From: "Winnie Olmer" <who@sover.net> Subject: is digital---digital? Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 09:37:13 -0500 I've posted this before but didn't get a definitive answer. Let me try to reword my question. Dats are high maintenance. I want a small hard drive unit for field recording. The Archos Jukebox is a nice concept, but is "lossey" as it records MP3 only. Creative is about to release the Nomad 3 which records WAV via a 1/8" analog/digital in (sounds just like a Minidisc). Looks like it might be what I'm looking for. A digital signal... what is it and how does it become an MP3 in the jukebox or a Minidisc recorder? And a WAV in the upcoming Nomad? Is it irrelevant what the piece of equipment is that accepts a digital signal? Minidisc, Archos, Dat, computers.... do they all accept the same type digital signal from my Zefiro Inbox? I know I've used my Zefiro on a Minidisc and a DAT. Is it simply the bios in each device that converts the digital signal to either an MP3, WAV or whatever? I'm just trying to figure out if reading that the Nomad 3 has a 1/8" analog/digital SPDIF in and records in WAV format would it be a substitute for my Sony D8. I move everything to CD so all I need is 44.1-16 bit. Does it sound like the Nomad will be a potential live recording unit? Thanks! Bought originally in May 1995. Works flawlessly, in good condition. Paid $550 then, asking $400 or best offer. Serious inquiries only. Ship via UPS insured. Brian Dowling euphoria1@mindspring.com >> Good opportunity for someone to get into surround-stereo stealth recording at a bargain price; also note it's rare to see a DSM-6S/L mic for sale. This same mic set may also be LiteGUY baffle mounted to 12 foot heights when not in stealth mode; 18 feet heights possible with available mic cable extension. Brian's purchase date was (actually) May, 1996, serial # 2204; In-Warranty plug repair in NOV, 1997. NOTE: DSM mic sets may also be refurbished to look and operate as-new for $100 service cost. Mic Model is equivalent to DSM-6S/L (Currently $450). PA-6LC3 (currently $200) reduces bass at 45, 85, 170 cycles (slide-switch selected). This mic system works for recording up to and including very loud Rock venues directly into the MIC input (only, with no liability for deck input overloading) of any portable deck with 3.5mm stereo jack. Basically correct, although it's not the BIOS per se but the entire operating system/software combination in the device that determines what kind of file the digital data stream becomes. > I'm just trying to figure out if reading that the Nomad 3 has a 1/8" > analog/digital SPDIF in and records in WAV format would it be a substitute > for my Sony D8. I move everything to CD so all I need is 44.1-16 bit. Does > it sound like the Nomad will be a potential live recording unit? Yes, definitely. The original Nomad Jukebox was also a potential live recording device, but the new one looks significantly better since it accepts a digital input whereas the original was analog line-in only with less than stellar A/D conversion. It also had short battery live, no level meters, and a propensity to lose files at the drop of a hat. It remains to be seen how many of its problems have been overcome in the new device. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com

From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: re: Ego-Sys U2A Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 10:34:48 -0800 I bought one of these last summer. I'm using it on a computer that I use for a Audio Workstation. When I got it, I looked at the list of Operating Systems it could be used with. XP was not on the list. I have another computer with W2K. I'm not using the Ego Sys on that, because the rest of my Audio software and hardware is on the computer with Win98, and the damn W2K computer I got is a damn Dell that came with W2K, and my copy of W2K can't be installed on any computer but a Dell. Pissed me off how they rigged that. Anyway, I guess to expect any hardware made by small companies to work with any OS other than the one's it was compatible with when purchased is not reasonable, IMO. Most of these companies are pretty small, and upgrading drivers, I'm sure comes behind getting new products to market in their priorities. Keith

From: O Nelson <onelson@enteract.com> Subject: OT: Any Streambox VCR experts? Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 22:13:00 -0600 I've been experimenting with using this program to downlaod RealAudio files (rather than streaming them, so indepent of traffic and server speeds) of archived radio shows. The quality is OK--nothing special, and certainly not good enough for concerts. Fine for listening to radio. Some excellent interviews with musicians, for example. Anyway, does anyone here know how I might be able to use it at, for example, the Morning Becomes Eclectic site? Normally, at least on less technical sites, you just copy the link and paste it into Streambox. The program then follows the link to find the real target file. But at MBE, and some other sites, this doesn't work. The link to the RealAudio file looks like this: http://kcrw.com/cgi-bin/ram_wrap.cgi?/mb/mb020117Psyco_On_Da_Bus and Streambox can't get to the real file. It downloads a little nothing of about 1 kb, declares it a success, and stops. So, any idea how to get past this hurdle? Thanks, Olaf BWT: 2 people for DAT or SHN B&P's from my list. Winners will be notified, others won't be.
