Heya,
In digest #206 Jude <jude_james@yahoo.com> indicated that
he was letting go of his dat collection. He preferred to sell it to
one individual, if possible. I contacted him because I was interested
in one particular show but haven't heard from him. I was wondering if
anyone had taken up his offer. I am very interested in getting a copy of
the 83 Talking Heads show at the SPAC, NY. Please contact me off-list.
Thanks!

Hello - Just wondering if somebody out there could help me choose (or just tell me what one to buy!) a soundcard that would allow me to transfer dat's to the computer. I am looking for the easiest and preferably, relatively least expensive method. My computer uses windows xp....all I want to do is put these things on cd! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for some help from people with knowledge/experience of the bass
roll-off
concept used with the AT853 cardioid/hypercardioid mics. Here are some
experiences i've
had:
1. taped cast iron filter at the pour house in raleigh, nc. the pour house
is about
50 ft wide where i was taping from, and i was 30 ft from the stage using an
xy-90 mic
configuration (cardioid) with the mics 10ft. high. i had the bass roll-off
set at 107 hz,
and the tape came out nicely balanced.
2. taped virginia coalition at the cat's cradle in chapel hill, nc. the
cat's cradle is
about 75 ft. wide where i was taping from, and i was 45 ft. from the stage
using an xy-90
mic configuration (cardioid) with the mics 9 ft high. i had the bass
roll-off set at 107
Hz, and the tape came out a little "tinny" (not much bass).
3. taped the emma gibbs band at the pour house in raleigh, nc. the pour
house is about
50 ft wide where i was taping from, and i was 30 ft from the stage using an
xy-90 mic
configuration (cardioid) with the mics 10ft. high. i had the bass roll-off
set at 107 hz,
and the tape came out nicely balanced.
now, should the bass roll-off be set based on distance from the stage,
width of the venue,
type of mic configuration, type of mic element used, or some combination of
all of them
(as i suspect). please, anyone with any kind of information, please help me
out!

Subject: Coax to M1
Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 12:04:12 -0700
I have a Sony M1, and I also have a 7-pin to optical i/o cable. I don't
have a 7-pin to coax, and I see they are hard to get if you want the real
Sony one. I see Oade have a passive one, as does Core sound. Would I be
better off getting a CO2 and translating from optical, or would a dedicated
cable, like the one from Core be better? The Core cable is the cheapest
solution, but I'm willing to pay a little more for a better one. This will
mostly be for getting patches from better rigs at shows. I'm just thinking
the CO2 adds a little more overhead because there's another battery adaptor
and battery to mess with.
What do you guys think? Could the Sony voltage cause patching problems
in a chain with the passive cables that will be more of a pain than having
another powered box?
Thanks!
Matt
PS thanks for all the information on the Fox - Very helpful!

Subject: need PCI sound card with digital I/O to replace my ISA Fiji
Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2002 17:51:34 -0500
I sure do hate to give up my Fiji but the new motherboards don't have ISA
slots these days.
TBeach does make the Santa Cruz which appears to be a very nice card but no
digital I/O.
I'm under the impression that all things SoundBlaster are mediocre so I'll
probably pass on that (correct me if I'm wrong - not intended as flame bait).
I was looking at the Soyo Dragon+ motherboard with built in digital I/O. Other
than the supposedly mediocre analog section, it seems to be fine.
Does anyone have experience with the Hercules Gaming Theater XP? how is it?
anyway, any recommendations for a PCI based sound card with digital I/O are
greatly appreciated.
thanks
p.s.
please copy my email address on the reply.

The bass you get is not dependent on much other than the amount of
bass present at your taping location. Even in the same house with the
same PA, it will vary from night to night if the PA has different bands
with different operators.
Soooo, if ya really wanna know what you've got, you hafta go by the
seat of your pants (your pants get smarter with experience :) or buy
yourself a hand-held portable Real Time Analyzer. Even with the
analyzer, you will not know what you have until the band starts
playing; however with the analyzer and a little experience you will
recognize when the bottom end is 10db more or less than normal
(whatever normal is :) and be able to set your rolloff accordingly.
Taping is just a little like fishing :)
