From: acffh <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #229 D8 High/ Low Mic sensitivity question Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 18:21:27 -0600 It makes perfect sense. Your mics were more sensitive (to sound pressure), so you didn't need as much "knob" (gain). That's a good way to run for relatively quiet shows. As for the second set not being as crisp as the first- when was the last time you changed the batteries in your mics? I don't know how fast the Naks eat 'em. . . low voltage could cause noise to creep up compared to signal level. Did you have to run the second set at a higher knob setting on the deck? Slight differences could cause noticeable noise. Another possibility is that the first set actually sounded better. -tom Subject: D8 High/ Low Mic sensitivity question I've always been told to set the Mic sensitivity to low, but the other night I taped the first set of YMSB with it on high. I thought it seemed weird that the recording level was only at "3" or "4" instead of "7" or "8". Does that make sense? It also seems that the first set sounds just a bit crisper than the second. Anyone have input or suggestions? I was using NAk Cm300 (cp1)>D8. Thanks again, Chris -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

From: Keith Forman <kfor5311@postoffice.uri.edu> Subject: Newly Uncovered GD Reels?...Possibly...May Need Assistance! Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 20:18:30 -0500 Hey Ya'll, So, here is the story. A friend of mine works in a head shop in the middle of nowhere in Rhode Island - Charlestown, RI to be exact. A couple of weeks ago he called me to tell me that his boss had about 10 reel to reels (8 hrs. of each) of Grateful Dead recordings taped at the Fillmore East from 1967-1970. Being well read on my compendiums and deadbases, I quickly thought to myself, "There sure are a bunch of Fillmore East dates that have never been circulated, especially during 67 and 68." So I began spouting questions at my buddy. Here is what I got: Supposedly, this guy who owns the reels was given them in a shroud of secrecy. Some of his buddies (3 or 4) had worked at the Fillmore East and recorded the shows. They all swore never to give them to anyone. One of these people who worked at the Fillmore lived with the guy who now owns the reel to reels. Supposedly, this individual got into some shit with the law or something and bailed, leaving behind these reels. Is it un-circulated material? As of now, I do not know! Now, I am certainly aware of many stories surrounding the 2/13 and 2/14/70 tapes in which a couple of brothers, who were ushers at the Fillmore, taped those shows. But, I have a solid inclination that these are completely different shows, with entirely different lineage. In the next week or two I will be going to this persons house to do some investigation. Here is where you guys come in. If these are un-circulated shows they MUST be transferred to DAT. And unfortunately, I do not think my trusty D-8 is right for the job. So, if they are what I think they are, I am requesting the assistance (and equipment) of a/some kind soul(s) on this list. Preferably someone who has done Reel to Reel transfers in the past. If this is you, and you think you would be interested in helping, please e-mail me. I will keep updated the list and anyone who contacts me on this somewhat intriguing story. Don't get your hopes up, this could all be highly circulated material. Nonetheless, I am feeling reel-ly good about the possibility of finding a long-lost hidden gem in there. Peace, Keith in Rhode Island ___________________________________________ "Some folks would be happy just to have ONE dream come true"--Hunter/Garcia =============================== <<<My CD-List>>> http://phishhook.yi.org/lists/Kfor5311 or http://www.phishhook.com/lists/Kfor5311 <<My Home-Page>> http://thecolonel.homestead.com/index.html ___________________________________________
From: SAlpert5@aol.com Subject: USB Digital I/O Cards Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 21:49:15 EST I am in the market for a digital I/O card for my laptop, which has both USB and Firewire. I had posted a few months ago, with detailed information as to why Edirol themselves admit that the UA-3 is not necessarily "bit-for-bit accurate" (making that card "not" what I am looking for!). They blamed the problem on Microsoft's USB (1) drivers, which are allegedly not intended for audio. They at the time suggested the (more expensive) UA-5, which uses "ASIO" USB Drivers, which are bit-for-bit accurate. I have not purchased anything yet, but I was hoping a fellow DAT-head could e-mail me OFF THE LIST with suggestions as to whether the UA-5 might be a good unit. Alternately, I see that Creative Labs(Soundblaster) has released their first EXTERNAL soundcard, called the EXTIGY. I wrote to them, hoping to learn what drivers the Extigy uses. Interstingly, though their product uses Microsoft's drivers, they say their product is bit for bit accurate. Does anyone have any experience with this product? Here is the reply I received from Creative Labs: Response from Creative: 2/25/2002 4:42:00 PM ASIO drivers have to do with latency. ASIO drivers have a lower latency than VXD or WDM. So VXD or WDM will have a higher latency then ASIO drivers but shouldn't loose any information just get it there less quickly and due to USB only get it there at 1.5mb per second. A USB device, not using ASIO drivers, will have a higher latency but bit for bit should still be as accurate as a device using ASIO drivers. Jody Creative Labs Technical Support =============== So they say that there is no problem. So back to my initial post a few months ago on this topic, and I ask, why is the Edirol UA-3 (and presumably the newer UA-1a and UA-1d units) not bit for bit accurate, if the same driver is used on this product, and it claims to be accurate? Thanks in advance for any replies. Please reply off the list, since I don't get to read every issue.

It is a GA show, so does anyone know where the TS will be?? (I've be to the Theatre before to tape Cowboy Junkies, and they just let us tape back by the SBD). I was going to run my CS HEBs(DPA 4061) FOB, but they are in for repairs. I would especially like to patch from someone using DPA 402x mics and an AD1K (but I open to just about anything), since I am looking upgrade my rig with these items (I will patch with a DA-P1). I have a V2 that I can throw into the mix if necessary, and of course a few beers. Please email me if we can set something up. From: "Will Herrmann" <willherrmann@attbi.com> Subject: FS: Core Sounds Binaurals Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2002 16:30:00 -0500 Hi Folks, Seeing as I haven't gotten as much use from these as I had hoped, and I could use the cash, I am putting my Core Sounds Binaural mics up for sale. These mics are in excellent shape, as I have used them very sparingly and always keep them in a dust-free case when not in use. They include the external battery box (without the bass roll-off feature), mini-wind screens, all cables, and I'll also throw in the plastic case which I store them in. I have made some very impressive recordings with these mics running line-in to my Sony M1, and for the size, they can't be beat for stealth applications. I have gone to several shows expecting to patch into the board or other mics, only to discover that I was the only taper in attendance. Such shows would have never been recorded at all had I not brought the CSB's as a back-up. These are also a great way for anyone considering getting into taping to "test the waters". Because they come with external power, they are compatible with any DAT/MD recorder with a mini line-in. New, theses mics would cost $230 (www.core-sound.com). I would like to get $125 for them, plus the cost of shipping. If you're interested, e-mail me and we can work out a payment option that works best. Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2002 16:46:13 -0500 Hey, I have an M1 and am wondering if there is any way to find out the sampling rate of a tape when I put in in. I do not believe it's listed in the instruction manual, but I know some other manufacturers have ways to figure out these things with their DAT machines. Thanks in advance matt
