I bought them new from Sonic Sense in May 2001 for ~$1200. Since then I've babied them during the 20 or so shows I taped with them. Now I'm looking to get $900 for the pair. Make an offer... **If you're buying them as your first pair of mics, I'll throw in my pair of audio magic x-stream cables for good luck.** Thanks for the b/w. Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 16:22:50 -0700 OK, I'm just dreaming here, something like this is many moons away financially, but I was wondering... Has anybody tried the Sound Devices 442 field mixer yet? How are the mic preamps? It seems like this might be just the ticket for mixing a board mix and a pair of mics (provided the mics were close enough that the delay wasn't a problem). Or setting up a Decca tree or other tricks. It sure looks mighty purty :o) ------------------------------ From: "DRider" Subject: FS: SCI AtlantaTapers Tix Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 19:24:04 -0400 Hey Now! That album never appealed to me that much but theres some cool stuff here, including an interesting early instrumental version of I Need A Miracle with Lowell George playing slide guitar (It definitely isn't Bob!). Will take two B&Ps and as many trades as I can handle. Into Jerry/Merle, old Dead, Dylan and open to suggestions. Send a list if interested in trading. If I Had The World To Give ------------------------------ From: Peter King Subject: treasure trove of Widespread masters available FT Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 17:42:19 -0700 (PDT) hi, a friend of mine asked me to post this. if interested, please respond directly to the email address in the body of the mail, not mine. thanks. --- !m! --- I have 160+ Widespread Panic DATs (sorry no list)that I inherited and want to trade for blank CDs of good quality. The shows date from The Inferno, Steamboat Springs CO in 1989 to late 1998 or 1999. Most are boards or really clean auds. The taper was close with the band and usually plugged in. Anyway, if you or anyone else you know might be interested, please let me know. I would trade them for the equivilent value in blank cds (spindles are just fine for a better value)--about 3 per tape (negotiable) It can be a great deal for someone. I also have some Phish and SCI DATs I can add on if interested. I would prefer to trade all at once. First come, first serve! I think I've found one. 20 GB ( = 35 hours) hard drive with analog input that records to wav. Still not sure if I'll need a mic preamp (but I'm assuming I will). Retail is $399 and they ship this month... Anybody know what kind of input this thing expects? Any good reasons why I shouldn't get one? Anybody got a circuit diagram for a simple mic preamp? Just wondering - SWG ------------------------------ >> Good Subject with some heavy issues. This is a great portable CD size'd product with tons of storage, USB DIGITAL AUDIO input & output (very important feature) and can run on internal & external batteries for many hours. Provides quality headphones output & (so-so?)Dual Line level outputs. More interesting is the Nomad DOES HAVE a line input with internal A/D for directly recording to the hard drive, BUT this is with no level controls or (VU) indication(!). Although E-MU processing technology is likely inside as is reflected by at least the excellent sounding headphones output, the quality of the A/D is suspect to be somewhat mediocre for good reasons. That reason is evident in virtually ALL consumer-prosumer video/audio recording products from companies that can ill afford the THREAT OF LITIGATION that ensues if PORTABLE (and most computer products are produced with direct DIGITAL AUDIO (to portable or computer hard disc) RECORDING as turnkey FEATURE. Word has it: IF ANY manufactured product is FOUND JUST ONE STEP BACK from full turnkey HIGH-QUALITY audio digital file disk recording, THE RESPONSIBLE MANUFACTURER/MARKETER IS GOING TO FACE THE 'MUSIC,' or so it now seems. This may be the MAIN REASON there is such A STRUGGLE existing today getting DIGITAL AUDIO INTO ALL OFF-THE-SHELF COMPUTER SYSTEMS WITHOUT SOME SORT OF (i.e., resampling/lossy compression) DEGRADATION. BOTTOM LINE for DAT HEADS: THERE WILL BE NO products available providing nonprofessionals (or even professionals when compact size matters) with small and long running mic/line to digital AUDIO recording ability/ THIS IS NOW A "NO NO." NO manufacturer who sells to USA /Europe (& now maybe Japan) HAS ANY HOPE OF MARKETING THESE DEVICES in the present repressive LEGAL CLIMATE. Of course you could just restrict yourself to ONLY buying LARGE AND POWER HUNGRY full professional gear at the usual full professional prices; and build up 'professional size' muscles carrying this stuff around. Perhaps a more enjoyable task, at least for those who can deal with the technical challenge, is try kludging together a (hopefully stealthable) rig that runs long and works with reasonable recording quality. It is possible with the NOMAD if ONLY the A/D inside is acceptable quality AND you know what the NOMAD's LINE input level (volts or dBv) maximum. Knowing this, then match MIC (output levels)-to-Preamp (input levels)-to-NOMAD LINE (input level maximum). The Line signal levels going (into the NOMAD) need MANUAL ADJUSTMENT & VU INDICATIONS. When you have all this and the quality is satisfactory, then you got a working system to go out recording ANALOG MIC-to-DIGITAL HARD DISK audio. FINALLY A WORD OF CAUTION: BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT MAKING A BUSINESS by selling a TURNKEY ONE-PIECE systems (especially pocket-sized with NO lossy compression like the M1 DAT) to help keep life 'simple & affordable' for yourself. Even Sharp is NOW getting pressured to (mic/line input features) cripple their line of MD recorders (or quit selling then in USA or Europe, maybe Japan also) to NOT PROVIDE THE FULL MANUAL RECORDING MIC/LINE INPUT features (TO LIKE those of the Sony models). I'm guessing the MIC-to-LOSSY COMPRESSION MD DIGITAL recording quality seems TOO GOOD for the big music industry interests. Anyway, this is the only reason I can think to the present scarcity of Sharp MD models recently. Maybe it's a good time for DAT Heads (who stealth) to back up on spares of Sharp MD and Sony DAT portable decks? At least there should be some home/hobby recording interest group representing interests to keeping certain innovating products in the market to meet the demand (this is called good business), without the constant threat of legal action from (the paranoid) big money interests who seem to pressure all manufacturers who produce innovating recording products at reasonable cost. Of course, maybe I'm just imagining the demise of quality portable recording gear and just being a bit anxious for no real reason? Maybe I should just relax while saving up for one of those power-hungry atlas-book-sized solid-RAM (no disk) recorders? Affording just 3-5 thousand with just enough memory (user installed) to record a few hours of equivalent-to-dat quality audio. This seems like a step backwards as compared to (discontinued?) portable decks like the M1. I cannot help but question this situation, seeing this as NOT being practical techno-progress, but more AGENDA that forces the user to pay more for products with increasing limitations. These big new recorders now appearing are being hype marketed within the guise of being technologically new, AND better designed for the purpose the product was intended!? FOR WHAT purpose would that be? AND just what were those intentions again?!? Technology should be one of life's enjoyable, AND ENABLING, progressive elements. Recording technology, as it now applies to DATheads and anyone who does live audio recording (hobby, musician, Pro-Location+), is getting rather DIS-ENABLING with larger size/increased power consumption, shorter recording time decks, and VERY RETRO with more and more schemes to insure LOSSY compression and resampling degradation as STANDARD POLICY. Something's need to be done to turn this situation around. As with most needed changes for the better, RECOGNIZING There's A PROBLEM IS THE FIRST STEP TO 'SOLVATION'!
