I'd like to hook up with someone who taped the Saturday evening sets (Nickel Creek and Peter Rowan Reggae, especially) to arrange getting some disks or MP3s. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA - michael ------------------------------ From: Louie Rendek Subject: after a year...Python stopped working? Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 10:48:53 -0500 hey guys/gals, i have been converting DATs with my audio-capable Python DDS drive for 10 months or so now. i have done maybe 100 tapes in that time and have religiously cleaned the heads every 25 hours or so. i run Win2k and had to install the ForceASPI originally to get the drive to pull audio with DAT2WAV. a few weeks ago, i pulled off audio from a batch of maybe 10 tapes and didn't have any problems. last night, i came home from the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey show in Cleveland with a DAT in hand to convert and the drive wouldn't pull the audio. i went back and tried some of the tapes that i had pulled a few weeks ago and they wouldn't work either. i tried to dump and kill the ASPI layer that were present and reinstall with ForceASPI, but that didn't work. i keep getting ASPI read errors with DAT2WAV. i downloaded VDAT for the heck of it and that program simply gives abnormal termination error in Win2k. i went to Win98 (i have a dual boot setup) and receive the same errors. this drive was purchased new from Mashek less than a year ago.....anybody have any suggestions? i have exhausted all of my creative thoughts here..... louie ------------------------------ From: Comnaround@aol.com Subject: NRBQ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 12:04:47 EST They were and I suppose still very anti-taping although it's been a while since I asked. You might want to ask. I would be curious as to what they would have to say about it these days although not surprised if they say no. Their position on taping is quite unfortunate as they are best experienced live. However they are very definitely worth stealthing. They usually only travel with one or two roadies and if you know the guy that runs sound at the club they are playing it's sometimes possible to get a stealth board patch. They do have a wonderful new album out called Atsa My Band and It's available through GDM at www.dead.net. The new CD is completely worth checking out as are all their releases. Let me know how it goes. I have lots to trade and am always looking for any good Q that I do not have. Reply-To: Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 10:28:55 -0700 hi, is there a simple command line resample utility for DOS in circulation? i'm compiling a package of (potentially) essential DOS tools for use with shorten, and this is one widget i don't have in my kit already. GNU code exists, so binaries exist for *nix, beos, et al., but I haven't seen one for DOS/windows. yes, i know that sound forge / cool edit / et al can resample. yes, i know that the ZA2 can resample to 44.1 on the fly, even in DOS mode. these are not the answers to my questions. :-) secondly, is there a listserv for technical discussions about shorten compression techniques and such? thanks pwk _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? "rate" is the suckiest. It essentially drops samples (or multiplies for increased rates) to make it fit. "resample" with the default settings is at least as good as any hardware resampling I've listened to. "polyphase" is supposed to be mathematically superior, but I can't tell a difference between it and "resample" with defaults, and it sucks huge amounts of memory and CPU. If you have a sound engineers ear, you may be able to do some improvements on a case-by-case basis, but "resample" with defaults is pretty damn good. -- Wayne D. The reserved seats are the same ones he gets every year and are prime stealthing spots. Here are details: 2- Four Day Passes $150.00 each Aisle 2 Row 27 seats 66 & 67 One Midnight Jam Ticket $30.00 ( Sold Out BTW) 12 Raffle Tickets also included for cool stuff ( my wife won a Martin Guitar in 2000!) Dirk, I know you scooped these up last year - - Iv'e lost your e-mail addy so bounce me back if you need them. Selling this as a package for cash - e-mail me privately at ccage@aol.com if interested. On a side note: For those of us who got the letter from B. Townes and Claire Bost about cancelling audio taping at Merlefest in the future, it was not so much due to artists fear of us posting up shows on E-Bay or MP3 sites. It had more to do w/ tapers who left mikes up and rigs running during acts that had requested No Taping. Sounds like Del & Ricky complained, Dolly didn't seem to care. I got this from folks who work at MFest - just passing it along. Flame me if makes you feel better. It was a noble 3 year experiment - Oh Well- back to stealth mode! I have a D100 and had similar problems. In the end, it's my belief that the D100 was somewhat out of alignment, very slightly, but out of alignment none the less. So when I would play a tape (recorded on my D100) in my DA20mkII there would be occasional digi-noise but playing back in the D100 was fine. Since the D100 played it fine, I ignored the D100 as the possible cause and assumed it was my DA20mkII. Time went by and eventually tapes from my D100 were to the point of having a few bad spots even when played back on the D100. One suggestion, if you have a tape that you know played fine in both decks, try playing it in both decks now. If it still plays fine in both decks, that's one more reason to be suspect of the M1. Issue 2: Where to go for repair (opinion again): I've had Paul work on my decks and was satisfied with the outcome. When the incident above occurred, I called and received a "haphazard" answer when asked about turnaround timeframe (to the effect of "well our Sony guy is on vacation and is supposed to be back next Monday but we're not sure"). This is by no means a slam against Paul or his business but I needed more of a committed timeframe (shows were coming up). So, I decided to try the Sony "one price fixes all" service. I sent the deck out and had it back in less than 3 weeks and it works GREAT! Tapes recorded since repair play fine in all of my decks. There have been horror stories about this service but I was more than happy. Not to mention that you get a tracking number and can follow it's progress from the time the service center receives it till it's back in your hands, including all stops along the UPS route to your town. It was a bit pricey but for a total of $297 (covers repair, tax & shipping) I have a refurbished deck. Sony claims that they bring it back to factory specs and I assume that they did the same thing(s) to my deck as they do to the refurbs that they sell (sold?) at their outlet centers. Bottom line, I believe either of the mentioned service centers are equally viable alternatives, just ask any important questions before sending off your deck(s). Issue 3: Do you buy a new deck: I also wanted a dedicated deck for my PC but didn't want to spend the money for new. All I can say is look on ebay. Yes, there's some risk involved but I picked up a used DA-302 (Tascam dual well DAT deck) in great shape for $425 which included shipping. There's almost always a great deal on a DAT deck there (dollar wise anyway). Look up DAT and watch all the decks for a week or so, the time will give you a good feel for going prices and so-forth. This could potentially solve you 32k/44.1k/48k dilemma since you could get a deck that would handle 90m tapes. Of course, I've seen some good deals right here too! Issue 4: Is your Sony home deck worth the repair: I have no knowledge of the deck, so I won't even share an opinion. If I were you I would verify that your M1 is not the problem before you sink money into anything else. I would also suggest that you don't use it for transfer as well as recording shows. The DAT deck well is drying up fast so get as much recording mileage out of yours as possible, don't kill a portable with transfers. Hope this helps!
