I have two 4mm Dat/Data storage containers for sale. They are $40.00 each
and cost new $80.00 each. These are what banks, insurance company's or or
whoever stores there magnetic media offsite. I got these when I worked for
Arcus Data Secruity. The boxes hold 80 tapes each and have anti-magnetic
foam and are lockable. These are heavy duty and made of metal. They are not
water tight but meant for hard wear and tear. These are in like new
condition. You can check out the containers at the links below. I use
paypal if you would like to use credit card or monay orders are ok too.
Thanks

That's basically the method you'll probably have to use, but
Shane left out a couple crucial details.
1. After you cut out the silent gaps, you still have to make
sure the file ends on a frame boundary, that is, that it contains
a whole number of frames (a frame being 1/75th of a second, or
588 samples in a 44.1KHz .wav/.aiff file). If the file you burn
to disc doesn't end on a frame boundary, your burning software
will (most likely) fill out the last incomplete frame with silence
- which is exactly how the gap got there in the first place.
You can do the math by hand - most .wav editors display (or
can be configured to display) the total number of samples in
a file. Once you have that number, you can determine if it's
a whole number of frames, or if the last frame is incomplete.
If the last frame is incomplete, you'll have to copy the missing
number of samples from the beginning of the file for the following
song, then repeat the process through the rest of the disc.
2. An alternate method will save you a lot of math and a lot
of manual cutting and pasting. Create a cue sheet from the original
disc (you can have some software do this automatically, but I'm
not familiar with the s/w on the Mac side), then, after extracting
the tracks, and manually deleting the silent gaps, paste them
all together in the proper sequence into one big .wav/.aiff file
and use whatever editor or burning program you have that uses
cue sheets to burn a new copy of the disc using that cue sheet.
The deleted silent gaps won't be long enough to make that original,
slightly offset, cue sheet "wrong" - the broken-frame DAO-gaps
will average 1/150th of a second, so, if you're dealing with
a disc with, say, fifteen tracks, you'll probably be no more
than 1/10th of a second off by the last track. No big deal in
most cases.
3. Depending on what .wav/.aiff editor you're using, it may
be difficult to tell *exactly* where the silent gaps are, even
if you're zoomed in close. If the interval you're looking at
is just very quiet, it may *look* silent, but the samples may
have some non-zero value that just doesn't show up at the resolution
the editor displays. On the Windows side, Goldwave (www.goldwave.com)
automatically displays the value (x,y coordinate style) of the
sample you're floating the mouse-pointer over when you're zoomed
in sufficiently close (that is, when the window contains no more
than a few hundred samples across its width). If you have an
editor for Mac that does this, you can at least tell for sure
that what you're deleting is well and truly *0*.
4. Since you're in the Mac world, I don't know what software
you have available that might contain these other handy functions,
but for Windows, Exact Audio Copy and Feurio are your friends
in this task. EAC can be configured to automatically delete
silence at the beginning and end of extracted-from-CD tracks.
So, if you've got your CD-reader's Read Offset set correctly
and the silent gaps span the track breaks, you can have EAC knock
'em off - though I sometimes have trouble getting this to work
right.
In Feurio, you can configure it to automaticaly *shift* the track
breaks so that they fall on frame boundaries - Feurio automatically
takes whatever number of samples from the beginning of the 'next'
track to fill out an incomplete frame at the end of the 'current'
track it's burning. Once you've burned a correct disc this way,
you can re-extract and you'll have files that end on frame boundaries.
Or if you just wanted the corrected disc, no need to extract.
I'm sure there are other methods I've not thought of, but these
all have worked, verifiably, for me. If somebody knows of Mac
software that has the functions I've mentioned for the Windows
s/w, it'd probably be good to chime in.

I have taped Oasis' set (4 songs, about 20 minutes) at the May Day concert
in Roma.
I taped from my tv stereo broadcats directly on dat.
Unfortunately I can't make dat clones, only copies on CDR or SHN...
I will trade for some good Oasis stuff from 1994-1996 period. Send your
lists.

Hi all,
although I usually don't offer shows with a flake, I make an exception from
the rule here.
Ever thought what happened to one of the supergroups of hard rock/heavy
metal of the late 80s/early 90s?? I'm talking about "White Lion" here, a group
most of you probably know through their ballad "When the children cry" who was
no.1 in almost all western countries back then.Well, the spilt up in 1993 (I
think) and I haven't heard muchg of them ever since..
Now Mike Tramp (lead singer of White Lion back then) was on the road
promoting his solo CD "recovering the wasted years" and I went to see him in an
EXTRA small setting...a bar, not much bigger than my parents living room..sold
out show with a crowd of 130 persons..
Scored a great tape although it was really hard to tape in such a small
venue...one drawback here:Since I had to pretend that I'm also into the music
like the other 129 persons that night (band and roadies were already making fun
of me since I hardly moved during the two hour set and wore my jacket and
baseball hat although it was f***ing hot in there) something got unplugged at
the end of the set, leaving my with about 105 minutes of a great sounding tape
and without the last song (a staggerng 10 minute version of "Born to run")
and an unbelievable speech by one of the smartest and most down to earth rock
stars I've ever seen..After the shows they came down the stage, shaked hands,
singned everything, stood there for every photo you wanted them to pose
for...great, great guys!!
Ok, enough words, thought I'd share the tape anyway since there's not many
hard rock/heavy metal taping folks out there anymore..
04-29-02 Mike Tramp@Eiskeller Ingolstadt 105min A OKM II pro>SBM-1>M1
Setliste Mike Tramp: Falling down, If I ainīt gonna rock, Living on the
edge, Wait not for me, Candle, Mr. Death, Little fighter, If I live tomorrow,
Endless highway, Darkness, Broken heart, Follow your dreams, What I am, Wait,
Better off, Livin' a lie, When the children cry, (Born to run-Farewell to
you-Born to run)
Any folks in Spain:He plays two shows in Barcelone and Madrid may 9th and
may 10th.
09.05.02 Barcelona Mephisto
10.05.02 Madrid Ritmo & Compas
If you get a chance, go and see him..definitely worth the ride, believe me..
Greetings from Munich, Germany and sorry taking up all the space here...

Subject: Do I buy port. DAT now or later?
Date: Sun, 5 May 2002 14:02:50 -0700 (PDT)
Hi I've been recording live local concerts with a simple MD
> Batt. Box > mic setup. Of course, I would one day love
to upgrade out of minidisc. The question is, I know that
DAT is SLOWLY dying. Since I would be very pleased to have
a portable DAT recorder in comparison to my MD, do I buy
one now or do I buy one later? Cause something insided me
says "if DAT is dying, then I should wait till nobody wants
them and dropped prices and used models will be showing up
like crazy".
but I have heard that manufacturing is being ceased, so
maybe there won't be an availability of port. Dat
recorders?
Now also, if I just wait a few years, won't laptop
recording (as well as portable HD recording) be a lot more
mainstream?
What ever you can recommend or any general advice would be
highly helpful. thanks :)

Subject: Grateful Dead Dats Offer - Round 7
Date: Sun, 5 May 2002 16:28:30 -0700
Hi,
This is Round 7 of my Dats for CD blanks offer.
Since 1997 I have traded dats, primarily Grateful Dead. I am converting my
dat collection to cd. This is the 7th batch. I will not break it up into
smaller batches so please don't ask. Round 7 goes to one person. If
someone wants to get a quick start in the GD and related band dat world this
is a great way
to do it.
Dats are Maxell labeled, Maxell unlabeled, or Sony DDS. Some are 60m, some
are 90m. All have printed j-cards with song lists, lineage, etc.. Lineage
is
as it was provided to me at the time of trade. Caveat emptor, these are
great tapes, however, they may have the occasional anomaly. I acquired them
primarily through trades on BUDD, Deadlists and other credible sources...
The following 71 shows reside on 57 dats. I am also including six (6) new,
shrink wrapped Sony DG60P DDS dats.
The total number of dats is 63.
Several shows are filler on tapes. Several of the dats have filler not
listed in this posting.
I'll accept four (4) Taiyo Yuden blanks for each dat. This totals 250 cdr
blanks. The exchange is well below current market prices for new dat blanks
(as
published at various sites, including TTapes.) I will pay postage to ship
the dats to you for
continental US only.
If interested, please use the following in the subject field: Grateful Dead
Dats Offer - Round 7
Thanks.
