hi,
taped adrian belew and the bears last nite at the mercury lounge in NYC.
great show, one cavaet about the recording. i had planned on recording the
opener, but got there late, just in time for the bears start. i had put a
short tape in for the opener and in the rush to get taping, forgot . the
merc lounge is tiny, and easy to get busted taping in,so i didnt take any
chances swaping tapes or even setting the 32k switch.. luckily, i used a
minidisc as a backup, so the end of the gig is MD, not DAT. i wont say where
the MD starts, that for you to decide :). anyone who wants it, let me know.
i'd be very interested in belew acoustic boots .

Subject: Royer SF-12 or Neumann USM-69
Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 02:06:25 +0100
Hi
I have two Royers 121 ribbon mikes and one SM 69 (fet) Neumann mike.
I use the two Royers always in blumlein ( the sf 12 does have two ribbons in
one case placed in blumlein situation)
The sm69 I use mostley in xy with a setting between omni and cardioid.
I record only classical music (mostley piano and violin).
Ihmo the sound quality of both systems is exellent but the stereo picture of
the Royers is better than the SM69.
Shortley said in the stereo picture you "see" the instruments and they stay
where the are from high to low. With the SM 69 they walk a little through
the picture.
Most people who are listening to the recordings like more the Royers.
They like the clear and total open sound.
I record only classical music, mostley piano and violin.
I suggest you not to buy the sf 12 but to buy two 121's.
Sometimes you need one ore two separate figure 8's !!
The only thing is that you have to make something special to place
the 121s on top of each other to get the blumlein.
If you want to buy the Neumann go for the sm not for the usm.
the sm has the separated powersuply with the settingsknobs on it.
That allows you to control the mike (from fg 8 to omni) from distance.

Subject: Royer SF-12 or Neuman USM-69
Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 17:34:20 -0800 (PST)
oh boy, these are like boysenberries and rasberries. two completed
different flavors, but both are excellent for certain purposes. i have
used the royer and i own the neumann (although if i had more call for the
type of thing the royer does, and if i had more doe, i'd own both).
both of these are mics with a sonic signature. neither is what i would
describe as flat. if, like most tapers, you seek a mic which is flat (ala
the B&K 4006 or 4011 or certain schepps), neither is going to float your
boat (although the USM would come closest). the royer is richer sounding
and has a smooth, but rolled off top end. the neumann is more detailed,
and clear, with a more extended top end that is slightly raising and a
slight roll off of the extreme bottom (both of which can be altered by
someone like klaus heyne, but klaus ain't cheap, about 2grand for the
above mentioned mod). the rising high end can be a good thing, for
example, when recrding at a distance it helps compensate the high end
roll off caused by air absoption. in fact, the high end raise was used
in the USM by neumann at the request of the german broadcast network for
use in recording symphany orcastras at the usual concert hall distances.
the royer has a larger proximity effect, but at a distance has a similar
low end rolloff. the proximately boost can be nice when using just one
"side" of the SF-12 to record a guitar amp (gives a nice body effect). i
have directly compared both as drum overheads and as top end leslie mics.
the royer was very nice on drums for a classic jazz sound, the neumann for
a more modern sound. on leslie, the royer yielded a darker, less intense
sound, good for blues and background textures, and the USM yield a nice
bright high end to counter balance a deep low ended leslie- good leads for
most rock.
my main use of the USM is for things like studio recording of acoustic
guitar (both S/M and coincident), congas, resonator guitar (of various
kinds) and things of that nature. if isolation is not a problem, it
works quite well on difficult things like accordiene and banjo.when i
want a stereo pair of tracks and a little room ambience. i have also used it
for vocals on occasion.
if you are thinking about S/M, i would not recommned either for your
typical FOB, hockey ring recording arena rock band. i'd pick the USM if i
was doing a coincident pair from the same FOB spot (both the low end and
high end are more appropriate for this type of situation- high because of
air absorption, low because such spaces tend to be dark already). if you
are going to mic acoustic sources from near or on stage, or taping rock
bands using on stage placement (some bands allow this), then you are going
to have to decide which flavor you want, as i said, neither is flat
and both have distinctive personalities.
As you can see, i am very enthusiastic about stereo mics and, in
particular, S/M recording. If i had the money, i'd love to have an
excellently maintained $8,000 vintage tube SM-69 or C-24. but be
forwarned, recording with a stereo mic is very deceptive in its apparent
simplicity. coincident techniques, and S/M in particular, require a very
subtle hand, a very finessed technique. but if you are after simplicity,
an easy set up which almost always yields a very good recording, i'd go
with near coincident cardiods (ORTF and variations thereof). it is a more
forgiving technique, important when time and access is short.

Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 21:20:37 -0500
Since I have cut way down on my taping as of late, I have decided to sell
off some gear.
I have two items for sale:
One Sony SBM-1 A/D converter (with “line-in” modification by Doug Oade)
One Oade Bros I/O “Active” digital cable (for use with Sony M1, D100, D8
etc.)
I purchased this modified SBM-1 (new) in Sep 2001 from the Oade Brothers.
The “line-in” modification was performed Doug Oade. This modification
increases the resolution of the SBM-1 from the standard 20 bits to 24 bits.
(The SBM-1 uses an algorithm to output a 16 bit digital signal.) This
modified SBM-1 has the two standard SBM-1 digital outputs (one seven pin
female & one seven pin male.) I have used the SBM five times with great
results. It has not been used since mid-December 2001 & has been kept in a
zip lock baggie in a drawer. The SBM-1 is in excellent shape with no
scratches, marks etc. I have all the original accessories, paperwork and
packaging material. The cost of the SBM-1 was $400 & the modification was
an additional $250.
The Oade “Active” Digital cable was also purchased (new)in Sep 2001. I have
used this cable (in conjunction with the SBM-1) five times with great
results. The cable is in excellent shape. I have the original receipt,
which I will include with the cable. (There was no literature or
“official” packaging materials with this digital cable.) The cost of this
digital cable was $155.
I am not sure what these two items are worth at this time, since they are no
longer being sold. If you are interested, please make an offer. I would
prefer to sell these items as a package (i.e. buyer takes both the SBM-1 &
the digital cable.) Preference for the sale goes to the individual who is
willing to expedite the transaction quickly.
Buyer to pay all shipping/insurance costs. I live in NY State.
Please direct all offers/inquiries to:
pdelima@dreamscape.com
Thanks,
Paul

Does anybody out there wish to part with a spare Oade active 7-pin
cable? I called the Oade Bros. and they only have the passives,
which I hear has been the case for a while. I've been without my
original active cable since 4/18/01 when some bastard swiped mine!
So the only way I will probably get another one is to post to DAT-
Heads or look on ebay.
If I do an ebay search, what should I put? "RK-DA10P"? I can't
remember the exact alphanumeric name of it. Is that right?
I prefer an active cable that is still in very good working
condition and is able to pass a steady, streamin' digi-signal to
an M1. Hours of use is no biggie, as long as it works fine.
Please, no bunk cables!
I can be accepting of price within reason.
Thanks for your time.
Peace and music,
Brian

Purchased from Core Sound a couple of years ago. These
mics have seen little use. They come with a battery
box (w/ switchable bass filter), wind screens, and
alligator clips. They sound great and they are in
excellent condition. I'm heading back to school and I
have little use for them. I would rather see them go
to someone who would use them. I purchased them for
$1000 but I'm very willing to negotiate. Make me an offer!

I've always been told to set the Mic sensitivity to low, but the other
night I taped the first set of YMSB with it on high. I thought it seemed
weird that the recording level was only at "3" or "4" instead of "7" or "8".
Does that make sense? It also seems that the first set sounds just a bit
crisper than the second. Anyone have input or suggestions? I was using NAk
