DDS goes up to 120 meters. Is that last 5 meters really that
significant? (Are other characteristics, such as thickness, different
as well?)

Does anyone have any opinions about this unit? Good? Bad? Good but there's
better...? Im looking for a device that can do 48 to 44.1 on the fly (not
using a computer) and I wonder if I should be considering this box. Anyone?
Anyone?? Bueller? Thanks.

Subject: DAT Drive Info...

I am wondering if anyone can provide me information on the use of a
DAT Drive for converting my tapes. I recently started DAT taping w/ a
D8 (only taped 3 shows), but foresee the need for easy and efficent
way to convert. Is a DAT drive the right way to go? I tape w/ DDS
Sony DG90P tapes. They seem to use a format called Native 2GB. Thus,
I believe I would need a compatable drive. What do people tend to
recommend (please list some models)? What do you all use? Is this
the right way to convert shows?
eBay seems to have some very well priced internal and external DAT
drives, are these a worthwhile considderation?
I would appreicate any advice/assitance via e-mail at the below listed
address. Thank in advance,

hi guys!
i've noticed something goofy going on with my system lately...
while dubbing dats into my computer, i'll sometimes notice dropouts
(as I monitor the DAT via my stereo), but *most* of the time, when I
check on the .wav recorded by my laptop, there will be no gaps...
...is it possible that the laptop has better error correction than
the DAT deck?
any other explanations for this?
thanks!

You have everything you need except software to do the resampling. For
a low cost solution, you might consider N-Track (http://www.ntrack.com).
For something more pricey, consider WaveLab 4 (from Steinberg).
With the 48khz file open in CDWave, you can save it as a 44.1 khz file.
Or, break it up into separate tracks, and then save those smaller files in
44.1 khz format.

Are you running your stereo through your computer or direct from the
dat deck? If through the computer, I'd guess it can't keep up with
both recording to disk and sending audio output, and it gives higher
priority to recording. If directly, I'd guess that there are errors
that can't be corrected (hence the dropout), but some digital signal
(an incorrect one) is sent (because something must be) and that's what
the computer gets. Where there's no gap, is the sound correct? (If
you re-record the same dat, is there the same dropout? Do the .wav
files differ there?)

Hey now,
If there is anyone out there who would kindly do me a B&P of a good CSNY
show I'd really appreciate it. I'm just getting started and don't have
much to trade...am stuck here on Martha's Vineyard and it's tough to
get away..nothing going on here yet but maybe this summer at the Hot Tin
Roof which is supposed to open again.
Thanks,

The D3 heads are toast. Maybe just dirty but more likely done for good.
Give a good cleaning and if the problem still persists, have the drum
assembly replaced.

RE:
My D3 will record merrily, showing levels the entire time. Upon playback,
the tape has varying-length blank spots interspersed with chunks of the
source I recorded. This blankness is not crackles or noise, but 100% signal
loss. This happens whether I am using line in or microphone sources, and
seems to have nothing to do with source material. It happens whether I am
on house current or battery. I do not currently have a 7 pin (should be
here Monday) so I have not tested digital in, but I would like to use my
analog ins as much as possible, so I need to figure this one out.
Any ideas?

Hey folks,
Anybody know an eddress or phone number, or even just a current company
name, where I can reach Alex Chin, late of Australia. I am trying to reach
him.
Also, along the same lines, anybody out there have experience
cleaning/lubricating a Sony 670 home deck? I've got one that has been
sitting for a year, and now it keeps stopping by itself. The tape doesn't
appear to be sticking to the head, as you can see the tape feeding into the
tape housing when the take-up reel intermittantly stops turning. Rather,
the take-up real appears to be the problem...
I would send this in for a once-over, but the repair fund is depleted...
Thanks
Mac
