AFAIK, this board (at least from what I've read) uses the CMI 8738
chipset and both the CMI OEM drivers from their web page and/or
zoltrix nightingale drivers work fine. The digital IO is bit-perfect
if you have all analog channels muted (otherwise, the analog "noise"
from these channels gets mixed in to the ADC).

Thanks Wayne....
can you clairfy what "muted" means? does it mean, nothing playing (eg. a CD or
system sounds) or do you mean something more like disabling the driver all
together durring digital I/O? perhaps I'm wrong but I'd speculate that any
analog noise will be there whether playing sounds or not as long as the driver
is running.

The purpose and function of SHN encoding is to make a smaller file
which can be restored PERFECTLY into it's original form. Analog
generations are not introduced by this process.

The volume registers for the analog channels (CD, mic-in, line-in) take
values from 0-100. If any of them has a value other than zero, then
the ADC will be active. Noise from the ADC will end up on your dub.
By setting each analog channel's slider to zero, or by clicking the
"mute" (mute just sets it to zero, but remembers where it was set
previously) box, the ADC will be disabled completely. You can use
the master slider to monitor your dub since it is a post-amp control,
and you can leave the PCM (or Wave as some mixer apps call it) channel
active as it doesn't involve the ADC. I don't know off hand if the
PCM channel is mixed at the digital level, or fed into the post-amp,
so if you're OS likes to play little warnings, etc. you may want to
disable PCM by muting it as well.
For what it's worth, the ADC and DAC circuits of the CMI 8738
are pretty crappy, but who cares; they have one of the cheapest
pure-digital S/PDIF interfaces around.

Tom McCreadie wrote:
"But we're not preserving the music...we're merely preserving our

Actually, we ARE preserving the music, as well as our plucky efforts.
I agree that some tapes have drastic and non-musical level
adjustments, and that should be taken as a sign that the recordist
is, as you said, "the original sloppy taper." As the sloppy taper
learns from his (her) mistakes, such drastic level adjustments should
become less common, and hopefully, can be done away with.
In the meantime, I think Preservation AND Capture are extremely
important, and I would not like to give short shrift to either.
Position, location, and type of gear make enormous differences in the
sound of field recordings, not to mention the quality of the house
sound. Preservation is also clearly important. I don't know anyone
on this list who would prefer to add noise or error to their
recordings intentionally.
There must be some sort of balance struck then, so that enough effort
is placed on the "Capture" side that it will be worth Preserving.
Then, properly Captured events should be preserved in a stable
manner. If there are drastic level adjustments which interfere with
the musicality of the playback, I suppose they should be adjusted,
although I would personally prefer that this function could be
accomplished upon playback without damaging the original bits. I
doubt such software is widespread at the consumer level at this time,
but ProTools, for instance, allows you to specify a volume curve for
each audio file. This leaves the bits as they are, and allows the
engineer to compensate for unruly level adjustments, or any other
volume changes.
Master Tapes are Master Recordings, and should not be trifled with,
in the event that future software could make them more listenable.
If you want to tweak out a copy so it's smoother to listen to, knock
yerself out, but SAVE THAT MASTER.
that's my 1/12.5 of a quarter.

This Sony PCM-R500 DAT is a new machine I bought from a broadcast company in
California who sold it to me factory sealed for $700 + shipping. I am just
looking to get what I paid for it. The box has been opened, but the unit is
new with all accessories, manual, packing materials, etc. Save $300-$400
dollars (more if you include tax) off the street price of a retail unit! I
decided I don't need this machine because I have a PCM-M1 for light DAT work
and am purchasing a DAW to do most of my mixdowns.
If you would like to purchase the machine, or if you have any questions,
please email jfitz@acedsl.com.
Take care,

Subject: Can Anyone Recommend Carrying Case??
Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 15:40:02 -0500
Greetings. I'm willing to spend a fair amount on a decent carrying case for
my gear ever since some beer that spilled onto my DA-P1 has resulted in
necessary repair work. I actually had it wrapped in a plastic but at some
point during the show it got kicked off...grrr. Anyway, a few questions:
I'd like to keep my DA-P1, V2 and AD2K in the same case/bag. Does the
AR-DAP1 Porta-Brace have enough room for all of these? Can anyone recommend
another Porta-Brace that might accommodate all three pieces?
The SoniCase looks ideal, but I've heard about the bottom of the bag not
being secure enough and sometimes results in gear falling out (??).
Any recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks.

Just looking for taping information about the Fox in Boulder. I figure
some of you people have taped there before (actually, I've listened to Marc
Nutter's recordings from there before - but his was from on stage). I'm
hoping to go to the Stanton Moore (with Skerik & Chris Wood: Woo-hoo!) show
there in March and I haven't been to the Fox before.
It's GA, so I'll try to be early. Do they allow stands? Is there a taper
section? Any hints, tips, or information would be appreciated. Maybe see
some of you people there!

Subject says it all. I'm the original owner bought in 1998. I never trade DATS
anymore nor do I really trade anymore so I have no use for it. Its in
cosmetically great condition and has been sent in for repair once for a
tension problem. It has a transferable IDS extended warranty which expires in
2003. The going price for this deck at Terrapin tapes is $683 so I'm offering
it up for $500 OBO with the transferable extended warranty. Thanks!!

Subject: Tascam DA-30 ?
Date: Tue, 05 Feb 2002 21:27:19 -0500
Howdy folks,
Bear with me here(or not) and ill explain a cornfusing situation. Tonight i
went to try out a used DA-30 to see if i wanted to buy it. I took my SV-255
and ran it's dig coax cable into the da-30 using a blank(90 M, if that
matters) and a show in the other deck.
First off i did not start at the beginning of the tape so it could be
possible that i messed up in accounting for the lead-in. I set up the deck
and started to record. the levels seemed fine and it sounded fine through
the headphones i was using(wasnt hooked up to anything). I just recorded a
little bit to make sure that it worked properly. Then i rewound the tape
and hit play on the Tascam. It counted right through were I had recorded
and didnt show any levels at all. I tried it again and the same thing
happened. Then i put the copy into the 1st deck(sv-255) and it played. I
then put the master into the Tascam and it played(meaning it was capable of
playback).
Since i know little about datdecks in comparison to many of you i figured
maybe you could offer a diagnosis or opinion. Any help would be greatly
appreciated(including feedback on the DA-30). Please reply offlist.
Thanks,
Mark
