From: "Nic Brokenleg" <nnbroken@sio.midco.net> Subject: FS: Teac/Tascam PE-120s (Nak CM-300s) Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 18:16:01 -0500 Hey gang, The last couple of buyers have backed out on me, so please only express interest if you really are interested! I have a pair of Teac PE-120 microphones for sale. These are identical in every way to Nakamichi CM-300s, they just have the Teac name. They are in *excellent* condition and come with the cardioid and omni caps, four windscreens, two sets of batteries, and a case to hold everything. Hell, I'll even include a pair of 20 foot mic cables for them. All you'll need is some sort of deck! I've had these mics for about two years, and was only able to use them 2 or 3 times. I'm the third owner of these mics, and they've been babied. I'm selling them because I've upgraded to a pair of CM-700s, and need the money. They're just sitting here in storage, waiting for someone to give them a good home! These would be great mics for someone just getting started with taping, as they don't require phantom power. I'd really like to get $400 for these plus shipping, but all reasonable offers will be considered, so feel free to make an offer! Thanks, Nic
From: artood2 <artood2@shaw.ca> Subject: anyone use 120meters - trade offer Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 16:27:33 -0700 I came into a large supply of 120 meter computer back up tapes of course you could use these for audio ... I know some people do ... anyhow they are of little use to me I'd entertain trades for cdrs or dats full or virgin the tapes I have are "one pass" but I'd be willing to give you a good ratio 1-2 per new dat 6-7 per cdr spindle (more or less depending on full or virgin media) these retail for about $15-20 EACH new !! . I also have a non audio (to my knowledge) dds drive to offer email if int

I find these two statements most incongrous. My understanding for the reason to "unpack" (FF/RW) a DAT before recording is to even out or normalize the reel tension. and >Lastly, is the DAT format in danger? I read an interview with Bear (that GD >guy) in the GD Deadheads tapers compendium (by Getz/Dwork), in which he said >that the music on DAT format was not reliably archived, and that optical (eg, >CDR) digital formats were okay to use. I don't know how much of an expert or >amateur he even is, so I'm not sure if this is something to worry about. Bear, Augustus Stanley Owsley, was THE sound guy for the GD for many many years. Definitely not an amateur, but anyone who tries to hypothesize about the true long term durability of todays recording mediums can only be an estimated prophet. It does make sense though that optical 1's and 0's holes burned into a substrate would perhaps have a longevity edge over information stored in magnetic pulses on a thin layer of magnetic material layered on a thin tape and wound on a spool.

From: Tom McGee <tfm@110.net> Subject: Sony DAT repairs Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 21:10:46 -0400 -- The current flat-rate repair price from Sony in Westwood, MA for models TCD-D100 and PCM-MI is $255. They'll fix whatever is necessary for that price. One of my machines got new heads and another got a new display board during the past year. I think the warranty period on the repairs is 90 days. If you're not local (or even if you are) it helps if you give them a complete description of the problem, especially if it's intermittent. If I had been more specific, it would have saved me a callback, but fortunately, I am local to them and checked the machine before leaving the parking lot.

From: "Larry J Abballe" <abballe@sprynet.com> Subject: The Jukebox 3 Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 09:36:47 -0400 Hello all, I've been following the Jukebox 3 posts here and thought you all might find this to be a good read. Tom's Hardware Guide has done a review of the Jukebox 3. In the review he states: "The Jukebox 3 supports direct recording in both WAV and MP3. In WAV format, you have a choice of sampling frequency: 48kHz, 44.1kHz or 32kHz in 16 bits. MP3 encoding is in 64, 128, 192 or 320 kbps at constant output. The Jukebox 3 does not encode in VBR (Variable Bit Rate), but it can read the files." Here's a link to the compete review: http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/02q2/020419/index.html Now, if it's capable of recording at a sampling frequency of your choice @ 48kHz, 44.1kHz or 32kHz, I can not see a reason for it to resample on the input. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't - but it would make absolutely no sense to do so. I suppose we can assume that it doesn't... Larry

I saw them open for John Scofield on 4/19/02 much to my surprise. They blew him off the stage! They also played: April 20- Blacksburg, VA "Baileys" April 21- Floyd, VA "Pine Tavern" April 22- Falls Church, VA "The State Theatre" If anyone taped them, I would be highly interested in working a trade! There only a couple shows left: April 26- Atlanta, GA "Earthshaking Music" This is a music store setting with 2 shows, one at 8:00 and one at 10:00 PM The capacity is limited to 100 people. I know alot of tapers will be at the Vida Blue show, but there needs to be at least one quality DAT rig at these very rare performances. The next and final public appearance for this little tour will be: April 27- Asheville, NC "Stella Blue" You can get more info from Shawn Lane's website: http://www.noproblemhere.com/ Please contact me if you plan on attending these awesome shows. From: Keith Bode <t.tunakebo@verizon.net> Subject: Price correction Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 10:05:08 -0700 Yesterday I posted about having scored some good deals on DAT head cleaning tapes, and offering them to the group for $5 plus $80 postage each. One of oour members was kind enough to point out that I put $80 for mailing them, when it should have been 80 cents each. Also, another member advised me to only wet clean my heads. If anyone has any information on a web site, or instructions on how to wet clean my heads, I am very interested in trying that. If I can build computer's, I should be able to clean a tape head. In any event I still have a few more DAT cleaning tapes, if they are wanted. Sony DG15CL, sealed. Keith
