My digital soundcard is still for sale. Its made by Sek'd, and its called
the Prodif Plus. The Oades use this card and other Sek'd products. Its a
fantastic card for digital (dat > HD) transfers. I've probably done over a
hundred in the last two years, and they sound great. I would be happy to
give anybody a sample if necessary. You can see full specs on the card @
www.sekd.com
I use it for my analog playback as well, and it sounds fantastic. I
don't want to part with this thing....its probably the smartest
computer/music decision I've made in the last few years. BUT, I'm moving to
an Apple setup, so I need to buy an interface for that.
I bought the card for $400 two years ago. The price hasn't come down
since. In fact, Sek'd has it listed for $500. I'm willing to part with it
for
$325, negotiable. If anyone is interested, I also have an Audio Magic
Presto II S/PDIF that I would like to get rid of. It retails for ~$80. I'll
sell the two for $350.
thanks for the space,
P1

hi,
someone posted the following:
FS: Sound professionals CMC-6 Premium Bineural Microphones, including:
- 2 matched omni caps
- 2 matched hyper caps
- Slimline battery pack/mic pre (9v with switchable bass rolloff)
- lavelier clips
To purchase new, the current price is $485 for the items listed above, not
including shipping or tax. I am asking $350 or BO for the whole set. The
mics are in excellent working condition and pr=
oduce extremely consistent recordings. Truly excellent for on stage micing
with the omni caps, or up front with the card=
s. Stealthing is also very easy with these mics due to their small size.
Selling only because I have replaced with new =
full sized gear
ive got the same for sale, but i'm looking for 250.00.
thanks

Thought I'd try here before doing the ebay thing. Got
two mics, they're quite mint. Reason I'm selling them
is they're not matched exactly. One's a db-1/2 hotter.
So, thought I'd upgrade to get a matched pair. I payed
375 for the pair, would like to get that at the least.
These would be great for studio applications. Make me
an offer if interested.
Peace

Got an email update from National Recording Supplies today about:
http://www.tapes.com/cd_dvd_cwlive.htm
Pretty Interesting. Looks like they may have figured out the answer to
recording for longer than 80 min on cd. Now if they go and add some more
digi ins and outs and shrink it then it could be an interesting field
recorgding device. The video capability could be kind of cool & it seems
that a lot of its capabilities are geared towards video.

The show ran 2:25, so bring 90M tapes...
super hot, very funky, and the set closed with a stellar rendition of
ROCKIT. what more could you ask for?

hi everyone. this is my first post to the digest. i am interested in trading
for high quality recordings of just about anything good. i have been
fortunate to this point in that i have been able to get a good number of top
shelf shows and have compiled a fairly ecclectic mix (a total of about 170
titles). i have both common and uncommon recordings. i am not offering or
requesting any specific trades, but instead looking to network a little.
email me for my list. thanks.

this topic comes up every once in a while...i went through this same quest
for info myself twice already, once when i bought the first card i used for
this purpose (a zefiro acoustic ZA2), then later after i decided to replace
it with something else to avoid some problems that card had in my PC
so i'll share of my experience with you & the list...i'm not an expert by
any means..different people may have other views/ideas/etc
you do have to do your OWN research and make your OWN decisions as to what
you'd like to do, especially since things change VERY FAST in the PC world
(and i have not researched soundcards extensively for the past 6-12 months)
the main issue is that not all cards keep the digital stream "pure" (for
lack of a better word); the soundblaster cards are known to resample the
digital input even when you don't want them to...maybe they have some new
models out that corrected this problem (?)
in addition to wanting to be sure to get a card that keeps the signal
"pure", there are cases where you WILL want to do resampling, like if
mastering to CD-R (which uses 44.1kHz), and coming from a DAT source of
48kHz
some cards offer this type of resampling that can be done in hardware on the
card while transferring the data to your PC ("on the fly")...there is also
software that will do this, either on the fly or after the fact...which
method you choose, and even what software you use, gets into a debate about
how well the various chips/software algorithims do the job etc
so here's a great link to check out for some misc. soundcard info:
http://www.digitalexperience.com/cards.html
it explains some things about soundcards & the 2 main different approaches
to use when deciding on what to buy for your PC, and also has a list of a
bunch of cards with their "features"
although some of the info at the link above may be outdated it is still
useful, and has many useful links on it to follow for more info
the 2 basic approaches to deciding on what card to get boils down to whether
you want a jack-of-all-trades soundcard that hopefully does everything well,
including being the Digital Input/Output device, or whether you are willing
to split up the workload & use a cheapo soundcard for the mundane PC sound
tasks (games, driving speakers, etc) and a seperate dedicated DIO card
(that is what i opted for in my system, an el cheapo regular card & a
seperate DIO)
other interesting links to visit about soundcards:
http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/
http://www.pcrecording.com/
http://www.rockpark.com/soundcards/
here a few recommendations on specific cards:
ego-sys waveterminal 2496
http://egosys.net/main.html
http://egosys.net/1-pro/eng/product/wt_2496/wt2496.html
http://www.crmav.com/gear/73/wave_terminal_2496.shtml
i got my ego-sys from bayview pro audio for about $300...i just checked it
nw & they have it for $269
http://bayviewproaudio.com/ProductDetail.asp?Products_Action=Find('ProductID
','ego2496')&Products_Position=FIL%3A++Category+LIKE+%27%2ASound+Cards%2A%27
+AND+Manufacturer+LIKE+%27%2AEGO%2DSYS%2A%27+AND+Platform+LIKE+%27%2AWin%2A%
27ORD%3AABS%3A5KEY%3Aego2496PAR%3A
it has the advantage of being able to do resampling of the digital frequency
on the fly in hardware on the card; you can also do it in software if that
is your preference
i did some tests of each method & my ears could not detect any difference so
i'm letting the card do the work when i need to resample
midiman/m-audio delta dio 2496, dio 2448
http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/dio2496.php
(about $200)
http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/dio2448.php
(about $120)
http://www.pcrecording.com/audiophile.htm (a review)
SEK'D prodif plus
http://www.sekd.com/product_main/pplus_info.htm
(about $400)
zoltrix nightingale
http://www.zoltrix-int.com/products/nightingale.htm
http://pipedreamer.bizland.com/zoltrix/
the zoltrix nightingale is really cheap (around $50) but i read that you
have to do some surgery on it to use it with a coax cable (?)
the links above no longer work unfortunately :-(
maybe someone else can steer you to the updated ones (?)
the 2nd one was a "how to" user type link & very useful
these devices are not "soundcards", but hookup via USB & might do what you
want
http://egosys.net/1-pro/eng/product/u24/u24.html
http://egosys.net/1-pro/eng/product/wt_u2a/wtu2a.html
(about $225)
there are some technical issues with them though, due to the limitations of
USB, i forget the details
btw, bayview pro audio had some of the best prices on digital cards when i
was shopping around,
plus if you buy from them and ASK THEM to also give you samplitude project
software, they will throw it in for you, that software can be used for both
recording and also for resampling if need be
datheads vendor page lists several places to check on soundcard prices
http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/Vendors/
it pays to do comparison price shopping, you might find a bargain...i've had
good luck at bayview (www.bayviewproaudio.com) and sound professionals
(www.soundprofessionals.com), but there are certainly other worthy vendors
out there
good luck,

Subject: NOLA venue help ----- Jazzfest taping ------
Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 16:14:32 -0800 (PST)
I was hoping to find out about the relative
taper-friendliness of the following New Orleans
venues, assuming the band performing is pro-taper.
I'll be there for jazzfest for the first time so I'm
looking to get an idea of what to expect.
House of Blues (and Parrish upstairs)
Howlin Wolf
Tipitina's (both locations)
Saenger & Orpheum Theatres
The Maple Leaf
Riverboat Queen
I'm most concerned about the vibe at the HOB of course.
Also curious if the smaller clubs are cool with onstage
mic placement.
Any local New Orleans advice would be welcome (including
restaurant recommendations!)... feel free to mail me
off list but I imagine a few other dat-heads would find
this venue information useful.
Thanks much.

Subject: ISO: help w/ Speed Correction
Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 22:32:02 -0500
I have 2 shows that need speed correction - both are slightly different
situations.
1) I have a dat (and converted discs) of the cassette master (Sea Level
2/3/80). Apparently towards the end of the show, the cassette deck
experienced some serious problem. The cassette was recording fine, but at
some point near the end of the show, all-at-once, the tape slows and the
sound is very slightly muted. The second speed is slower but consistent
through the remainder of the show.
2) I have a cd of a cassette from a FM broadcast of the B-52's (Athens, GA
'78). The sound is very good, but the entire show sounds a little fast
(B-52's on helium!). It's not scientific, but I also used my guitar and
tuner to compare my tuning with the recording - confirming my speed
suspicions. The slightly faster speed is consistent throughout the recording.
Since neither of these shows is really "in circulation" and both are
'peripheral' bands at best, I thought I would try to fix these. I have
both SF 4.5 and CoolEdit Pro. Can anyone please tell me the best way to
fix these problems (on the PC)? (I recently asked about fixing an early
ABB show, but since the problem varied throughout, it seemed an unlikely
fix and I never made an attempt - hence I am asking again).
Take Care,
Delano

I'm planning to tape Death Cab For Cutie tomorrow night, Thu 21 Mar, at the
Agora. The band allows taping - AUD and/or SBD. But the Agora webpage
states no recording devices allowed.
Anyone know if this policy is enforced?
Any chance I can get full gear and mic stand in?
Or should I expect to stealth?

Subject: 3-mic omni recordings
Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 02:27:45 -0500
ok, so i understand that, in the recording of orchestras, people often use a
spaced omni aray, with the spaced pair as normal, and then a center mic in
the middle, split between the L and R channels. (panned center, via a mixing
board)
what if CSB-type binaural mics were made w/ a third omni capsule in the
middle, at the top of your head? that would fill in the weak spot in the
middle. i know binaural recordings, from a scientific perspective or
whatever, sound real accurate/amazing when played over headphones, etc...
but that doesn't really do us any good here. it just doesn't fit, when
you're recording loud, bass-heavy rock music, played over a mono PA system.
it sounds kinda synthetic, kinda artificial.
plus a capsule at the top of your head would pick up unobstructed,
"cleaner" sound, with more of the high frequencies intact, before they get
absorbed/reflected by your head, or other heads for that matter.
i know one potential difficulty is combining the 3 signals without a
mixer. but couldn't the necessary circuitry be enclosed in a "battery box"
type structure?
could this actually work? has anyone every experimented with this? i
would love to try such a setup- to make it, or if anyone wants to build one
and sell it (Len?)
thanks for the space
