hey guys
i just got this wierd email in my junkmail folder. from "oasisbootleg" ,
subject "permission" , size 144k .
i figured maybe it was some big declaration from the band that they welcome
taping, bootlegging or whatever....
i open it, and there's nothing there. no attachment. just blank. and it
was supposedly 144k .
so i'm kinda worried. is this a virus, or some sort of RIAA-worm, or some
sort of "big brother is watching" type-deal? i dunno, but if you get this
email, AVOID IT !
(if i'm being paranoid/retarded, etc - my apologies...)
take care,
rob

Alan Saferstein in #277:
>>..(snip).. Usually my DAT recordings which have pre-emphasis are 48 KHz.
I need to resample these to 44.1 KHz to burn to CD-R. Is it OK to read the
wave into the computer, software sample rate convert it and then just
activate the FLAGS PRE when I burn the CD, not worrying about pre/de while
the file is a wave?..(snip)..Do you suppose they'll stop putting
de-emphasis capability into CD players/D to A converters?....<<
You only need to place a pre-emphasis flag once, at the very end stage when
your burning software is shipping the music out to cdr. Before that, there
is simply nothing inside the structure of that wav file on your H/D which
lets it announce its pre-emphasized condition to the world - or as Gianni
Pavan earlier in this thread aptly put it, "hey, my high frequencies are
higher than normal!".
As an analogy, consider how you airmail a parcel: when you walk up to the
Post Office desk, there is nothing on the outside - or inside, for that
matter - of your wrapped parcel (wav file) which announces its intrinsic
airmail-deservedness (de-emphasis neediness). You have to instruct the
clerk to afix an airmail sticker (cue file tells CDRwin to insert emphasis
code). This sticker then alerts the postal sorters (detection circuitry) to
put the parcel in the airport truck (de-emphasis) rather than in the rail
depot truck.
Regarding the choice between leaving pre-emphasis on your cd's/dats or
"biting the bullet and getting this equalization thing over and done with",
I would leave the pre-emphasis on if I envisaged subsequent copying to be
exclusively outside the pc, i.e digital cloning, dat->dat or stand-alone
cdplayer->dat, since those operations pass on the emphasis bits. I can't
foresee de-emphasis circuitry being removed from cd- and dat-players since
it is cheap to implement and may even be part of some license conditions.
The risks are confined to when the music passes back onto a H/D (sounds
like Snoopy's yearly trip back to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm <g>) - but
there are, alas, many occasions when folks would be wanting to do just
that...unideckers cloning dats; plucking out songs for convenient
compilation cd's; inter-track noise editing etc. This is when vigilance,
and rigorous labeling, is required. If you're squeamish about your
recipients - or yourself, later - being less alert in spotting and
preserving the technical description, then bullet-biting may be more prudent.
There are still a fair number of emphasized commercial cd's in the stores,
often from the classic music catalog recorded between the early 80's and
early 90's. Out of curiosity, I have just used CDRwin's "Table of Contents"
to screen five cd's, grabbed at random: only one had emphasis.

Hello friends, I am looking for a new place to host "NE Open Mic
Night". The previous place did not pan out. I don't think the club
owner was really motivated to help out in promoting the event. There
were also other factors involved such as location etc.
So out with the old and in with new! Any ideas? I have a few places
that I am considering but I am open to hear your ideas. I would like to
find a place that I could grow my promotions potential. Especially
promoting & presenting touring acoustic acts.
Thanks in advance!

I hav been using an Ego Sys U2a for a while now. It is a USB digital
audio device. With Analog and digital, both Coax and Optical in and
out.
I have transferred a fair number of tapes from DAT and Cassette to wav
for burning or converting to shn. It has hardware resampling, and 24
bit A/D converter. I am using it on my home computer, as I don't do any
live taping, and it works flawlessly for DAT or cassette transfers to my
HD.

Hello all!!!!
I have been trying to obtain a copy of VDAT, I emailed "Eddie" but
it's been a week and no response. DAT2WAV doesn't work for me, so
I need a copy of VDAT. I am trying to archive my masters on DVD-R
for trading in full 48khz glory as well as make 48khz shns for
distribution on FurthurNet (where 48khz shns are almost
nonexistant). I am willing to pay the creator of this software
for his work but I can't get him to respond so if anyone has an
alternate email address or has the full version of the program it
would be very helpful. Right now I have one master Glen Phillips
DPA4060->DPA MPS6020-> ModSBM-1 (48khz)->D7 that I am dying to
convert. I am taping Incubus, Big Head Todd, Nickelback, Elvis
Costello, DMB and several orchestral groups all in the next month
and would gladly send DVD-Rs to all that help of any of the
shows. I plan to use the audio at 16/48 2-channel PCM and have
still photos from the concert playing so that it will be playable
on any home DVD player that will play DVD-Rs. Thanks in advance
for the help. Chris
BTW: If anyone needs help flashing a non-audio DDS drive to make
it audio-capable I have just spent about 6 months researching this
and have most solutions available to email; just drop me a line
with what you have and we'll work from there. PEACE, CHRIS

This might invoke a flamewar, but...
I've been using 6V (6.6 actually) with my lead-acid gel-cells for field
recording with my M1 for a while now. There doesn't seem to be any
ill effects. I don't have a service manual, so I'm not sure what the
internal regulator is like, but I don't think 6V is too much for it to
handle. If anything, it may make a bit more heat than with the 4.5 V
supply, but I doubt it's enough to do any damage.
