From: PWKOMANECKY@aol.com Subject: FS: Tascam DAP1 Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 12:35:03 EST Hello – Looking to sell my Tascam Dap1. Purchased in late 1998 and overhauled by Paul Plotnick @ Pro Digital in October of 2000. The deck has only been used three or four times since. I have no idea how many hours are on it but I would say that it’s definitely far, far below 500. I have two internal batteries that work fine but are basically useless and the original ac adaptor has been modified with a three pin mini xlr to accept dc power (typical). The deck is in fantastic condition both cosmetically and mechanically and has been kept in a “wetsuit” even when in use. And has only been used as a record deck. I am selling only because I have too many decks, too little time and not enough bicycles. I would really like to get $850 but will entertain all offers. Please email off list if interested…… Tell your friends. Paul

From: Clark Guy <guy.clark@sbt.siemens.com> Subject: How to record an orchestra (longish) Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 12:07:39 -0600 HI! I agree with much of what the others have written on this subject, so let me reprhase what has been said with a bit of my own experience. Concert (location) recording of "classical" ensembles (orchestras, concert bands, brass bands, and small ensembles like brass quintets) is all I do. I record primarily the groups with whom I play (trumpet). Thus, I play in a lot of church spaces, and for this reason I am making these suggestions. I also favor placing a pair of cardioids in a 90 degree (45 degrees on either side of a line drawn through the mics and the conductor) pattern, 3 to 4 meters above the floor (unless there are ceiling fans or HVAC noise coming from the ceiling). The stand should be placed fairly close to the conductor (maybe 3 to 5 meters in back of her/him). This is to avoid the excessive room ambience (echoes) that would become a problem if the mics are too far back from the group. Sometimes, if time is a problem, I will place spaced omnis 2 to 3 meters away from the edge of the performance area, and spaced 2 to 3 meters on either side of the conductor. The mics are pushed up as high as my omni stands go, which is about three meters high. This can be a bit heavy on the strings, but the extended bass range of my omnis helps to fill out what might otherwise be a bit top heavy a recording. The BEST advise given is to go to some rehearsals and practice recording them!!!! You'll want to set you levels so that you don't either overload the tape, or waste too much dynamic range by being too low. I have found that if I set the levels to -12dB during the orchestra's tuning period, I'm usually good to go. (Ok, if it's a noisy piece, like a Strauss tone poem or Mahler symphony (like I just played last night) you might want to back off to -15dB during tuning. Anyway, my philosopy is to make as good a record of a performance as possible, as though the mics were placed in the best seat in the house. I realize that some people prefer to make the recording as the performance, and do alot of tweaking, and that's fine as long as it sounds good, but my tendency is to make it as simple as possible (especially since I also need to concentrate on MAKING the music as well, most of the time!) I've been pretty fortunate in the twentyfive years or so that I've been recording my concerts, and RARELY had a bad recording due to mic choice and placement. (it helps to push the record button before the music starts, it also helps to have the mic preamp turned on, it's REALLY nice to have good cables so you don't pick up AC hum!!! ;-) ) Hope this helps!!!! Guy Clark
From: randy@monkeybiz.Stanford.EDU Subject: sexmob does bond Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 10:41:06 -0800 (PST) i wouldn't worry too much about 'blowing' the recording by having your equipment flake out...you tried to fix the problem, and it didn't work. before sending the deck out for a jack replacement, you might check whether you get dropouts using another cable/pair of mics as input (just to verify whether its the jack or the cable). spraying electronics contact cleaner into the jack might help (if the problem is gunk inside that's keeping the cable pin from properly contacting the sleeve), but it will be messy; canned air might be a reasonable (and cleaner) alternative the sexmob+medeski lineup has played out here on the west coast (doing bond) at least twice. ...what happens once often happens again... -rand0m
From: Kevin Brown <kevin5brown@yahoo.com> Subject: The Death of DAT? Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 11:03:56 -0800 (PST) I am sad to think that we might be seeing the end of DAT too. But I still think there is flexibility and sound quality with DAT that neither MD or CD-R/RW at least can match. Hard drives are a new ball game, and might be the best of all worlds some day. OK, stupid question time. Aaron mentioned that he'd would like 24 bit/ 96 kHz with 128x oversampling. So, does that mean the bit rate would be: 24 bits * 96,000 samples / sec * 128 = 295 mega-bits/sec ? (Not mega-bytes.) Anyone know the bit rates for things like SCSI, USB, Firewire? Is this do-able, at a reasonable cost? Cheers! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! Mail - the world's greatest free email! http://mail.yahoo.com/

From: "Paul Chrostowski" <pchrosto@cfl.rr.com> Subject: RE: The Death of DAT? Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 15:59:55 -0500 I've been thinking of the same thing, but a much cheaper version. 96KHz/24bit A>D on line level inputs only 96KHz/24bit D>A for headphone and line level out digital I/O on coax and firewire 20-40GB laptop 2.5"HD menu driven LCD display for creating, deleting and appending sets Most importantly this can all be done in about the size of a D8 for stealthing. Since a HD recorder is only meant for short term storage with final production work and storage done on a PC you could skip some of the sample rate conversion and bit reduction circuitry in order to keep cost down. Phantom power and preamp could be added but this would affect battery life and cost. I'd like something ultra portable, but if you like an all-in-one solution I can't argue with your choices. =) Take Care, Paul >From: CatalystX <catalystx@attbi.com> >Subject: The Death of DAT? >Date: Sun, 10 Mar 2002 15:38:59 -0800 >24bit/96khz A/D 128x oversampling analog input via XLR/TRS connectors >115db+ of dynamic range >High quality mic preamps with phantom power and selectable attenuator >Unbalanced/balanced line level input >Separate L/R level controls with selectable bass roll-off >Digital input via AES/EBU, coax and optical S/PDIF, Firewire >Unbalanced/balanced analog output via XLR/TRS connectors >Headphone output with a 1/4" connection >Digital output via AES/EDU, coax and optical S/PDIF, Firewire >Selectable sampling rate and word length digital output >Upgradable hard drive with large RAM buffers for skip protection >Rechargable lithium ion battery with at least 6 hours of life >Built-in, fully adjustable compressor >LCD interface, with upgradable OS >Ability to interface with all major operating systems via Firewire

(Not mega-bytes.) No, the oversampled bits aren't stored; 24 bits/sample * 96,000 samples/channel/second * 2 channels = about 4.6 Mb/sec.
