Chris ------------------------------ From: Bobby Gervais Subject: matrix tapes Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 23:33:30 -0500 I am hoping for some advice from some of you that have done matrix tapes before (Gary davis- are you still out there????!!! ) I have the chance to tape Ian Moore, a great Texas guitarist and songwriter, from the board in a small club here in Houston. Usually I just use my trusty core sound mics and get a good audience tape, but this time I can tap into the board. I am supposed to tape it for the fan club to put on the website and I don't want to muck it up. help!!!!!!!!!!! I want to make a matrix of the soundboard and a live mic. Also I am considering a direct soundboard feed of the guitar channel, so I can make sure it is prominent in the mix. [I find most board tapes pretty sterile and lacking in guitar. I think you get lots of vocals and kick drum, but the guitar in the mix seems to be rather low, I presume because of the natural amplification from the stage being rather loud] Anyway, that would be four channels. I have a Behringer 16 channel mixer I bought today to do this ( i know I only needed four channels, but hey, it was on sale and had sliders whereas the 8 channel did not.....!!!). I also bought an Oktava condenser mic (the 312 or something like that). I plan to run the soundboard feed, live mic and perhaps the guitar direct feed to the mixer, then mix down, then send to my Apogee Rosetta and on to my Fostex D-5. I would welcome any and all hints, advice and recommendations on how to get a good tape this way. Especially since I am not familiar with mixers, especially this one, are there any common pitfalls to avoid? Are there any rules on mic placement? Should I listen through headphones onthe mixer or on the DAT deck to monitor the recording? Is it better to use the XLRs out from the board or 1/4 plugs? Would a BBE Sonic Maximizer help the recording, or are those a waste of $$$$$$?? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me privately, or perhaps we can all learn something from those who have done it before??? cheers to ya! Bobby Gervais ------------------------------ From: Tim Newman Subject: ISO SKB 2-5-2002 Conduit Trenton, NJ Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 23:05:20 -0800 (PST) Howdy all, looking for a copy of SKB 2-5-2002 @ Conduit in Trenton, NJ. I blew my copy. Long story short, there was a slide projector directly behind my mics and I picked up the fan noise in my left channel. Damn! Not really noticeable during the louder passages, but during the quieter parts it's really annoying. Dumped the DAT>HDD and cut-n-pasted the right channel, but it sounds really, well, mono. If anyone can help me out that'd really cool. Have list. Contact me via e-mail if you are willing to help. Thanks! -tim __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Are there going to be a bunch of nice digital preamps flooding >the used market because everyone will be getting MiniMe's? "Analog preamp" and "digital preamp" are misnomers IMO. Preamps are analog. If they also have a built-in A/D then they have a digital output. There aren't a lot of portable preamp / A/D combos on the market. The Graham-Patten DMIC-20 is one near (but still above) your stated price range. You may be able to find a deal on a used one. There is nothing wrong with the A/D in the M1. I would go for a quality new or used preamp first and then you can decide if you want to add an A/D later when you have more money. Within 10 minutes, had the ZA-2 working great... Then, because I'm a glutton for punishment and since it was a new install, there's nothing to lose to try some of the new OS's. So, I installed Win XP Pro and zip. Won't recognize that the card is even there... Driver's don't work and even manually trying to edit the system files doesn't work... So, I scratch the XP and install 2000 Pro next... Although I haven't done a thorough job at hacking away to try all the workarounds I can think of, it's not looking very promising... I could probably live with just keeping it running NT 4.0 but waiting for it to boot is like being on a 1 lane highway behind a 130 year old woman with her left directional on for miles... I know someone asked about XP & the ZA-2 and I e-mailed him personally but he didn't get any responses (BTW, if you're reading this, I obviously didn't get it to work yet either...) I thought I would try again and this time, extend the question to Win 2000 Pro... If it's a suggestion, please e-mail me privately. If it's a definite fix or guaranteed workable solution, please post it here for anyone else who might need to know... Thanks in advance... Denecke AD-20 stereo mic preamp a/d converter. 2. Denecke PS-2 two channel mic power supply. Both were bought from Masterpiece AV. The AD-20 was bought as an "open box" unit but is in impeccable condition, used < 10 times by me. The PS-2 was purchased new, also used < 10 times. I would like to see both items go to one person but will split up if necessary. If someone takes both, I'll throw in 2 recharable 9v batteries and a charger that I used to power these items. Make me an offer. -Derek ------------------------------ From: Mark Mayhle Subject: Re: Zefiro ZA-2 & Win XP or 2000 Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 15:13:30 -0600 (CST) On Tue, 12 Feb 2002, Michael B. I'm the one who asked about XP. There is information on www.zefiro.com on how to set up the card in Win2000. It works fine for me in Win2KPro. The same method may work in WinXP but I don't know of anyone who's tried it and so far I haven't installed XP on the machine with the ZA2. -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com ------------------------------ From: "Zach" Subject: Mic Threads Reply-To: Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 14:17:07 -0700 Anyone know where to get a tap & die set for the popular 5/8 27 mic threads? doing a search on the archives produces hundreds of responses....too bad tap is so similar to 'taping' ;-) Peace, Zach ------------------------------ From: 31st330i@roadfly.com Subject: what's the story about some sound cards resampling digital I/O? Here's the situation: I am mainly recording to my PCM-M1, and, at some point, I would like to have a portable rig to record to the M1 as well as directly to my computer based DAW (MOTU 896 or 1296 with Digital Performer). 1. Is the SBM-1 a noticeable improvement for the PCM-M1 (I am very happy with the sound of the PCM-M1 so far)? 2. Can you record into Digital Performer with Mini-Me using the USB I/O? Can you do this with the AD2K+? (I have an AES/EBU digital I/O interface)? 3. How does each unit sound (I know Mini-Me hasn't shipped, yet) - how does the AD2K+ sounds? How do you think the Mini-Me unit will sound? If I mostly want to do simple recordings on the PCM-M1, should I just stick with what I have and not worry about these external A/D units? Michael Gerzon gives a rigorous analysis of the improvements that such shuffling brings to this same array when fitted with shotgun capsules - increased directivity, wider stage width, improved rear- and side audience suppression etc. "Applications of Blumlein Shuffling to Stereo Microphone Techniques", M.A. Gerzon, J. Audio Eng. Soc, vol 42(8), 1994, pp. 435-453. Those directivity gains should also be achievable in the cardioid and hypercardioid series of the AT853. Nowadays it's easy to do shuffling trials in wave editor software, but matrixing circuits, active or passive, are also cheap and simple to cobble up. Anyway its worth a try. I have never tried the technique myself (also don't have AT853's), as I have never had the occasion to need to "zoom", but I regularly tinker with shuffling on other types of recordings. Tom Incidentally, I highly recommend the above Gerzon article. IMHO it brims with substance...definitely one for my 'Desert Island list'. ------------------------------ From: "Ryan Haskell" Subject: Can you name these Leo Kottke tunes?
