I would really like to trade it to someone who can clean it up a little digitally. Please Drop me a note! Shawn ------------------------------ From: "lee bittner" Subject: too old to whoa Reply-To: southsur@hotmail.com Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 14:40:18 -0800 I recently chaperoned some junior high school girls to a Nelly Furtado concert (sometimes a parent's gotta do these things.) The venue was pretty overly-loud, but the tape brought the vocals down to the intelligible range. M-1, Sonic dsm6s-L>Delta audiophile 2496. Looking to trade for things taped in the last few months. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: seeking A/D converter with Firewire out advice Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 17:43:52 EST Hi all, I'm curious if anyone knows who might manufacture a reasonably priced analog/digital converter that has analog ins for both video and 2 audio channels and Firewire out. Does such a unit exist yet in the consumer realm? I know how to do this using a digital video camera as the converter, but would like to know the currently available alternatives. Any advice or suggestions appreciated. Alan ------------------------------ From: Sean Kennedy Subject: Re: Mics shaped like human head Reply-To: Sean Kennedy Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 17:55:21 -0500 For what its worth, another baffle-omni miking technique (I believe intended for speaker, not binaural reproduction) that people sometimes call a head. Crown had a solution called the SASS-B/P the former designed to support two B+K 4006s, the latter including their PZM microphones. Its not shaped like a head, but is sized similarly and shares the omni+baffle in common; there was someone who did use it to record the Grateful Dead a few times, most likely in the early 90s. (I suspect Crown introduced the product around 1988, but a pro audio person might know better.) In any case its not a trend from the 70s, but the Crown and SS/CSBs attached to nerf footballs have been used more commonly by "location tapers" of the type on this list. I believe SS offers a baffle. Len and Len, when did the nerf football thing start? Do you know who started it and when were baffles made available? Because of the difference in price the Crown might also be more common for ENG use than a KU-100, but Klay or someone would have to comment. The -P used to be internally powered and was quite noisy, but its been updated a few times. Schoeps and Neumann also have sphere diffuser/baffle solutions which I think are less common. Are there baffle-omni tapers out there? Dummy-head or SASS? I think Jecklin Disk and eyeglass/ear mics are common enough that other techniques would be more interesting. Sean ------------------------------ From: Sean Cartwright Subject: RE: Femi Kuti taping policy Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 18:16:02 -0500 Hey People, I don't know if anyone ever responded but I checked with Femi's tour manager and there is definitely no taping allowed. Femi's tour manager (a good friend of mine and comes from a taper friendly background) has had to go out into the audience and do what we all dread the most, confiscate tapes. Obviously, this does not happen at taper friendly festivals (although Femi still doesn't like it, or maybe more precisly, the record company he's contracted with doesn't like it), but if you're thinking of seeing Femi on his upcoming European tour, stealth or don't tape. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Peace, Sean ------------------------------ From: Bill Stewart Subject: Re:Anyone want a barebones system? Bill ------------------------------ From: Scott Hansen Subject: OT: Mini Disc question Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 15:53:12 -0800 Hey all - I know this is a DAT mailing list, but it is focused on taping, so I'm hoping you'll excuse the off topic nature. Anyway, a friend of mine was at a show with a buddy of his, who has a Mini Disc recorder. I'll let him explain the rest: "We were seated, perfect conditions, nobody speaking just beside the mic... It recorded. The TOC edit went well. But... When trying to read the MD to check the sound, it said : "Disc error". We tried three different MD players and it's the same on all of them. Somehow, something got messed up. You know, it's just like having data on a hard drive but you can't read it because of a defective TOC for example. But in the case of a MD, how can we access the music?" Anyone who knows of any solutions or knows of any websites that can provide ideas, please e-mail me of the list. Thanx in advance. The perfect solution to being more than 20 feet from your soundsource, and although the books don't mention this often, you can use omnis in an ORTF as well as AB setup. Definitely better low-end response than any cardioid, and MUCH less susceptible to wind noise. These have been used almost entirely as main mics for orchestral recording, and have never been dropped or popped. Serial numbers are close, but when I bought them sequential numbering was not an option, and Neumann maintains that if manufactured within a 12 month period they consider them to be matched. Three capsules available-- 2 for $875, all three for $1200. Guaranteed to perform as new. Comes with wind screens and wooden case that a holds a pair. S&H extra. ------------------------------ From: "Paul" Subject: new (free) sound recording and real-time analysis software Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 20:52:12 -0700 well I would make one suggestion, if you are going to disable the software, make it a *time* disabled product, not a functionality limitation. When working with large audio files, well... one has to be able to work with files MUCH larger than 128mb - so, off it goes to the recycle bin without me ever knowing if it would have been a worthwhile investment. ------------------------------ From: "Jason Roth" Subject: ISO: Tapers for Upcoming Zwan dates Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 20:43:01 -0800 Zwan...Billy Corgans new band has just anouced 3 new dates. The 12th, 13th and 14th of April at the Double Doors in Chicago. Tickets will go onsale through ticketmaster this Saturday at 1pm Centeral Time. Please note...the Double Doors is a 21+ venue, so either be 21...or have a nice fake. Also, it's my understanding that you can only buy tickets for one show only. So go for what ever is best for you. I will be trying for 4 tickets for one day. I doubt I will go out again, but I will try to get tickets for tapers. Zwan is a pro taping band. They have played 8 shows so far...all of which were taped with no hassles. No video is allowed, and I doubt stands will be allowed at such a small venue. Anyone who tapes any of these shows...I will B+P the first 8 Zwan shows for you, if you don't already have em. Also, I will cover ticket cost if needed. Please e-mail me if you plan on taping the shows with your rig and what date or dates you will cover. I am not sure what this mic was called but it >seems that it was all the rage in high end taping circles in the '70's." That must have been a binaural recording setup: a dummy head with two small omnidirectional microphones mounted where the eardrums would be on a human. A recent AES (Audio Engineering Society) Journal paper describes the many new dummy heads that have been developed recently. I have paraphrased some of that article, and added some of my own comments below. The article is: Minnaar P., Olesen S.K., Christensen F., Moller H., "Localization with Binaural Recordings from Artificial and Human Heads", Journal of the AES, Vol 49 (5), May 2001 http://www.aes.org 1) KEMAR - Knowles Electronics Manikin for Acoustic Research good ole KEMAR has been around the longest. KEMAR has a head, and torso. You can put small or large ears (pinnae) on him. Both were based on real human ear shapes. KEMAR is the most widely used dummy head in scientific research. I believe you supply your own mics for him. We use KEMAR extensively in my research lab. 2) Neumann KU100/ KU80 / KU81 This is just a head, and is used more frequently in the recording industry. For example, you could place the head in front of an orchestra. When the recording is played back over headphones, you would hear exactly what a conductor hears. This head has built in microphones. http://www.neumannusa.com/pages/products/micProduct.asp?microphone=KU100 3) Bruel & Kjaer A/S 4100 / 4128 / 5930 This head includes a torso, and built in microphones. http://www.bksv.com (search for 4100) 4) Head Acoustics GmbH - HMS III This has built in microphones, and 24-bit AD converters! It has a head and shoulders. I am not too familiar with this, but it looks like it is intended to be a state-of-the art research head, and not for general recording. http://www.head-acoustics.de/2s-und-v/hms/P-h30-e.htm 5) Cortex Electronic GmbH - MK1 It has built in mics, amps, A/D's, and is designed for playback over Sennheiser HE 60 electrostatic headphones.I couldn't find any info about this online. 6) Aachen University - ITA & Aalborg University - VALDEMAR These heads were developed at Univ's in Germany and Denmark, and, to the best of my knowledge, are not commercially available. 7) Your head! Stick some mics in your ears and stand still. Cost: free. Eric Angel >> There's also another, more recent (patented in 1989) dummy head microphone system being used by musicians, composers, tapers, and acoustic researchers at Bose, Briggs & Stratton, and a few other acoustic laboratory HRTF research facilities since the early 90s. This dummy head mic system is currently offered in two basic versions. 1) Personally Headwear any DSM model microphone (low costing stealth mic mode) as suggested on page: http://www.sonicstudios.com/dsm.htm and also mentioned on the recording tips page at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/tips.htm 2) Use any DSM microphone with the LiteGUY (or full size GUY) HRTF baffle as shown on page: http://www.sonicstudios.com/liteguy.htm for stand-alone type mic applications. For those interested in 3-D surround sound recording look to the references shown and this page for more discussion : http://www.sonicstudios.com/multitrk.htm The dimensional stereo mic patent can be viewed at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/patent.htm This microphone is currently quite active in recording live Music/Ambient sounds for CD releases, Film/Video production, and Sound Effects libraries. For some reason, little mention is found in references like those in previous posts, so look to my site for best references about this type of 'human-head' mic. Over a Gigabyte of downloadable Sounds/Music files recorded by Headworn and LiteGUY baffled versions are available for free at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm There is no better way to record exactly the experience of any live event in full speaker/headphone compatible surround-sound. Much better quality sound, and much lower costing than those referred to in the recent posts. Give this a very fun listen, a fast connection helps download the larger100+MEG files. We also had a problematic alarm system for arming the building. One night the alarm went off, and a technician received a call to enter the building w/ the police. Apparently that evening our soundman forgot to put Fritz away, from his post halfway up in the auditorium on a perch adjacent to the mazzanine aisle. As they were standing at the top of the auditorium w/ the lights out, one of the cops saw Fritz, pulled his gun and yelled FREEZE Mother****er! Fortunately he was told what the head was before he added a few more holes to it. Tom aka Musicarcade "Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils."
