Seth,
Perfect idea, you are a genius. Now all we need is
a concensus of opinion or standard and I think we all
can be happy.

When I record to my Sony D8 I set my average level(digital-in) at 12(as
suggested by Sony's manual). This allows headroom for the peaks, such as all
the clapping between songs and loud parts of the show without distortion and
clipping. I find that the resulting recordings dont have much amplitude and
require my playback systems to run at almost max volume to hear a decent
playback level.
I have played with various options of editing the recordings before burning,
but they all have "tradeoffs". I have "Normalized" or sometimes used a
"Compression/limiter" setting. Since crowd cheering and clapping is often
the loudest part of a show, it often results in clipping or other distortion
of those parts. Not a really big deal as the music is all clean and now at
an acceptable volume so I can CRANK IT during playback. But getting clipping
or "WAH-WAH" type sounds during each clapping session is a bit annoying.
There must be a better way to get everything onto CDR at an acceptable
volume.

Hey Spyro,
I know we've had some e-mail problems, but I just wanted to let you know the SBM-1 arrived safe and sound yesterday afternoon. I appauligize again for the confusion last week. Don't ever hesitate to let me know if I can be of any help to you in the future. Also, look forward to some sample tapes that I'll hopefully have available to send your way.

If I do this at all (I rarely bother--if the people who end up with the
CD's don't like it, they can change it), but if I do, I will "overlap"
for lack of a better term. The last 4 seconds or so will also be the
first 4 seconds of the next disk. I do the fades in these overlapping
sections and mark them with trackid's so you can just clip them out if
you want to put the music back onto DAT or other longer media.

I'm lucky enough to be sitting on a set of this new anthology and to help=20
with the cause of spreading it around, I'll do a B&P for this 6CD set to=20
someone who will offer it back up and continue the spread. (I'm doing a B&P=20
offer on several lists, so only 1 to each, but) I'll also take a few trades.=
=20
I'm primarily looking for pre-75 Dead/Garcia (specificly Dead: 2/2/69,=20
7/12/70, 1/24/71, & 4/14/71 and in case anyone happens to have it, I'm also=20
hunting down a copy of Patty Griffin's unreleased "Silver Bell" album for a=20
good friend, which I understand is beginning to make the rounds.
Send a list if you'd enjoy a trade. This thing kicks serious ass. I'm blown=20
away... =20
Otherwise, send a list if you'd enjoy a trade. Stu

14. Silver And White Light (4:44)
15. With No Expression (5:07)
16. Think Twice (4:43)
These are recordings from the heyday of Underground Radio in San Francisco.=20
This set includes 82 tracks on 6 CDs (most are 80 minute CDs), featuring man=
y=20
live performances, primarily produced and broadcast by radio station KSAN FM=
.=20
Many of the most popular (and a few lesser known) musicians are represented=20
during the key three years when Bay Area psychadelic music was peaking; from=
=20
1966 to 1968. The majority of these recordings came from the Avalon Ballroo=
m=20
and the Fillmore Auditorium, where KSAN often recorded sets and created=20
production reels for local FM transmission. Since the production reels=20
primarily featured edited highlights, theres a consistantly high caliber of=20
performances documented here.
This collection is not, I repeat not, a duplication of the excellent "San=20
Franciscan Nights" compilation. Duplicating that material was, as much as=20
possible, intentionally avoided. However, there are some exceptions. 9 of=20
the 82 tracks in this collection were also included on the SFN compilation.=20
These 9 tracks were repeated here because they were either in different or=20
more complete form, as per KSAN production reels, and/or were of improved=20
quality. Here are those details:
CD#2: COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH:
Thought Dream (now part of an expanded Avalon set)
CD#4: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND
Old Folks Boogie (now part of expanded Avalon set - was mistitled on SFN as=20
"Woe Is Uh Me Bop")
CD#4: BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY
Bye Bye Baby, Women Is Losers, Call On Me, Ball & Chain (1st 3 are Avalon 67=
,=20
not 68 as notated on SFN. Upgraded.)
CD#5: CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
Suzy Q (Upgraded)
CD#5 SANTANA
Treat->drums->Jingo (Upgraded. These were the two Santana tracks not listed=20
on the SFN tracklists.)
Other than those 9 exceptions, the 82 tracks on these CDs are all different=20
recordings than "San Franciscan Nights"
Theres a surprisingly strong continuity when listening to all these bands=20
together. The only set questioned was the Bo Diddley set. It was decided to=
=20
include this because unlike many/most of his contemporaries, he wasn't just=20
regurgitating his hits by the mid-1960s. Check out the spacey modal jamming=20
on "Eastern Thang," and the approach of his band and you'll hear how well it=
=20
fits. (He even has an electric violinist on this 1966 Avalon Ballroom set!=20
If anyone knows or has recollections who backed him around this time, we'd=20
all enjoy hearing about it.)
Although the majority of these recordings came from KSAN production reels,=20
several related non-KSAN recordings are also included.
Thanks to Harvey Lubar and the distribution people of San Franciscan Nights.=
=20
All the people that helped spread that collection around for free directly=20
inspired the start of this project.

Subject: How to record an orchestra - thanks !
Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 17:58:22 +0100
First of all, I would like to thanks all the people who replied to my
previous post about the subject : I got so many
valuable replies that I have something to work on for the next weeks !
To be honest, this will not be my first recording ( I have already taped
small acoustic ensembles in the past) but my
concern was mainly about the size of the orchestra (40 elements).
So here we are : I'll use an initial setup with ORTF configuration, placing
the stand at about 2 meters (6 feet) behind the conductor, with mics at
about 2.5 meters height (8 feet) and mics will point to the last row of
musicians.
Then I'll adjust the set-up looking for the "sweet spot".
For who is interested, my recording rig will be :
* matched pair of OKTAVA MC012
* AKG stereo bar
* Behringer Ultragain MIC2200 microphone preamplifier
* TASCAM DA-P1 DAT recorder
* handmade cables using BELDEN 1192A (Starquad) cable and NEUTRIK XLR
connectors
in parallel to the Tascam I'll run (for my first time !) an Alesis
Masterlink ML9600 HD recorder to test the 24bit/96KHz recording.
The recording will take place at the end of April and, without annoying you
too much, who is interested can ask for a brief description of the results I
am going to get.
Thanks again and happy taping !
