Mindprint Di-Port & Vector Pocket generator: $280 OBO shipped
Purchased new in 9-02, used 10-15 times. Its a two-channel 24-bit preamp/ADC.
It has an analog line in, monitor out through RCA and headphone jack, DAC
which will lock to any word clock, coax and optical ins/outs. I will also add
a vector pocket generator which will power the di-port for 4-5 hours.

Nakamichi CM-300's: $350 OBO shipped
They come with the card. and omni. caps. Also they come with XLR>XLR cables,
XLR>1/4"mono cables, and a two XLR>1/8" stereo cable. They are in good
cosmetic and excelent working contition. These would make great starter mics
because you only need a deck and can upgrade pre/AD later.
I have all the original boxes and documentation as well as sample CD's.
I am selling the gear to upgrade my rig for Jazzfest.

Hello all-
Just wondering if anyone has recorded at the United Center lately (u2, CSNY,
etc). and what the security conditions are like. My McCartney ticket says "no
cameras or recorders" but so did my Neil Young ticket in Sept 2000. Got in
without even being frisked. Responses from anyone who has taped other Macca
shows on this tour would be appreciated as well.

Subject: checking head hrs on a sony dtc-700
Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 22:24:29 -0500
hi,
i tried the following from silentway.com (
http://www.silentway.com/tips/equip/dtc700.html) website to try to determine
the head hrs on a sony dtc-700 :
===========================
On the Remote Control (model RM-D55A) there is a button which is not
normally accessible. To access it, you must first remove the remote's top
face. Between the "Reset" (counter) button and the "A-B"(repeat) button,
there is a recessed button that is ordinarily covered by the remote's face.
Press this button, followed by certain key sequences, and the following will
show on the deck's display:
Press the secret button, and then these keys:
87#
and the display will show the number of hours on the heads.
Press the secret button, and then these keys:
88#
and the display will show the number of times the deck's door has been
opened.
One reader responded that there was no # button on their RM-D55A, and that
after pressing the secret button once, saw this display, perhaps containing
both the above mentioned bits of info;
FADE PGM NO AMS
0489 H 31 02
===================================
my remote doesnt have the # button. pressing the secret button doesnt give
me anything that looks like the info i want, unless i'm reading it wrong, or
not doing this right. anyone have any clues how to do it, or if it really
works. i'm starting to feel like a schmuck, defacing a perfectly good, and
never before used remote.

Subject: sticky tape mess
Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 00:33:26 -0800
I found an old 3M 1/2-inch tape and I'm trying to find out if it's a rare
live master recording but I'm having trouble playing it. The problem is
it is old and deteriorating and has messed up my Nagra reel-to-reel deck.
I started to thread it into the deck, but when I hit play it wrapped
around the pinch roller! It was a major pain to remove and made the
roller real sticky. I figured I was playing the wrong side, so I flipped
the reel over and rethreaded it. The leader on the tape was only about
1/4 inch long, but the tape part was gummy enough that it stuck to the
take-up reel by itself.
This time it caught on the capstan and broke off. So now there is a
sticky residue on all the moving parts of my Nagra, and I'm afraid that
everything but the power plug needs to be replaced.
Anyhow, I'm not even sure there is even a usable signal on the tape,
because I can't tell whether the oxide is still there. In fact, the tape
is fairly translucent. I have heard that old reels can play better when
baked, but when I tried smoking under these circumstances I just got more
confused.
Any ideas? In case the brand makes a difference, this one is labeled
"3M Scotch Magic Tape" and the box kind of has a green/black/yellow plaid
pattern on it.
Thanks,
John Whitehead <jfw@well.com>

Subject: When to do the 48 to 44.1??
Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 12:09:08 EST
Im thinking of copying the audio off a DVD concert to an HHB-850 CDR. Does
it make sense to put an optical cable between them and have the HHB do the 48
to 44.1 KHz sample conversion? Or should I take the analog out of the DVD and
feed that to the HHB? The reason I ask is because a friend says that he can
hear inferior audio when its converted the digital way. I say he's out of
his mind.
SO what's the best way to get the resample done best?

Subject: Still seeking USB or Firewire Digital I/O Solution For Laptop
Date: Mon, 01 Apr 2002 13:13:46 EST
I am still seeking suggestions for a USB or firewire digital I/O for my laptop, and nobody who has contacted me so far has offered a reasonable solution (except one Dat-head who suggested a "PCMCIA" card from Digigram [VXPocket], but that has a list price of $769.00! Sure, I have seen it for $599, but that is just too much money). Surely there must be a bit-for-bit digital I/O solution out there for under $200 or so.
Incidentally, the cheapest 'solution' is Edirol's UA-1d, which has a list price of only $99, but it is admittedly (by Edirol themselves) NOT bit-for-bit accurate, and furthermore, can output audio from the computer at the 48k sample rate. What's that all about?!
Anybody with suggestions, please e-mail me directly (and post to DAT-heads as well if you wish) since I don't have the opportunity to read each issue. Thanks.
