nero 5.5 that has been so wonderfully documented by Lane Kelly, who sometimes frequents DAT-Heads also. http://members.home.net/lane5/Nero/NeroBug.html In a nutshell, Nero 5.5 drops a single frame for every track it burns on CDR. May not sound like much, but it will cause discontinuities in the transitions between tracks. As one frame is 1/75 of a second of audio, after a few cycles through Nero, you begin losing substantial amounts of information. After reading Lane's discourse on the issue, and discussing it in other forums, it had been discovered as far back as 2 years ago. Apparently, Ahead Software was informed as far back as then and were oblivious to correcting the problem before it became widespread. I have since boycotted Nero and refuse to trade with folks that use it...I actually ask. I am really amazed at how many people still use Nero 5.5... If you are concerned with preserving your music, I would ask too if I were you. Only when enough people become concerned, will Ahead Software likely "fix" the bug. I would let as many people know as possible and send Ahead questions...like "when are YOU going to issue a bug fix for Nero 5.5??" If you have a licensed copy, I would demand my money back if they refuse to fix it (like that will get you anywhere :-) Cheers! I doubt many folks are going to want >to >wait 2-3 minutes to eject while live recording. Hi Adam (and All), This was one of my big concerns when I saw the CDR300 at NAMM last week.Like most CD recorders, you do NOT need to finalize before unloading the disc. It takes a total of about 15 seconds to unload a disc, load the next, have it recognized and begin recording again. This will sure seem like an eternity at shows while waiting for it to re-load between songs. But, hey, a little stress buzz only makes it more fun : ) Yeah, right! Happy Recording, Marc I recall reading a while back that 99 min. discs were available in Asia somewhere and that they would be available everywhere in the future. Anyone know anything about this? That extra 19 minutes could be HUGE in a live recording context. From: "Fitz, Jason" <Fitz@sewkis.com> Subject: Sound of Sony PCM-M1 versus PCM-R500 - please help... Reply-To: jsfitz@acedsl.com Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:51:28 -0500 I just bought a new Sony PCM-R500 and compared it to the sound of my portable Sony PCM-M1 and I feel like the M1 sounds fuller and warmer on playback. Specifically, on the M1 there seems to be more bass, mid, and less brittle highs than on the R500. This is all going D->A, I have not yet compared the A->D. I assume the A->D will be better on the R500 since it has SBM. These comparisons were done with a DAT I recorded with the M1 - all other factors during monitoring were equal when doing the comparison. A few questions: 1. Is it possible/likely the D->A on the M1 is better - would it be the converters, the circuitry? 2. Is it possible/likely the M1 is a newer production model, and the R500 has older components (I bought the M1 this fall 2001 - this R500 was new in fall 2000 [I bought it factory sealed from someone who never used it])? 3. Is it possible/likely that the tape sounds better on the M1 because I recorded it on the M1? Here's my dilemma/big question: If I am using the R500 to mix down 8-track analog recordings to - will I get a sound that is "less full" that on the M1, or would it be "less full" just on playback? Would it be "full sounding" during playback on the M1 if I record it on the R500 using SBM? These are things I will test myself, but I'm trying to get a handle on whether or not this is just a D->A conversion issue and I should keep the R500 for A->D (mix downs), or whether or not this will be difficult to handle in terms of getting the final sound I want from my recordings because I won't hear what I want to on playback from the R500. Should I get a Panasonic SV-3800 for playback - I've heard it's D->A is better? Or just use the M1 (I bought the R500 thinking I wouldn't wear and tear the M1 and just use the M1 for portable playback/recording)? Thank you in advance for your advice/opinions. Take care, -J.S.Fitz New York, NY If you email me directly (much appreciated) please use: jsfitz@acedsl.com - thank you!

From: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Subject: MiniMe and AD2K+ Reply-To: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 11:17:20 -0700 Hi All, The excitement that the Mini Me has created has really been fun to see. I have only seen a few other products create a buzz like this in all my years of taping. I haven't been as psyched for a new toy in quite a while. Far be it from me to want to stop anyone's enthusiasm over a product but I think there are a few noteworthy points to consider and know about. Apogee is NOT billing the Mini Me as having the same specs. as the AD-1000 nor suggesting that it sounds the same. While they say it is "like a Trak2 to go," they are obviously referring to the feature-set, NOT the specs. The specs. show at least 12db lower dynamic range and higher THD+N. The pre-amp and power supply have indeed been re-worked but again Apogee is NOT saying that they are like the Trak2, they are saying the same people designed it. In speaking with Apogee's President, I asked several questions: Of greatest significance... I wanted to know why the Mini Me won't have a digital input. This is a nice addition for those who would like to record at 24-bit and then use the Mini Me for word length reduction to 16-bit. I also wanted to know why they couldn't support 24-bit and 16-bit simultaneously for those who want to record to DAT and try their hand at computer-based recording. Also, like everyone, I wanted to know why they couldn't send audio out the USB and AES/EBU or S/PDIF simultaneously. These questions were clearly answered with "We could have done that too, but it would have added several hundred dollars per feature." The Mini Me was designed with a price point in mind and the feature set was chosen to fit within those parameters and deliver features that the greatest number of users would appreciate. Even their choice to withhold the Firewire option has been based on price. They indicated that they could offer it NOW but that it would be at least a $500.00 add-on. They don't want to offer this feature when it will cost nearly 1/3 the retail price. When the cost of the technology allow for the price to be under $200.00, they will make it available. While on the subject of high-end A/D converters, I had an interesting discussion with Benchmark earlier this week. Please understand that this is feedback from a manufacturer, who like any other is biased in favor of their own product. The AD2K+ price will NOT change. While some folks see it as quite expensive, we only need to remember that the AD-1000 listed at $3295.00 until it was discontinued in 1998. The last few NEW units sold as DEMO units for around $2500.00 Benchmark's sentiment is that the Mini Me does not stack up as a direct competitor to the AD2K+. The specs. are well below the AD2K+ and this will be noticeable even at 16-bit. Then, at 24-bit, it will be very obvious. The feature set is lacking in comparison, especially in regard to the above issues I addressed with Apogee, and as Apogee agreed, those features add considerably to the price. The multiple choices of word length reduction on the AD2K+ do also add to the price. The cost of research and development for those was significant. While not all users like all the settings, all users have a choice to determine what works best for them. I am certain Apogee will not deliver anything shy of a very nice product but I wanted to dispel some developing misunderstandings that I have seen posted in various forums. I, like many of you, will be making many comparison recordings the minute I get my hands on a Mini Me to use. Happy Recording Everybody. Marc Marc Nutter Sonic Sense, Inc. 2755 S. From: "Degrado, Rob" <Rob.Degrado@voicestream.com> Subject: DA-P1 power issues Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:49:43 -0800 hey now, I've had a DA-P1 I bought new in August of '98 that I've used moderately and have never had a single problem with it before. But recently I've notice that when using it in the field with its 6volt Eco-charge battery that if I pause>record for more than a few minutes, the "stop" button will not release record and the power switch will not power down. No, the 'hold' button is never engaged. I eventually have to pull the battery power plug from the deck while powered up just to cancel the pause>record. I'm no electrician but this sounds like bad ju-ju to me. Do I have a power issue with this deck? Its covered under the Repair Master warrenty so should I'm thinking about sending it in for a check up.
