Subject: sony deck questions

hi,
i previosly posted asking if there was a big difference between 48 and
32 k with aud taping. most people said stay with the higher #, which would
always be best when ever possible. the reason i ever considered 32 was to
stay away from 90 m tapes. i tape with an M1, which has no problem with
90's, but my sony dtc-700 that i use to dump to my pc hates them. it has a
lot of trouble, transport wise, especially on rewind with 90's. 60's and
less it appears to handle fine . however, there seems to me more problems,
due to a new discovery.
i taped a show last nite( 44.1) on a 64 minute tape. upon dumping to my
pc, i noticed 3 1-2 sec dropouts around the 10 min mark. playing the tape
back on the M1 i recorded with has no dropouts, so i know its not the tape.
popping a cleaning tape in the deck, and re- dumping reduced the drop outs
to one single one, again at the 10 min mark.
now i need the collective knowledge of the list to decide what to do. i
considering sending the deck to paul plotnick for service, but i wonder it
the sony 700 is worth the investment . i understand the its a pretty weak
deck. i only use it to dump to the pc, and rarely clone tapes. maybe i
should just invest in an optical out set up to use with the M1, and use that
to dump. i can save wear on the M1 buy using the 700 for wind/rewind. i'm
all ears as to what to do. i want to do whats most economical, while not
endangering the health of my M1. fix the deck, get a new deck( ouch!), or
use the M1 to dump.what to do ???
thanks

hi,
taped the above at the bottom line, 3-23-02, early show. mostly great
show. the mahavishnu project was just awesome. the sancious set was uneven.
too many casio type samples and loops, not enough actual keyboard playing
for my tastes, it was pretty spacey. now, on the opener, i missed the end of
the last song. i used a 64 min tape for them, and it ran out. in all the
shows i've ever seen at the bottom line, i never saw an opener get more that
40 min, so i ran out of tape. on the sancious gig, the mic jack was popped
out of my M1 for about 5 minutes, but i think it was the best 5 min, and i'm
really pissed. it was when sancious came out and played lead elec guitar,
and it was sweet. if anyone wants it, let me know. if anyone taped the late
gig, or could supply me with the missing parts of my tape, please contact
me.

I'll be 9th row dead-center for the ABB shows at Chicago Theatre in June. I
haven't been to their shows before so I don't know what to expect as far as
taping is concerned. Will there be a designated tapers section (FOB or
elsewhere)? I heard somewhere that people have put stands up at their seats
before, but above head level? Has anyone taped ABB at Chicago Theatre
before? They played two nights there in August '01 so if anybody that taped
or attended could fill me in, I'd sure appreciate it. Please contact me
offlist. -Thanks

No. Tape at your seat.

It's up to the venue, but yes.

Seth - my reply to Fowler is below. It contains a bit of clarification
regarding stand height and ABB:
----paste---
Last I heard, and last time I taped ABB, the policy was: tape
from your seat with any stand you choose. I've had venues try
and tell me that the band requires head height stands. When
I've told this to representatives of the band, they say "bulllshit;
if the house says that, send them talk to Kirk West for clarification."
When a house refuses to allow taping, you are on your own though.
---end paste---
In other words, if the venue refuses tall stands, then the taper may
be stuck with it - but if the venue claims it is the band's policy, then
it is time to call bullshit.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of the Beacon, where the
manager has claimed that head-height is the maximum (because he says
so, not because the band does); however, stands in the middle of a
section (too far in for him to get to) get taller, and all stands get
taller once the lights go down anyway.

hi datheads
i made two very nice recordings over the weekend.
Friday was Ween at the Sterling, Saturday was Ryan
Adams at the Electric Factory (this guy friggin
rocks). Both sound great. Both run
MK4Vs>SXM2>SBM1(mod)>D100. I would like to find some
of the following: NRBQ that sounds good, The Congos,
Frank Zappa, 80s Tom Waits, some clean classic rock,
or some hard core rap music (that's not commercially
available).
adios

Mr Data; we checked the A.T. 40 archives and found that the hit song
"Popcorn" was perfomed by a group called Hot Butter. The performer's real
name is actually no other than Moog synthesizer player Stan Free. The song
debuted on July 8, 1972 and stayed on the charts for an astonighing 18 weeks;
it peaked at number 9. The B Side was called "At the Movies".
