Date: Fri, 05 Apr 2002 16:37:34 -0500 Well it's looks as though I am upgrading some of my taping equipment and I will no longer need my trusty D-8 or my 7-Pin to Coax Digital In/Out Cable. The D-8 has some "typical" issues (the FF, RW thingy) but is still in working condition and has made a slew of wonderful recordings for me. However, the battery sled is no good anymore (why, I'm not sure). But the unit will come with an external D-Cell battery pack that will give you up to 10 hrs. of recording in the field with no problems...so it really isn't an issue. The 7 Pin to Coax is in wonderful condition. I would like to sell them together but will entertain selling them separately. I'd like to get $250 for the deck and $125 for the Digi Cable. So, the first person who can give me cash on delivery (COD) will get the deck, the AC Adapter, the battery pack, and the cable for $375. If so read about how to look at the error rate display and the number of head hours. Could be the heads are worn out. To get the display mode, you hold down mode-reset and the pause button, then use mode to toggle through the different displays. From the old FAQ: {the SV-3800 has more modes than this, though} Panasonic SV-3700 and SV-3900: (1) hold down "mode", "reset", and "pause" (2) release the three buttons simultaneously (3) push "mode" to cycle through the different display modes: (a) Digital interface selected (b) A+B head error rate (displayed on the counter), and SCMS codes (displayed in the PNO area). (c) A head error rate (displayed on the counter), and SCMS codes (displayed in the PNO area). I have gotten some in trade before and never noticed anything weong with them, but I have never used any Sony blanks of any sort myself. Seems like I heard once that some people had problems with the orange hub Sonys, but I don't know if they are still making them the same or not. At a minimum in the short term all I need is 16bit 44.1 digital i/o. I don't need MIDI, mic pre's, analog i/o, or anything more than 2-track 16bit (either optical or coaxial), and would rather not pay for additional features if I don't have to. I gather I have some options from Opcode, Roland, and Digigram, and would appreciate your testimonials on these products or any others. I would definitely consider getting a 24bit stereo interface if I found something proven, compatible, and not too pricey. When, later, this H/D wave file needs to be output via s/pdif to dat or external cdr, you set the emphasis bit on the card. This reinserts the emphasis info into the data stream, but at the same time performs deemphasis on the analogue monitoring signal. There are various ways to maintain or re-balance the emphasis frequency response of recordings: First get a feeling for the pre-emphasis curve frequency response, which can be calculated from the (inelegant but exact) relationship: y = 10log(A/B) where y = dB output at a frequency of f Hz A = 1 + (L x L) B = 1 + (H x H) H = (2 x pi x f x t(H)) L = (2 x pi x f x t(L)) t(H) = high freq. time-const, in sec (= 0.000015) t(L) = low freq. time-const, in sec (= 0.000050) (For de-emphasis, reverse the sign of y.) Even easier is to use the Waves Plugin - Waves Q 10 Paragraphic preset "DAT-CD de/pre-emphasis". If you haven't any fancy soundcards or software to undertake the above, then you need to live with the pre-emphasis but ensure that you insert a pre-emphasis flag whenever you burn from wav to cdr (and thence to dat). The easiest way is to burn via cue files, using CDRwin etc, after having edited the cue file to add the command: FLAGS PRE For correct syntax, this FLAGS command must appear after a TRACK command, but before any INDEX commands.
