Have some great OtR to offer in trade. Here's the official info: In case you haven't heard, Karin and Linford will be performing an acoustic set at WFPK in Louisville (KY) tomorrow (Friday, April 5th, 2002) at noon. You can listen live at www.wfpk.org! Or stop by and sit in on a free performance. Here is some more information from the station. WFPK's "Live Lunch" is a free weekly concert series held every Friday at noon in a beautiful performance space at the HSA Broadband Building in downtown Louisville. Louisville musicians and national talent participate. We invite our listeners to attend (the space holds about 70) and bring a bag lunch. The hour-long performance will begin promptly at noon. Over The Rhine will play for about 25 minutes and then our Live Lunch host, Scott Mullins, will do a brief interview segment (usually about 5 minutes). Then the band will play to the top of the hour. This device has been sitting on a shelf ever since. I opened it when it came to my home, but can't really vouch for its abilities. The box says: "USB Audio interface with 24 bit A/D, D/A, & SRC, Windows 98, 2000 & Mac OS compatible." Best offer over the next couple days can have it. Essentially, this was live video/film and audio taped and stored for many years. Fortunately, the tapes were stored in very good enviromental conditions and most were flawlessly transferred to digital for remastering. This archive was named as a national treasure by the Russian government. Hopefully some of our collections will be viewed as national treasures someday. PEACE & BLESSINGS, stuart ------------------------------ From: "Brian Price" Subject: Laptops & Security Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 00:32:13 -0600 I'm looking for feedback from tapers out there who are using Laptops for taping. What have your experiences been with laptops as compared to DAT decks at venue security? I have heard a few stories both ways, but I'm thinking of ditching the deck and going with a laptop based rig, but don't want to find out I have made a bad decision that results in even more hassles at security. Any comments? Thanks Brian ------------------------------ From: Gianni Pavan Subject: Re: emphasis switch on dat machines Date: Fri, 05 Apr 2002 09:00:35 +0200 Pre-emphasis/de-emphasis was often used in the first generation of DAT recorders to highen the SNR at high frequencies. The old CASIO DA1 and DA2 produced tapes with the pre-emphasis always on. Those tapes can be played back on any DAT player because the pre-emphasis bit switches on the de-emphasis circuitry on analog outputs. Problems may arise while transferring those tapes to PC through a digital interface: at the very end the .wav files have the pre-emphasis without any flag telling "hey, my high frequencies are higher than normal!". To do a good job it is required to have a digital I/O board able to show the status of the DAT control bits and then, if the pre-emphasis is on, it is required to manually apply a digital filter to the wav files to restore the original frequency flatness. Some boards are able to switch on and off the control bit, but this does not means the board actually performs the de-emphasis!! Somewhere on my PCs I should have a file with the de-emphasis curve. Ask me privately if you need that kind of info. Trouble with my SV-3800...... Date: Fri, 05 Apr 2002 10:33:16 -0500 I got a Panasonic sv-3800 about 8 months ago, and it's worked great until recently. (I really can't complain, seeing as I stole it for $225!) Lately, when playing a tape, it will run fine for 20 - 40 seconds, and then the "cleaning" light starts flashing. I've stopped it several times & cleaned the head with 3 different head cleaners. It will then run fine for about 50sec - 1 min, then the light flashes again, and if I listen for another minute, I start hearing all kinds of digi noise? ANY IDEAS??? I live in a clean, smoke free house and keep all my tapes in their boxes & rewound to the top.... ALSO, I'm looking for a remote control for a Panasonic SV-3800......anybody got one?????? ------------------------------ From: salpert5@aol.com Subject: EgoSys U2A (and U24) Wavestudio is NOT bit for bit Date: Fri, 05 Apr 2002 14:31:06 -0500 In my quest to buy a "perfect" bit-for-bit digital I/O for my laptop (USB or Firewire), I have posted to DAT-heads several times with questions for fellow DAT-Heads and also posted anything I have learned about suggestions that have come my way. In past posts, I have posted that Edirol acknowledges that NONE of their products are bit-for-bit accurate via the USB. I have also posted that Creative's Soundblaster Extigy is ALSO not bit-for-bit. Most recently, several fellow DAT-heads suggested to look into EgoSys U2A and U24 products, which indeed seemed great for the price (the U24 is 24 bit I/O via the USB, pretty nifty concenpt!) But alas, the reply that I received from EgoSys says the following about the U2A (and I wrote back and received info that the U24 is the same in this regard).... >>>> From: "Stephen Hendricks" To: Sent from the Internet (Details) Hi, Sorry you do not like the sample rate converter. Your signal will be resampled. There are bits lost in the USB transfer. Sorry about the bad news, have a nice day. <<<<<< Well, there you have it. The Egosys also re-samples. The next product that I am going to investigate for consideration is in a totally different price class. But perhaps I just have to bite the bullet and spend the money. That is the Sound Devices USB Pre 1.5, which has digital I/O. On their website (www.sounddevices.com) it implies that it is a direct digital input. I will post to the list and let you all know. The only other suggestion that several DAT-heads have sent to me is the Digigram VXPocket, which is a PC Card. On the one hand it is small, being just a PC Card with a dongle hanging out. On the other hand, it will ONLY work with a laptop (in case you wanted to do something with a desktop computer) and also the list price is (IMHO) overpriced for what you get, even if it is a great and accurate product. If anyone wants to forward some more USB / Firewire sound card ideas to me, please do so directly, as I don't always get to read each issue. Many of you may remember it, but lost the address because of @Home's demise. It's back up, and at http://home.attbi.com/~catalystx/tool_tapers.html For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, my page is a reference for Tool traders of all known recording sources from recent tours. If willing, some tapers have had me post their email/web addresses so others can contact them for 1st gen copies. You don't have to give that information though, I'm primarily interested in the equipment used. So, please let me know if you intend on recording any of Tool's concerts this year or know someone who will be. Also, check out the 2001 list to see if you have any information to add.
