We are called O-Jo Malone (www.ojomalone.com) and are from Bloomington, IN. This weekend we have a gig on Friday up at Purdue, and we would love it if an AUD taper could make it out. We can help with batteries, cost of your DAT tape, free beer, etc. Drop me a line at this email addy or ojomalone@yahoo.com for more info. our website, www.ojomalone.com has live mp3's, bios, picts, etc. Last night we opened for The Samples, and in the past we opened for Merl Saunders. Eric ------------------------------ From: "Desmond Curran" Subject: mic choice??? Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 12:53:31 -0700 I am looking for a pair of cardoid stealth mics, and was wondering if any of you have experience with the following mics: Core sound stealthy cardoids Sound professionals cmc-4 Sound professionals cmc-8 I have a pair of core sound low cost binaurals I started with, which are mediocre at best, but I wanted something for louder shows that would help cut the audience noie and would not be quite as muddy as my present mics. The interchangalbe elements in the AT mics Sound Professionals sells was kind of attractive (if they sound good). I've allotted about $300 for this. Any suggestions, caveats, etc? Thanks, desmond ------------------------------ From: Matthew V Pfeil Subject: RE: The Jukebox 3 Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 16:20:21 -0400 "I suppose we can assume that it doesn't..." Actually, we can presume it does resample - as all other creative devices do. It's not like Creative has ever put in the description of their products "THE DIGITAL INPUT RESAMPLES ALL DATA". Also, keep in mind there are no levels on this device. So you'll need an external pre or a/d that has quality levels otherwise you'll be guessing all night. I have several 90's dats of James as well as 3 from the past few years, the 2001 one is really crisp with rare songs. Have a couple Saint Etienne 2K shows as well, looking for more. Currently using mitsui/fuji cdr's and fuji dats for clones. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ From: "Jamie Lutch" Subject: dat stability, nomads and wet cleaning Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 14:47:52 -0700 > >Lastly, is the DAT format in danger? I don't know how much of > an expert or > >amateur he even is, so I'm not sure if this is something to worry about. DATs are not stable, optical methods have failed me as well. The ONLY reliable method of digital data storage is checksummed data with redundant backups, period. > Now, if it's capable of recording at a sampling frequency > of your choice @ 48kHz, 44.1kHz or 32kHz, I can not see a > reason for it to resample on the input. However, that > doesn't mean that it doesn't - but it would make absolutely > no sense to do so. I suppose we can assume that it doesn't... Or OTOH you can assume it does, since all other creative products do. Not sure if the motivation to resample is as evil as what leonard proposes, but most likely because its cheaper to resample all inputs then to devise custom solutions for resampling and data passthru. but only testing of the unit will tell, I plan on buying one of these as soon as someone has stock, not in hopes of recording (but if that works, thats great!) but rather to have a portable playback solution for my growing collection of 48K wavs. I do plan on testing its bit accuracy as soon as I get it, and will report her of course! > > Also, another member advised me to only wet clean my heads. If anyone > has any information on a web site, or instructions on how to wet clean > my heads, I am very interested in trying that. If I can build > computer's, I should be able to clean a tape head. from the d8 service manual: "For cleaning of the head, use chamois leather or four folds of cloth(knitted fabric) wetted with a little amount of alcohol and lightly apply it onto the drum. Then rotate the drum counterclockwise (2 to 3 turns) to clean it." from my experience, and discussion with Breeze, a tech at pro digital, the foam swabs from rat shack are fine to use. The tricky part is not to snag the heads with whatever you are using to clean it, as you can knock them out of alignment. Also isopropyl alcohol (98+%) is preferable to rubbing alcohol (~70%) > > In any event I still have a few more DAT cleaning tapes, if they are > wanted. Sony DG15CL, sealed. Ideally, youd only want to wet clean your heads. but when youre in the section, or dont feel like opening up the unit, dry cleaning tapes are mighty handy. FWIW, the service manuals are in the digiphish file section at yahoo groups now. What I excerpted above is about the only useful thing in them, other than how to properly disassemble your d8. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 17:44:07 -0400 I've read that the newer Sony DDS tapes may erode the heads prematurely,.. anyone had any recent instances of sony usage and sudden head replacemnt? I doubt they're as bad as the black wrap maxells though. Seems to me that Fuji are the only remaining 'safe' dds dat tape to use, they also spec out at 5000 passes compared to maxell at 2000 passes & a 30 year life. Fuji tapes also have a higher output than sony or maxell though they tend to 'whiten' the sound compared to the warmer sounding sony's. Sony PDP's seem to be a good choice for those who prefer sony's. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: HotScarletFire@webtv.net (Dead Head) Subject: Netflix Phone # ? Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 18:01:07 -0400 (EDT) With the purchase of just about every new Sony product TV, DVD Player etc, an ad is included for a place called Netflix which advertises monthly DVD rentals for about $20. When you go to their website (netflix.com) a phone number comes up which is virtually un-readable. My D3 needs service. Obviously, it's old, and it's not worth spending much money on, but I'd still like to at least know what is actually wrong with it before I throw it away. The best-case scenario would be that I send it somewhere, they tell me what is wrong with it, and then I decide what to do. If this is free, great, and if not, the less it costs, the better. Please drop me a line and tell me if you know of a place that would provide such a service. Note that programs like Sony's "$250 for any repair" or whatever that deal is aren't that useful to me, as I can buy a used D8 for nearly that. Thanks, DAT-Heads. (9:30 Club) June 20: New York (Roseland / Hammerstein Ballroom) Hopefully people can tape; I'm goaling for the SF show, but I'm confident other DATheads will be there as well. Several of us SFers taped Doves in SF in 2001, and we have loads of Doves UK 1999-2001 gigs for trade. Warning: BRING EARPLUGS. Actually as Klay once said, it's always good to have earplugs, but for Doves, you really do need them! Also, does anyone have tapes of A1 concerts? Er... A1 is a UK boyband, but way better than Backstreet Boys (their "same old brand new you" is an example of their brilliance). So yes I'm coveting some radio sessions or gigs, etc. Trades/bp/etc. No really I'm serious, don't laugh please. Also I've done some b/p, and I'm amazed at how many datheads use NEW padded envelopes for dat trades or b/p. Try to reuse your padded envelopes. I have traded tapes since 1989, and the last time I purchased a padded envelope was in 1990. No seriously, you can reuse padded envelopes, there is no reason to ever purchase a new one when you are doing a trade. This was about 8 months ago. Perhaps things have changed since they closed all of the other repair depots, or perhaps the gentlemen at this particular depot didnt have a clue....
