You may want to check out Metric Halo. They recently released their
Mobile 2882 I/O unit (really designed for field laptop recording).
However it provides Analog balanced and unbalanced, FireWire, S/PDIF,
AES/EBU and ADAT optical in's and outs. It isn't cheap though (the list
is around $1500), and this may not work for what you want to do, but it
might be worth a look anyhow. I haven't seen the unit, but it certainly
looks intriguing.

Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 09:54:43 EST
In a recent trade, I got a copy of a fantastic John Hiatt show from "Utrecht" in the Netherlands....the date says 1984. The show clocks in approx 90 with filler from Mountain Stage (3/13/88) & Oakland, CA (8/89). This is truely a gem, except for the fact that there are nasty bumps at each index mark.
Therefore, I am looking for someone who has a clean copy on cd or dat without the describes flaws.
I have over 2,300 entries on my cd list for trade. If you have this show would you kindly contact me at mexminute@aol.com
Many thanks,

I'm interested in this subject as well. I've been pleased by results
I've gotten using trivial 1.3:1 to 1.5:1 compression. In the
"traditional" tab, #2 is set to Compress, 1.3 (or 1.5, whatever). The
graphical view should show a single diagonal line somewhat higher than
the gray dashed 1:1 line. I like 1.3 for music where the dynamic
range is particularly important (e.g. the very quiet band Low). 1.5
works well for more conventional pop music. Higher values start
sounding harsh and artificial to my ears.
While these settings have worked pretty well for me, I would like to
know more about the correct/proper/professional way of doing this.
I'm a complete neophyte and am sure there's a lot more to it. With
this in mind, I always keep my originals around for trades, or in case
I learn a better approach down the road.

I 'm looking for a solution to power some Core Binaurals. All I need is
voltage, as it seems my "new" used D3 does not supply phantom power. I had
been told before that it does, but this is not the case in reality.
It bothers me to see a simple circuit in a box selling for $60. Is there
anyone out there who could steer me to a diagram of a simple "battery box"?
Or, better still does somebody make on for a resaonable price?
Just wondering -

First $90 gets it. Sunday it goes to eBay if it's not sold yet. I'll pay

Hi,
I just noticed Yamaha has a CD recorder with a Hard Drive.
You can edit like a minidisc but no loss of quality. 16bit CD quality.
And no computer needed.
Analog and Digital In/Out.
Is anyone here using this unit.
Sounds pretty cool.

I have used, and own an Ego Sys U2A. On the settings for
the unit,
there is no frequenct specified, but it is limited to 32
bit. Opening
up Samplitude 2496, it looks like it will allow 96 mhz
recording.
As I bought the unti for transferring DAT's or other
audio sources to my
HD, having 44.1 and 48 khz, is all I really need, I
think.

Subject: Zoltrix Pro6 coax OUT problem
Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 13:29:28 -0500
I have a brand new Zoltrix Nightingale Pro 6 with the optical / digital
module. Everything works great except for the coax spdif OUT, which as far
as I can tell isn't doing anything. I'm trying to send a 44.1 or 48 kHz wav
from my pc to my Sony PCM-M1 DAT recorder using the coax spdif OUT. When I
try this, I don't receive any errors on the M1 - I get nothing at all. The
coax IN works perfectly. The strange thing I noticed was that when I enable
spdif OUT in the drivers, the optical output lights up. So I was thinking
that maybe it's only sending the signal to the optical out and not the coax
out.
People were telling me about a coax hack for the Zoltrix. I had a look, and
the coax hack is simply for the spdif IN. All you do is solder a connection
from the 2-pin spdif IN on the board (J11 or whatever it is) to an RCA jack.
I had a look at my board to see where all the connections were going. Of
course to do this I had to remove all the "void warranty if removed"
stickers, but oh well.
From what I can tell, the spdif coax IN actually IS connected properly as
is. It is connected to it's own pin which goes back to the main board, and
it is also connected directly to the J11 2-pin spdif IN. So there's no need
to do the hack on the new boards, because you can see just by looking at the
board that the coax IN is hardwired to the other spdif IN. And besides, the
coax IN works flawlessly for me.
The interesting thing I noticed was that the coax OUT is wired together with
the optical OUT. This is not the case with the coax IN - the optical in and
the coax in go to separate pins. But it explains why the optical OUT lights
up when I want to use my coax OUT... but it doesn't explain why I can't get
a signal out of the coax OUT.
I really need an oscilloscope to figure out what's going on. For all I
know, I'm getting a signal out of the coax OUT, but my M1 isn't detecting it
for some reason.
If anyone's had any experience with this problem, or something similar to
it, let me know. It's driving me crazy!

Subject: USB- Limitations
Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 23:50:56 +0100
Hi All
I got an answer from Max :
quote:
I use USB (analog and MIDI) as well as MIDI input/output to my computer. To
my knowledge, 48khz is the maximum sampling frequency currently available by
samplers, DAT, and interfaces regardless if USB, Firewire, or MIDI.
However, some cards and sampling 'resolution' can be 24-32 bits depending on
the type of card but has nothing to do with transfer rates (usually in the
90-100khz range).
48khz at 16-bits is not really a 'limitation' if you think about it. A
stereo signal at 48khz translates to about 22-24khz and still is above human
perception of digital interval (generally thought to be 20-21khz).
What your problem might be is in editing a 16-bit sample within a 24-bit
program (transfer, EQ, etc...). If this is the case, then the problem is not
in your transfer rate/resolution, but in keeping your resolution consistent
(ie, 16-bit with 16-bit and so forth). This applies to any means of digital
transfer of samples; firewire, USB, files from MP3 and so forth.
I hope this helps,
Max
unquote.
My answer :
Hi Max
Thanks for reply
For a lontg time I used an isa digital soundcard (Multiwav Digital Pro)
maximum sampling freq was 48 khz max wordlenght 16 bit.
That card did not have any ad or da converter on board.
The connected dat recorder had them.
In wave editing progs like Wavelab Cool edit pro Saw24 plus pro etc
i could tranfer to my hd to a wav file with max 48 khz samplerate and 16
bits.
Now I am using a pci card RME Digi 96/8 PST (in a home made portable hd
recorder)
maximum sampling freq is 96 khz max wordlength 24 bit
That card has 24 bits ad and da converters on board and spdif and aes-ebu..
.
With that card I can transfer to my hd wav files with max 96 khz and 24 bit.
I use those files for making dvd audio disk (burned with a A03 pioneer
burner)
dvd audio 2 channel stereo is usung 96 khz and 24 bit.
Further for common cd use I dither down from 24 bit to 16 bit with the
apogee UV 22 HR algoritme
(plug in in Cubase 5 and therefore available in WaveLab 3 (Wave lab 4 has
its own UV 22 plug in !)
to keep the upper 8 bit information.
And after downdithering I resample from 96 khz to 44.1 khz.
I do have a usb U2A (ego sys) and a usb sonic datport (coax) from opcode.
The max sample freq from both is 48 khz
both have 24 bit ad and da converters.
In spite of the 24 bit converters the tranfer to hd has a max of 48 khz and
16 bit.
I thought because USB 1 is limited to that.
Helas the u2a and the datport do NOT dither down from 24 bit to 16 bit but
simply truncate the 8 bits above bit 16 !!
I have not seen any USB 1 card or device that is capable of tranferring
to HD with a higher max than 48 khz samplingfreq and a higher max than a
wordlength of 16 bit.
The new coming Mini-Me from Apogee is an USB 1 device!
It has 24 bit 96 khz ad and da converters.
It has aes-ebu (balanced xlr) and coax spdif out and
I am sure that the 96khz 24 bit is available on the aes-ebu and spdif
outputs.
But what is available on the usb output ?? is there 96 khz with 24 bit to
transfer to HD ?
I do not think so.!
And that is why (IHMO) the Mini-Me has build in the UV-22 HR dithering.
That gives the opportunity to go from 24 bit ad converters by 44.1 khz or
max 48 khz to 16 bit with ok downdithering and to transfer that signal
via usb to hd keeping the 8 upper bit information.
So my question is am I right and further why does Apogee not use firewire
or usb 2 in the coming Mini-Me ?? like they do now for the 8000 ! Than such
tranfers are (IHMO) possible.
Because I think that many dat heads know a lot I put your email and my
answer on that mail in the coming Dat Heads edition.
BTW edithing is an other chapiter.
I do only classical music. So no effects reverbs etcetera . If there is only
cut and past and simple fade in and out to make the tracks for cd the I do
that that after downdithering and after resampling.
Otherwise I do it in 32 bit
Onno.

Hi
Look for the Canopus ADVC 100
it has DV in out analog video in out and stereo audio in and out
and is very smal and has a decent prof look.
It converts DV to analog and analog to dv on the fly.
it does pal and ntsc and has a bypass for macrovision.
It works with any ochi compliant firewirecard (and oc canopus propietary
cards).
I have the unit now for 3 weeks and I love it (about 350 USD)
It is replacing my dv camera. (no tear and wear)
www.canopuscorp.com
To stay in the audio field it is possible to transfer analog audio to hd via
firewire
direct to a wav file but it is limited to 48 khz 16 bit.
You need a special prog for it. Normal the audio is embedded in the
avi file.
I tried several other converters (Dazzle Hollywood fi) but this one is far
out the best.
