From: Kevin <mace@externalis.com> Subject: Soundcards... Is there a FAQ out there? Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 13:10:35 -0500 I've recently purchased a Sony M1 deck and just got my digi-cable. My plan is to pull my DAT's into my computer via an older SPIDF CO-Ax card. I was working under the general assumption that digital is digital and therefore a transfer from the deck to the PC would be perfect regardless of the hardware involved since it should just be a multitude of 1's and 0's. In conversation with others I'm finding that this might not be the case. Can some one point me in the direction of a resource for this type of material or at least give me the $.05 tour of sound card ins and outs? From: <christopher.j.bailey@us.pwcglobal.com> Subject: Time Warner Cable Box Digi out- Help Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 14:39:24 -0500 Hey Guys, In an attempt to tape Pat Metheny Group on Trio ( a cable station here), I had quite a bit of difficulty getting a signal. The box has coax digi out. I first tried my PCM R300, which has coax in, but couldn't lock on a signal - got an "unlock" message. Ok -you're saying maybe the digi out is broken on the cable box. But I have an old SCMS stripper that was telling me that I was getting a 48 signal out of the box - makes sense to be (as opposed to 44.1). I then tried coax into my DTC-790, to no avail - same error message. Anybody have any ideas? Is this a Sony thing ? From: Lackofdave@aol.com Subject: Taping Policies for 311 and Dashboard Confessional Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 17:27:34 EST Hey all. Through my meager connections I've cleared up a few things about these bands' policies. 311- According to their management and publicist 311 strictly forbids taping of their shows of any kind. Now I saw them on 3/13 and there was no security pat down and i noticed mics on some sbd equipment that didnt look like they belonged to the soundguy. That being said if i had wanted to i could've gotten a decent stealth rig in no problem. Dashboard Confessional - Actually I'm friends with a number of guys in this Vagrant band and Chris' policy is he does not NOT allow taping. Meaning if the venue is cool with it he is cool with it. Meaning no House of Blues etc. Stands and bothering the soundguy arent really encouraged but you can have your gear in the open. Kind of like pavement was. hope that helps. dave

Truly excellent for on stage micing with the omni caps, or up front with the card= s. Stealthing is also very easy with these mics due to their small size. I need to raise money quick to make a deposit to secure a full scholarship to law school so I'm selling a set of Rockford Fosgate Punch Z 10" woofers in boxes. These are beautiful subs that I've been using with my home theater setup. I'm looking to get $150 for the speakers and a 250 watt 2-channel amp, but I'm certainly willing to negotiate. From: SAlpert5@aol.com Subject: Creative Soundblaster EXTIGY (USB Sound Card) re-samples Digital I/O Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 09:34:41 EST After chatting via e-mail with another "Dat-Head" reader who had purchased the Creative Labs Soundblaster Extigy (USB External digital I/O Card), I started asking them questions. Initially, via e-mail (which was posted in DAT-Heads, they had indicated that it was accurate. A telephone call to them said it was accurate at 44.1 but not at 48k since it is apparently not capable of that sample rate. Finally, I faxed them a letter, since the information I was getting from them did not match the information I was learning from the fellow DAT-Head. Their reply (via e-mail) finally confirms that the product is NOT bit-for-bit accurate. Subj: In regards to your fax Date: 3/19/2002 4:51:41 PM Eastern Standard Time From: UnknownSender@UnknownDomain Sender: asharp@clok.creative.com (Alicia Sharp) To: SAlpert5@aol.com Dear Mr. Alpert, Thank you for contacting Creative Labs. I apologize for the confusion you have experienced concerning our SoundBlaster Extigy. The SoundBlaster Extigy cannot be bit-for-bit accurate when transferring digital via SPDIF or optical. The SoundBlaster Extigy must process and then re-sample digital streams. The SoundBlaster Extigy, when used with the software provided, is capable of a 44.1 k sampling rate. While it is possible that a higher end card might process without re-sampling, an exact bit-for-bit accuracy is impossible due to factors such as noise, distortion, the sampling rate, and the fact that there are different formats involved. Again, I apologize for the confusion. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Best Regards, Laurel Recker Creative Labs Customer Service custserv@clok.creative.com Tel: (800) 998-1000 Fax: (405) 624-6780 Note: Please reply to custserv@clok.creative.com and include all previous emails. Thanks! ================ So I ask a question: Has anyone located a digital I/O card that IS bit-for-bit accurate, and can be used with a laptop (USB or FireWire or PCMCIA)and doesn't cost more than $250 or so? If so, please ALSO reply directly to SAlpert5@aol.com since I don't always have the opportunity to read each issue of DAT-Heads. Thanks!
