From: "Marc Macauley" <op132@bigfoot.com> Subject: basic DAT-to-computer digital transfer question Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 13:11:22 -0800 I have just installed the Hoontech SB DB III, which adds optical and coaxial in/out capabilities to my SoundBlaster Live card. I recently bought the Sony POC-DA12P cable, and now that I have the appropriate (optical) input jack in my computer, I thought I'd try it out with my Sony PCM-M1, intending to transfer about an hour of music from the DAT to my computer. Somehow, I was under the impression that I could digitally 'transfer' the data from the DAT to my computer, much like I would rip an audio track from a CD or copy files from a Zip drive. (I may be completely mistaken about this.) The only way I can figure out how to do the transfer is to play back the DAT (which I then hear in my speakers) and record it in real-time (from the "SPDIF-In" recording source) using a program such as Creative Recorder. Is there any easier or quicker way to transfer music from my PCM-M1 to my computer? If not, is it possible to at least automatically pick up the Start-ID's and create a new file for each track (program) on the DAT tape? Also, is there any way to automatically adjust the recording level on the computer so that the levels of the resulting wav file on the computer match those on the DAT? Thanks, Marc Macauley

From: "Bob Griesel" <sundance@olywa.net> Subject: RE: Nero Bug: But Is It Real? (Not Really) Reply-To: <sundance@olywa.net> Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 13:36:20 -0800 Interesting discussion. The primary burning package in my little studio is Steinberg WaveLab. WaveLab also has a self-verifying CD ripping function similar to EAC. Copying CDs with WaveLab goes: Rip > Create a new CD from the resulting tracks > Burn CD. WaveLab has few burning options. It burns only Redbook standard audio CDs that are suitable to send to a commercial duplicating facility. If there is anything wrong with the tracks, it will refuse to burn until the problem has been fixed. The most common problem is an error message about the track marker not being quantitized to the edge of a 588 sample frame. This may happen on one or two tracks or on all tracks. It is easy to fix, but each track must be opened in edit so that WaveLab can make the repair. Once this is done, the CD burns fine and is flaw-free so far as I can tell. I've never asked about the source of these problem CDs. I just assume that all software is not equal. I wish now that I had asked. If these CDs have been coming from Nero users, then the bug may be real. On the other hand, if I've been getting Nero-sourced CDs that *do not* need fixing, then there is probably not a bug in Nero. Any thoughts on this? Do any Nero users out there remember sending me any CDs? From: "Matt" <matt@mattb.net> Subject: RE: Nero Bug: But Is It Real? (Not Really) Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 14:57:08 -0700 The issue is really one of hardware. Every (AFIK) CD reader and writer has an offset. That's the number of samples off it is from the position it reports back. This will create a shift like was described. Here's a link on how to correct for it in EAC http://pages.cthome.net/homepage/eac/setup1.htm and a little more background information on offsets. Last I knew no other reading or writing software pays any attention to offsets, creating the shift. So every commercial reading or writing package apparently has this "bug". Matt
From: William Draper <wdraper@expressionanalysis.com> Subject: taped a few shows recently (vaco, emma gibbs) Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 17:56:33 -0500 so i've been a busy little taper over the past few days. went to the cat's cradle in chapel hill thursday for the virginia coalition show (with revelation darling opening), and the pour house in raleigh for the emma gibbs band on friday. good times at the vaco show, and the tape came out ok (some clipping due to the excessive loudness of the venue and my inexperience). emma gibbs was good, as always. unfortunately, some drunk girl thought it would be fun to do her strip tease routine on my mic stand. not good times...bad times. so, i guess there will be some serious noise on the tape. anyway, if anyone is interested in these shows, my ftp info is on jesse goodier's dds ftp site (siteops contact me if you want an upload). check out my page if you are interested in what being taped in the raleigh, nc area (as i seem to be the only one taping around here). www.310furches.com\billpage\ wed

From: "JoeRay Skrha" <joeray@ptialaska.net> Subject: How do I get rid of the second gap between cuts on CD-R... Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 22:51:33 -0900 Hello Fellow Tapers, I need help... Last month I had to reformat my hard drive due to my daughter getting to many virus's from a CYPER PETS chat room. After reinstalling everything the way I THOUGHT I had it before the re-formatting, I now find everytime I go to play a CD-R in either my CD Writer or my DVD player, my window's media player pops and plays my CD-R one track at a time with a second gap between songs. Before this newer happened. I know these CD-R's are without gaps and why it is playing with gaps now I do not know. I have EAC to burn CD-R's and Sound Forge to edit my DATS and CD-R's. I am fearful I should have installed other software to play my CD-R's instead of the stuff that came with my Dell but again, I am not sure. Anyone who can walk me through this problem can choose a few DATS or CD-R's off my tape list I have built over the past 34 years of taping live... Peace, Joe Ray at: joeray@ptialaska.net

From: "J. Williams" <williams@u.washington.edu> Subject: DAT / CDR Questions Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 01:31:06 -0800 (PST) Hi, I'm fairly new to DAT and have a few questions: I bought a Sony PCM-M1 last year and not sure about a few things: when, if ever, should I use the limiter? Should the attenuator be always used? (A few recordings left it at 0dB but seemed there was some distortion even though it didn't go over Zero on record levels). Isn't it more accurate to call it an amplifier and the -20 setting is the standard? I'd like to get a Component DAT deck and also a CD Recording. I'm looking at the Sony DTC-ZE700 right now mostly for cost concerns and the fact my requirements are modest. The recordings from my M1 I'd transfer to CDRs using the ZE700. I could do this with the M1 but isn't the cable expensive (and best put into another deck) and I thought it would reduce head wear on the M1. Is the ZE700 the same as the PCM-R300 except SCMS? Does it show error count and head usage? (How is this important and how to use this information) Does it record analog at 44.1k? What outputs does it have? I don't plan on trading any DATs (maybe CDRs, if anything). So, will SCMS limit me if I get a CD Burner? Should I get a Pro CD Recorder? Originally was thinking about the Sony CDR-W33 but then saw the Marantz Dual CDR500. The dual trays would be handy at times. Any opinions on the Marantz or other decks? Will the Marantz or any deck record/copy CD enhanced/extra? (I can do this with my computer but curious) Can I record from a microphone into RCA inputs? I saw that the Marantz has XLR inputs as well as RCA. What's the difference? Is this the same as balanced/unbalanced? This isn't clear to me. Is balanced much better? What kind of cables to use? Coax? Optical? Find any major difference between them? How about brands? Being able to record from a microphone using either DAT or CD in the future would be nice. I figure the money saved not getting a more expensive DAT deck will go into a better CD recorder. (Also, I'm using a laptop so the sound card isn't the best) General Dat questions: What about recording over old DAT tapes? LP mode? This best for recoding FM broadcasts? Also, I have been recording everything at 44.1k; any reason to use 48K if mostly transferring to CDRs? Finally, any websites/links to check out? Any sources of DAT/CDR Deck reliability? Well think that's about it. Any comments/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, John
