Hi you folks.
I am a very new recruit to the world of DAT and have very simple needs, so
simple I expect you guys will fall about laughing, but I'd appreciate your
advice.
I conduct a choir. We made a recording on DAT using my Sony TCD D8. There are
about 100 'takes' of various passages from the Assumpta est Maria Mass by
Palestrina.
I want to export the DAT files to my PC and then edit the takes, selecting
the best passages and then assembling them in the right order and adding
tracks so we can burn some CDs.
I bought a Hoontech digital IO card to add to my Creative Live Value
soundcard but can't get any suitable software to access the S/P DIF input for
direct transfer to my PC.
So I've copied the DAT tapes optically to CDR using an audio CD burner I have
- only trouble is it hasn't copied the program numbers so I have 2 files each
over 60 mins long!
I can play that on my PC but I need some software to edit it all.
Can anyone help with some suggestions?
Many thanks.

Old information for those planning to tape, but if you had not, this show
really isn't to be missed. Tickets are dirt cheap and they are all about you
showing up and taping their band:
Carla Bozulich (the Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, Ethyl Meatplow) is playing
Willie
Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" album, backed by the Nels Cline
Singers. On most sets, the Nels Cline Singers open the show with their
extreme 21st Century guitar-powered acid jazz/rock.
All forms of taping are allowed. There shouldn't be any problems
with the venues, but you should find Carla or Nels if there are any
problems passing equipment. Mic stands higher than the venue's
ceilings will be prohibited."
The remainder of the 25 dates and pretty much all the links you will need to
get from your house to the venue are here:
http://carlabozulich.com/shows.html
CARLA BOZULICH & FRIENDS w/THE NELS CLINE SINGERS:
04/21 Chapel Hill, NC @ University of North Carolina (Gerrard Hall)
(That NC date is even a FREE SHOW! Info @ 919-962-1157, just a little late
notice!)
04/22 Athens, GA @ Caledonia Lounge
04/23 Atlanta, GA @ Echo Lounge
04/24 New Orleans, LA @ The Ark Theater
04/26 Austin, TX @ Emo's
04/27 Tucson, AZ @ Solar Culture
05/01 San Francisco, CA @ Cafe Du Nord
05/02 Berkeley, CA @ Tuva Space
The dynamic range of the show runs from quiet acoustic for the softest Red
Headed Stranger pieces and quite loud for the heaviest of the Nels Cline
Singers material. Pretty tough to get a good capture with CSBs but I did my
best in NYC and the result is pretty good. But there were 3 guys filming so I
can't believe there won't be better tapes of that one. Jenny Scheinman was a
guest at that show which really added to the depth, and she probably won't be
on any more of the dates but will be on the album they'll record when the
tour is done.
All that said, I'd like to get many tapes from other dates of this project,
to hear how it sounds as a quartet (without jenny). If you have the time and
a good set of gear, think about going. I'd be happy to pay for your ticket or
reimburse you for the tape. I just wish I could be there instead! Shows like
this don't come around much and you'll be glad you made it. If you taped one
please don't hesitate to share!
Back to Work!

Jonathan-
I'll reply onlist as well, others will probably benefit from this
too....the SV-3800 accepted a digital input signal from the D7 and
successfully cloned the tape. It does appear that the digital signal is the
same, but the tape speed is halved on the D7 but NOT the SV-3800. The
copied tape not only plays back on the SV-3800, but also on the D7 as well
without problems! My question is, will it play back on ALL other DAT decks
as well as my own? I guess the question is now of academic interest, as a
kind soul has offered to resample it for me as part of an offered trade.
I'd just hate to send this out in trade and have it be useless to the
recipient....easier to find out now rather than after the fact, and of
course we all benefit from the exchange of information. As far as loss of
quality, the only difference I notice from the way my tapes usually turn out
is a little less sub-bass response....it still sounds great. This surprised
me, as I thought the lower sampling rate would result in reduced or grainy
high frequency response, but the difference is in the low end.
Thanks again for the posting,
john e. bogus
WOB: I know, I know, it's about time for another BWT, and I haven't posted
any of my masters FT for quite a while.....let me clear my current trades
out, then I'll open the floodgates again with another BWT and masters FT
post.....gotta keep us rock tapers' reputation up, ya know.....

Subject: Same dumb "Best CD-R" question, but this is SERIOUS :)
Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 20:09:46 -0700 (PDT)
Ok, this CD-R question goes out to somebody/anybody who
actually KNOWS something. Someone who knows a lot about
actual research done and what not. I've been trading for
well over two years. I only trade shn's. I used to think
that it was cool to put data (the SHN's) on generics
because, hey, it's data, not audio. but I'm finding I'm
dead wrong. A lot of my really old SHN's on crappy discs
are coming back to bite me in the ass by a few tracks here
and there not extracting, pretty much ruining the show. Now
there is still hope for a lot of them to extract and burn
to fresh discs so my question is...
...WHAT IS A DISC I CAN BUY NOW THAT IS DAMN GAURANTEED TO
LAST A GOOD FIVE YEARS?
Honestly, I'm sorry, but I don't care if you've used Sony's
for the last year and they still work. I'm talking 5 years,
or at least till the point of DVD-R burners being damn
cheap or the terabyte harddrive comes out. I will pay
pretty much anything. I've heard these names before, what
do you know about them?
Klone, Taiyo Yuden, Fuji, Mitsui, Kodak.
Any help would be SO appreciated, and if you can direct me
to some RECENT articles or anything that hits the nail on
the head for what I'm looking for, I may have to send you
some vids or shn's or something. THANKS! :)

I have a copy of a show which was stopped in the midle of the concert while
a member of the band asked a video taper to stop taping. I think that's
clear enough....
On the other hand, I've had no problems in taping these guys - it all
depends on what security is like at the entrance. You've gotta be discrete.
Cheers,
Alisdair
