I have one of these mikes and have found it to be an excellent value.=20
Some caveats:
1. You need to be swift with a soldering iron. It is not a complex
project, but it does require soldering skills. =20
2. The mike requires anexternal power wall work, and I don't mean
"phantom" power similar to other mikes. I did rig up a dual 9 volt
battery system for mine (+/_ 9 VDC)
3. The side and middle level controls are on the mike which makes
things inconvenient when placed some distance from the recording gear
(and you).
4. Parts quality could be better, particularly the connectors. =20
That said, I made lots of fine recordings with this mike. It's
certainly a deal and does the job. I learned a lot using this mike and
have now graduated to a Shure VP-88...a much better mike but in the
$1000 range.

be so inclined as well. Enjoy!

Hi-
Got rejected at the door twice with my deck so I am looking for someone
with better luck/stealthing ability than me who managed to tape this
show to trade me a copy... I also owe a tape to the person who helped me
help out a co-worker by buying her extra tix.
Thanks!

I am not convinced the pcm300 is any better than the 60es, as the r300 is
known to have very weak transports. The transport on the 60es was revised
after the 690/59es etal garbage transports, so is a litle better.
The only dat deck I can really recommend is the r500 - excellent 4 motor
transport + superior error correction

Subject: RR/FF on a dat
Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 13:32:00 EDT
Hi everyone,
I know this has been discussed before, but I still cannot understand what the
reasoning is for FF/RW on a blank dat before using it for recording. I do
understand about the one minute of leader space.
Also, someone said that when FF/RW on a dat machine, the dat heads are
directly touching the tape, because the AT is displayed, and this could harm
the tape itself... is this true? Is there an explanation for this, that can
be explained or described in "children's terms" so that I can better
understand it?
Lastly, is the DAT format in danger? I read an interview with Bear (that GD
guy) in the GD Deadheads tapers compendium (by Getz/Dwork), in which he said
that the music on DAT format was not reliably archived, and that optical (eg,
CDR) digital formats were okay to use. I don't know how much of an expert or
amateur he even is, so I'm not sure if this is something to worry about. But
it was a bit frightening. Therefore any insight would definitely be
appreciated, again anything that can be explained in words that you would use
with a child. I remember a year ago or so where someone mentioned that dat
format could last up to 30 years, and CDR format could last up to 70 years.
Thanks a zillion!

No big deal here. I've just done the exact same thing when I got my Okatavas
to run into my M1. I ordered a pair of low-z to hi-z transformers from Oade.
They sold me Hosa MIT176 Transformers for $20 Each, and a Dual 1/4"
Female-Stereo Mini Adapter for $6.50 to go to the miniplug.
Sounds great.

Hey Folks
I just put my Sony DTC 670 in the mail to Pro Digital, of Broomall PA,
which has a pretty good rep among the professional audio folks I know. I
assume they will do a good job, and the phone estimate was from 125-200,
depending what's needed. "Paul" told me they work on the Sony portables as
well. For reference, he indicated that the heads (full-sized) of Sony home
decks rarely need changing, as they are good for... 5000 hrs. He also said
the portables are usually good for 2500 hrs. This seems a bit high for the
portables, from what I've heard... (Anybody have a comment?...)
They are at:
Pro Digital
700-B Parkway Blvd.
Broomall PA 19008
610-353-2400
What I understood from Sony is that they have a flat-rate of $149, but I
could never get them to tell me what would be included in the repair (i.e.
I couldn't request them to change the head, or even get a number for the
service center where the work would be done). Rather frustrating. I will
try the number below to see where it gets me...
There is also another guy in PA who specializes in DAT decks, but I can't
remember his name at the moment. I think he is in archives here somewhere.

I had a PCM R300 for 3 years or so. I liked it very
much. (Ran it up to close to 200 hrs.) Actually, I
think it is the prodgeny (sp?) of the 60ES. Both are
3 motor decks, and the layout (I think) is very
similar.
Some advantages of the R300 are: easy access to total
hrs and the error counter. Even the big brother R500
doesn't give you that! And ability to choose SCMS.
Also includes SBM, and all the inputs and outputs you
could want (analog, coax dig, opt dig).
The *only* reason why I got rid of it, was that I
wanted to move to a 4 motor deck. Ended up with a
Tascam DA 40. (I thought the R500 sucked because it
lacked the access to total hrs and error counter.
Yeah, you can drill a hole into the remote to expose a
"secret button" and get access to those features, but
that's ridiculous on a pro deck. Sorry, venting...)
For $240, geez, you can't beat that for an R300. :-)

They cost $5.35 each. I have 9 of them still in the original plastic. You

Hmm...they said $216 for my M1. I originally called the place where
I bought it, Leo's Pro Audio in SF/Oakland; the tech I spoke with
the first time said "sure, bring it down, I can usually fix those." The
next day, somebody else there told me that they were not a Sony Authorized
repair shop, that Sony wouldn't sell them parts or schematics. She gave
me an 800 number which eventually led me to Sony Business and Professional
division.
The whole thing sounded rather imprecise to me. They didn't even seem
to want to set up a repair order number before I sent it in.
I'll report back on how it went (hopefully without trouble).

This is my last attempt to find a taper for this Thursday's Voivod show at
Sonic Unyon in Hamilton, ON. IMHO this is probably the most under rated band
from the old school metal scene. Their former singer, Snake, is back in the
fold and this will be a show not to miss. John E. Bogus are you out there?
Make the trip to ON bro you won't be disappointed!
I have an extra tik available and I'm sure we can work something out.

For completeness, my (old) brain does now remember the
following:
R300- total hrs and error counter
R500- total hrs but no error counter
ZA5ES- neither
Never much made sense to me, because the ZA5ES has the
same transport as the R500 (the same loud "clicking"
when changing transport functions, and both machines
run a little hot), but was better built, but didn't
have either the total hrs or error counter (except
through a "modified" remote).
I always took the total hrs feature as useful for
buying used, and the error counter for when to clean
the heads. Error counts go up, use dry cassette
cleaning. Dry cassette cleaning no longer works?
Then needs a (professional) wet cleaning. Or new
heads!

thought I'd keep my eyes open for more of them, only a heck of a lot
cheaper. I found them, and had to buy enough to spread he good deal
