With all the technical expertise out there on DAT-Heads,
I was hoping someone could help me....
I've made 150+ CD covers using MS Publisher. Does
anyone know how (or if) I can convert these files to
JPEGs or into MS Word?
I'll gladly reward the helper from my CDR (or DAT) collection.
Thanks,

Subject: Audio firmware chip for DDS drive
Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 08:06:25 -0600 (CST)
So, a long long time ago I bought a Conner/Seagate 4320RT DDS drive to
read audio DATs into my computer. I was pretty naive about it at the time
and of course it didn't have audio firmware because it wasn't an
SGI-branded drive. I thought I could flash upgrade it but actually this
model has to have the EPROM replaced with one burned with the correct
firmware.
Fast forward to last week: I found someone who had burned the firmware
successfully for his drive, and who had one blank chip left that he could
burn for me. However, turns out that at some point in the intervening
years the mechanism of my drive went belly up so although it's recognized
as having the correct firmware when I put in the new chip, and DAT2WAV
sees that it accepts audio commands, the drive itself doesn't work (even
with the old, non-audio firmware) and it ate my test tape.
So if YOU have one of these drives-- for more info on models and how to
replace the firmware chip see
http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/datfaq.htm
and would like to make it audio-capable, I'll sell the firmware for what I
paid-- $20. If you want to pay a couple bucks extra for shipping, I'll
include the dead drive which you can repair or use for spare parts or
whatever. This could be a pretty cheap way to get into DDS audio!

Marc,
All transfers from your DAT machine will be realtime only.
On the picking up of start-id's, both the soundcard drivers and the
software has to support that feature. SEKD was marketing some cards
(made by Marian) which did this, and Samplitude has a checkbox in their
software for this. I am not aware of other software which does this, but
perhaps there are some. Anyone else know of any?
About the levels adjustment. If you have a volume adjustment on an
S/PDIF signal, that indicates that a DSP is in use. This is evidently
the case of the SoundBlaster Live. S/PDIF between two devices should be
bit perfect if there is no DSP involved.

Whats wrong with SHNs? I never realized that this non lossy format makes
recordings have analog gens. I do have one hell of a nice playback set up
and I never heard generation loss in SHNs. Am I missing something? Please
explain.

for sale:
package 1:
1 matched pair of Earthworks SR77 cardioid microphones, 1 year old as of last
week (earthworks replaced my older pair no questions asked) in the tubes they
came in. excellent condition, i treat these very well
1 pair audio technica at8410a shockmounts
1 pair DPA UA0237 (big ass) windscreens. these things will work in any
weather/wind
2 pairs Earthworks windscreens
2 pairs earthworks clips
1 Shure A27 vertical mount
1 pair 25 foot XLRs
package 2:
1 unmatched pair DPA 4061 microphones
DPA MPS 6010 power supply
various windscreens/clips for these mics
i will not sell these to you if you plan on running them straight into your
deck. you need a pre or a/d with separate gain control for channels. DPA
fucked me over when i needed to have a connector replaced and sent me a mic that
is more sensitive than the other 4061 i had. So these mics work fine, you just
need to control gain on each channel to match levels. so if you run an mp2,
sonosax, sbm, (v2 but who stealths with a v2?) you're golden with these things
if anyone's interested, i also have a pair of 15 foot audiomagic excalibur II
xlrs i may part with if the price is right
make me an offer

Jefferson Airplane during the Spirit of 67 tour in Delray Beach Fl last
year? Really looking for this if anyone can help.

Hi Chris (And All),
While we are progressively getting further away from "DAT" material with
such questions, I guess we are close enough to the topic since we are still
talking digital recording. : )
The most common mistake I hear about with the VX Pocket is that users forget
to set the Mixer (usually located in the tray on the bottom of the screen)
to "digital" for clock select and "digital Input" for record source. Then,
when playing back, set it to "automatic." While it seems intuitive that
"automatic" would work all the time, the above is generally better.
I hope this helps.

I suspect he means .mp3 rather than .shn (unless some people have been
taking .mp3 stuff, decoding it to .wav, and encoding it to .shn).

This is true. They are OK for light breezes (up to 8 or 9 mph), but
with cardioid and hypercardioid capsules(1), they don't quite cut it.
I've found a reasonably effective and inexpensive fix. Radio shack
sells a windscreen designed for the "ball" type mics (Shure dynamic
vocal types) and these will fit over the DPA screens giving you two
levels of wind noise attenuation.
1. I use these with Oktavas

Hey,
Since I sold my deck a few months ago and don't
plan on buying a new one anytime soon I realized that
I should finally get rid of all of my DATs. I should
allow someone to listen to then instead of having them
just collect dust in my closet. My collection is
mostly Phish and Pearl Jam but it includes other stuff
as well. You can see some of it on my attached link
at the bottom except there is a lot more phish that I
haven't updated. I can send anyone the complete list
once I actually go through all of my stuff and see
what i have. I am looking to get $1.75 for each DAT,
not trying to make a profit off of this just trying to
sell it for less then the price of a new blank. I
would also like to sell all of them to one person. If
you are interested please e-mail me at
jjmcelro@artsci.wustl.edu
Take Care,
Jude
