Hey all,
I know JID allows taping, but I was wondering if anyone knows what
the deal is exactly. I'll be seeing them @ the Keswick in Glenside,
PA which is a reserved seating venue. Can you tape from your seat?
Thanks.

Does anyone happen to have an extra mic stand they might sell? I've got a
clamp, so it doesn't really need to be threaded. I'm looking for a 12'-15'
stand that's fairly sturdy. Anyone who might have one, please drop me a
line at PHphishPH@aol.com. Thanks a lot and take care.

Hi all,
This is a real treasure. I recorded one of his last shows. I am not sure how many more he played in the last couple of months before his death but I am quite sure very few were taped. I don't see any of John's shows on lists never mind the final months. This is a show of him solo acoustic, just the man and his guitar. I know there may not be a bunch of fans on this list but consider that when everything is stripped down to just the songwriter and his guitar there isn't much difference between him and other folk singers. It is on 2 discs and the sound is terrific (except for the hick that sat in front of me with occasional comments). I will set up trades for anyone interested. E-mail is jagabrieljr@aol.com

In my mind the future is IC-based recorders not hard drive-based recorders.
Why mess with moveable/breakable parts when you don't have to?
CompactFlash cards are currently available in 512MB size. They aren't
cheap, close to $400, but like other ICs the density will go up and the
price will drop. RAM quadruples in size every three years, or, Moore's Law
says CPUs double in power every 18 months which is more or less saying the
same thing. So in 18 months there SHOULD be CompactFlash or equivalent
cards available with 1GB each. Put two of them together and there's your 3
hours of continuous record time currently available with DAT.
The new Denon DN-F20R IC recorder has XLR and RCA ins and records on two
CompactFlash cards. Literature says it works with 192MB CompactFlash cards,
don't know if larger sizes are supported. If they are then with two 512MB
cards you could record around 90 minutes of stereo at 16 bit 48KHz. It
doesn't support higher bit/sampling rates, but it can do compression for
longer run times. Runs on 6 AA batteries, 8.2" x 6.3" x 1.7" list price
$1299 plus the cost of the CompactFlash cards. So bottom line is it's not
there yet, but a big step in the right direction.
http://www.denon.com/catalog/photo.asp?s=pro&p=DN%2DF20R&f=DNF20R%2Ejpg&c=47
The Marantz PMD 690 is a stereo flash recorder which has a single Type III
PC card slot. The slot can accept a CompactFlash card or an IBM microdrive
(1GB). The unit is slightly larger than the Denon (10.4" x 7.3" x 2.0") and
slightly more expensive at $1499 list. Also has XLR and 1/4" inputs and
SPDIF out. It appears to have a max sampling rate of 48KHz and word length
of 16 bit like the Denon.
http://www.superscope-marantzpro.com/Marantz/PMD680/pmd690.html
Lastly there's the Tascam "Pocketstudio 5" 4 track recorder. Not suitable
for our needs, only does MP3, but looks smaller than the others and also
records on a CompactFlash card, and it's $599.
Yes DAT is dying fast but there are exciting things on the horizon.

Subject: question about powering the at853...
Date: Tue, 12 Mar 2002 21:08:41 -0500
i have made some good tapes with my at853s (from sound pros). however, as
most tapers, i am trying to get the most out of my equipment without
spending too much. as far as i know, there are 2 ways to power the at853s:
"plug-in" power from a deck, and the battery/bass roll-off box. from some
information i've garnered recently, it seems that the more power you give
your mics, the better sound the will produce. so, there are 2 other
scenarios i'd like to consider (and i'd like your help): using either the
12v or 48v denecke phantom power box to power the mics. the at specs say
that the mics can use anywhere from 9-52v, so i assume both are safe. also,
will the bass roll-off feature of the battery box (also from sound pros)work
with having the 9 volt battery in there? or can i run the phantom power and
the 9 volt for even better sound? any help would be appreciated.

I have taped Pete at two shows, not really stealth, but not out in the open.
He did an instore he and was going to be playing that night, so I asked
his bassist and bandmates if I could tape. Pete overheard and the bands
reply was, yeah, just don't be obvious about it ... whatever that means. I
don't know what has changed since I taped last August, but I don't know
about sbd patches. Never tried. When he came back through town, the guy
running the board was miking it ... I would just bring your mics and ask to
patch. If they say no, use the mics ...

The 48V specification for the AT-853's is for the original AT's with
their three-wire interface from Audio Technica when using their
proprietary AT-8531 battery boxes. The battery boxes use a 1.5V
alkaline cell that delivers about 0.95 volts to the actual mic FET
board. The boxes also have a small pre-amp that boosts the signal a bit
before passing it on to the XLR's. When 48V phantom is supplied to the
boxes, the battery in them is effectively isolated by a switching diode,
and the pre-amp and the FET board are powered by the phantom voltage;
however, it is a relatively low voltage that makes it to the mic body
FET board (about 5V or so). Sending anymore than 9V or so would surely
fry the FET. I'm not sure how SP wires their mics, but I think they use
the same FET board, so I would not run anything more than 9V to the mics
and I'd probably just stick with the battery box SP provides.
This information is based on my analysis of the circuits and direct
measurement of the voltages and should not be taken as authoritative.
Anyone with any additional information or corrections is encouraged to
reply.

Subject: Grateful Dead Dats Offer - Round 6
Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 07:46:55 -0800
Hi,
This is Round 6 of my Dats for CD blanks offer.
Since 1997 I have traded dats, primarily Grateful Dead. I am converting my
dat collection to cd. This is the 6th batch. I will not break it up into
smaller batches so please don't ask. Round 6 goes to one person. If
someone wants to get a quick start in the GD dat world this is a great way
to do it.
Dats are Maxell labeled, Maxell unlabeled, or Sony DDS. Some are 60m, some
are
90m. All have printed j-cards with song lists, lineage, etc.. Lineage is
as it was provided to me at the time of trade. Caveat emptor, these are
great tapes, however, they may have the occasional anomaly. I acquired them
primarily through trades on BUDD and other credible sources...
The following 57 shows reside on 67 dats. Several shows are filler on
tapes. Several of the dats have filler not listed in this posting.
I'll accept three (3) Taiyo Yuden blanks for each dat. This totals 200 cdr
blanks.
This exchange is well below current market prices for new dat blanks (as
published at various
sites, including TTapes.) I will pay postage to ship the dats to you for
continental US only.
If interested, please use the following in the subject field: Grateful Dead
Dats Offer - Round 6
Thanks.
