That really depends on the venue and the way the sound guy's got the
instruments mixed. In a small club, you might get no drums and no guitar,
and a ton of vocals. Somewhere else, you might get a nice, balanced mix
(this is rare in smaller venues.)
> Especially since I am not familiar with mixers, especially this one, are
> there any common pitfalls to avoid?
Make sure you pan left and right, if you're getting a stereo board
feed. If you're in a little club, you'll almost end up mixing
"against" the room, using the mic to get the sound of the
instruments that aren't mic'ed to the board or aren't very present
in the board feed. Spend the next few days learning how to use your
mixer. You don't want to do this at the venue. You *will* produce a bad
tape if you haven't learned your gear at least a little. Make sure you
have tons of cables; some boards have RCA outs, some have XLR, and others
have 1/4" mono *OR* stereo outs.
>
> Are there any rules on mic placement?
Try and get them as close to onstage as possible. Try and get them
*onstage*. If you get there early and ask nicely (or have asked nicely
beforehand), the sound guy might let you use their snake to get back
to the board area, and you can go from there to your mixer. If you can't
get the mics onstage, you're going to lose a lot of the unmic'ed/low-mixed
sound if your mics are at the back of the room.
> Should I listen through headphones onthe mixer or on the DAT deck to
> monitor the recording?
Doesn't matter. Just make sure you're not distorting when you come out
of your board; this is more accurately done on the DAT, I guess.
> Is it better to use the XLRs out from the board or 1/4 plugs?
Does it have both? If so, use the XLRs.
> Would a BBE Sonic Maximizer help the recording, or are those a waste of
> $$$$$$??
Do post-processing after you tape, if you need/want to. It's easier to
enhance a good no-nonsense master DAT than it is to fix a badly-processed
one.

In SF and Oakland, try Leo's Pro Audio.
In the north bay (San Rafael) try Bananas at Large.
I've not used the two above, but I have friends who have,
and they were satisfied with the results... maybe someone
else on DAT-heads can describe their personal experience
with either/both of the above.
In the south bay, I use SONY's western region headquarters

Just so you know it's you and not your sound card, I run an audiophile
2496 and XP and they are just great together. XP knows what it is...
and the drivers from M-Audios site work. There was no fuss w/it. You
should uninstall the drivers. Perhaps even yank the card and search the
registry for "audiophile" and "m-audio" and remove all mention of it.
Then re-install. Keeps futzin', it will work.
Having been using Winblows for a long time, I can say w/confidence that
XP is by far the best thing to come down the pipe from MS in a long
time.
It's "hardware friendly" attitude continues to amaze me. Especially on
my laptop (used for recording). I can yank cards in and out repeatedly
and XP doesn't even blink!
The software compatibility modes, allowing you to run a chosen program
in "win95 mode" and all the other win flavors, is jut too cool.

Subject: [DAT_into_CDR] DAT transfers using a Sony DDS unit

Hello, I started transfering DATs using my friend's machine and a
digital I/O card, but (of course) I broke the machine. I then
realized I had a DDS drive at my work, so I brought it home today.
Does anyone know how to transfer audio from DATs? It's a Sony SDT-
S9000 SCSI connected to an Advansys SCSI Host Adapter on a Pentium 4
with Windows 2000 and XP. I've been searching, but DAT2WAV and VDAT
both do not work (maybe it's the OS; they both give me ASPI errors).
Any ideas? Anyone?
Thanks a lot!

It is unlikely (but possible) that the SDT9000 drive you have is
audio-capable. AFAIK, only those made for use by SGI have audio firmware
and I've never seen a source for the SGI firmware to update the
drive. Sony refuses to make it available.
That said, if you should be so lucky as to have an audio-capable drive,
you need an ASPI layer installed to used DAT2WAV or VDAT. The Adaptec
ASPI layer most likely won't install with your Advansys controller, but
there are other ASPI layers out there that might work. I got a warning
that ASPI should not be installed on WinXP but I did it anyway and it
works fine with audio-enabled DDS drives.
If you do have an ASPI layer installed, pick up SCSIPING from the DAT2WAV
website to get the correct ID #'s for the DDS drive to use with DAT2WAV.

Great! So you can't use it in the field. Portable power is coming soon??
when?? You can buy a Vector Power Generator now for under $50 which will
provide AC for the thing for 3-4 hours (less using phanton power).
Check out the edirol ua-5. IMHO, it beats the Duo for the price
(also less than $300) its dc powerable, usb powerable, and with
modification can output a digital (coax) and a usb audio signal
with the 24 bit rate. If your taping with a dat, then you might
be better off buying a 16-bit/44.1/44.8 ADC, because the extra bits from the
24-bit machines will be truncated. If your taping with a laptop, then
you stand to benefit from 24-bit ADC. Check out www.nickpicks.com
for an impartial review of the UA-5 (he's not trying to get you to
buy it from him!!).
I use a mindprint di-port. Its a two-channel 24-bit preamp/ADC.
I think it sounds great. It also has an analog line in, monitor out through
RCA and headphone jack, Digital in, No USB out though. But usb sucks anyways.
I feed it into a digigram sound card in a laptop and have been very impressed
with the results. Its also AC, and I use the vector inverter with it. Ive
never had it run out of power on me (knock on wood) and you can also use it to
recharge other gear with it. I picked mine up on vector's website for around
$30 on sale. I wish I would have bought more. Its also
~$300.

The cables based on Sony's 7-Pin plug have a switch on them that tells
your DAT recorder which input it should accept: analog or digital
(7-Pin).
We build our own 7-Pin plugs, and our 7-Pin output cable leaves the DAT
recorder listening to the analog input, so maybe that's what you want.
Most "Y" cables (combined input and output), including ours, are
designed for digital daisy chaining, so they're usually wired to select
the digital input. We could wire them otherwise if you had the need.
