Or do I have to >make a copy for myself to listen to it on my SV-3800? Why does the copy >play back on both decks but not the master? I wasn't aware that the SV3800 has 32K LP mode. I know it will playback SP mode 32K, but as far as I know you only have to clone the DAT to your 3800, and the resulting tape will be an SP mode (standard spool speed, versus 1/2 speed as in the LP mode master) 32K DAT. Often my masters and those of others will go near the end of the tape and switch to 32K near the end, due to a recordist wanting to catch all encores, etc on the same tape. If I clone from my D100 to another Sony deck, the resultant tape is LP mode, but if I clone to Tascam or Pioneer, the 32K result is SP mode. When you say "copied the tape" do you mean you cloned it to another Sony deck? Was the clone LP or SP mode? From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Re: DVD Question Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 00:15:15 -0700 I must have bought one of the first TV's made with an S video input, a 1988 Mitsubishi 26" Monitor style. I have been watching it since it was new using the RF input. About a year ago I got a Sony DVD player, and hooked up the old Mitsubishi, which surprised me at having the S-video input, with S-video and audio through my stereo. I knew what I was used to watching and the new DVD player, with the S-video, just blew away anything I had seen on that set before. Some of us do notice the improvement. Keith >We had an Apex AD-600A DVD player connected through an RF video >modulator to a 12 year old Sylvania TV which resulted in an excellent >picture and sound. In an attempt to obtain better picture and sound >quality (DTS) we bought brand new TV's (Sony and JVC) and new DVD >players (Sony and Zenith) and better connections (S-video and component) >neither of the combos of DVD players and TV's resulted in a picture >nearly as good as what we had. Does anyone know what the cause could >be? Sony, and Brands Mart (place of purchase of the new equipment) seem >as baffled as I am. Any info would be appreciated. I'll send a DVD or >DAT or CD to anyone who can help. Most likely, what you're noticing is picture clarity. :) Your 12 year old set won't have nearly the accuracy or clarity of a newer set (especially a Sony). Plus, you're now using component in which has a MUCH sharper picture with much more accurate colors than even S-Video. Your old RF modulator doesn't compare. However, if you've had the old set for 12 years, you're probably used to everything being just a tad fuzzy. Colors are probably more muted and the edges aren't sharp. The newer set probably looks "extra" bright, and almost strident on the edges on screen. At a company I used to work for, we switched out an older gentleman's 32" RCA (which was a piece of junk) for a new Sony XBR (which is a nice TV, even though I'm really not fond of the flat-screen tube sets). He had instructed us to toss the old set. About 2 hours after we made the switch (and had disposed of the old TV), he called back to complain that the new set didn't look "right" and that the picture wasn't as "good" as his old set. It's just a matter of what you're used to. If you normally listen to music on walkman headphones, you'll no doubt be dazzled by hearing that same music from a good set of loudspeakers with midbass clarity and subbass response. I would wager it's the exact same thing in this case. Check it out, and see if that's what it is. Keith

From: Nick Georges <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: re: nomad 3 Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 10:40:17 -0400 Mike W and guySonic were talking about the nomad III resampling. Mike...i would not get your hopes up. No, I have not seen documentation that says for certain, but show me another creative labs product that doesnt resample digital input? There are many devices out there that are much nicer and more "professional" that still resample incoming streams. I think the question will beg "how much do I care if this resamples?", because it certainly is a cool alternative to a DAT deck.
From: "Bob" <bp@gti.net> Subject: HHB Portadiskdrive Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 11:23:29 -0400 Marantz(!) has a microdrive recorder. Microdrive is expected to hit 10GB very, very soon. This IS the future of DAT, IMHO. As with all electronica, the prices will come down to 1/10 at the consumer level within one year. More, with crappy features added within the next two. How you say ? Consumer product lifecycle? Pandering to lemmings? Whatever................ -Bob From: David Carmean <dlc@halibut.com> Subject: Re: RE; HHb Portadiscdrive tempting... But it seems relevant to the recent list discussions of the (lack of?) future of DAT. Maybe it will inspire somebody to make a smaller four or two-channel, non-timecode "prosumer" version. Maybe it will inspire some Linux hackers to start a DIY project. obDATContent: sigh...I've got to take my only rig in to get the alignment fixed today. Right at the start of concert season. Hope I can get it back quickly. At least I live close enough that I can transport it myself and save a few days.

From: "Matt" <matt@mattb.net> Subject: Gear bags? Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 11:04:23 -0600 I just broke the zipper on my trusty old 80's camera bag I had been using to carry around my taping gear. Now I'm shopping for a new one, and I'm wondering what recommendations I'd get from you folks. I use an M1, PS-2, Oktava's in the plastic boxes, and lots of small parts like adaptors, stealth mics, cables and of course tapes. Since I don't have a DA-P1 or similarly sized preamp, those cases I see you all using for that kind of gear probably wouldn't be right for me. I've been looking on eBags.com, and there are some nice camera bags there, like this one: http://www.ebags.com/products/index.cfm?ModelID=7843&bb_id=s99&ProductList_2 0_Link=Details. I'm curious if there is a great source or style of bag I might be overlooking. I want something that is pretty low-key, that doesn't say "Hey, I'm full of expensive stuff - steal me!". I want it padded and compartmentalized so things don't scratch each other in transport or get bumped too hard. What do you guys suggest? Thanks! From: Richard Hammond <rlhammon@netscape.net> Subject: ISO: Help on DAT2WAV errors Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 15:24:49 -0500 I'm wondering if anyone here could lend a hand. I've got an Archive Python 01931-XXX5AC DAT drive (yes, audio firmware and all). I'm having problems getting it to work, but the person I bought it from states that it does (I do trust him, he's on the list here) and they actually have been very willing to help. Problem is the ASPI layer seems to be correctly installed. I've tried the newest drivers from Adaptec, the newest from Microsoft, the ones that come with my Win98 SE disc (installed OS), and the newest ones I could find from the card manufacture (Advansys). Adaptec's ASPI Installation Verification (aspichk.exe) states everything is fine there. In a DOS window I enter: DAT2wav 0:4 waveout (or whatever the command is, either to play or record) No matter what versions of ASPI I use I get the same error in DAT2WAV: Found drive ARCHIVE Python 01931-XXX5AC Setting drive in audio mode: done ASPI request error: 4, sense key: 0x8, asc 0x30, ascq: 0x1 Playing audio track#1 ASPI request error: 4, sense key: 0x8, asc 0x30, ascq: 0x1 read audio block failed When I use SCSIPING this is what I get: Adapter 00 of 02: <ID7> 'ASPI for Windowsw9xasc ' [01h] <ID 1 LUN 0> <05h> 'Plextor CD-ROM PX-20TS 1.02' {00h}[01h][00h][00h] <ID 4 LUN 0> <01h> 'ARCHIVE Python 01931-XXX5ac' {00h}[01h][00h][00h] Adapter 01 of 02: <ID7> 'ASPI for WindowsESDI_506 ' [01h] <ID 0 LUN 0> <05h> 'Sony CD-RW CRX160E 1.0e' {00h}[01h][00h][00h] Am I just wrong in that the command in DAT2WAV shouldn't be 0:4 for the adapter and ID? The error seems like it's trying to read ID4 and not getting finding the drive correctly. I've checked the jumpers on the DAT drive and it is set to ID4, SCSIPING and the SCSI Interrogator, along with my SCSI card all show it on ID4. I've tried with the DAT drive terminated, and without it terminated (with termination on the card, which is ID7). I'm about out of my knowledge extent on SCSI devices... only reason I have a SCSI card is in '94 that's the only way CD-R's came and I had to get one. BTW, I've also tried the demo version of VDAT. It shows the drive on 0:4 as well, but when I go to play the DAT the software crashes and causes a protection fault and shuts down. Any help appreciated, and I'll get you something from my list for your help. Thanks, Rich Hammond
