Someone else's computer is infected and is "spoofing" your email address into it's dirty work. The infected computer could be anyone who has your address in their address book OR EVEN LOCATED SOMEWHERE ON THEIR COMPUTER. Look up the explanation about this particular virus on Symantec's site... it explains all about how the virus does the "spoofing", and you'll at least understand that your computer is not likely involved, although at first look it appears to be! The ISP tech was right... IF Norton's tool says you are clean, AND your virus definitions were up-to-date when this started, then it isn't your computer doing it. Within a few days, it should all die down. ... This may involve working around some venue policies, especially at the multi-band/stage festivals they will be playing a bunch of this summer, as these often involve non-taping friendly bands and/or general no recording policies. Folks willing/able to catch upcoming LL shows should get in touch with me and I can get them hooked up so these sorts of problems will be eliminated. You can find a regularly updated list of their upcoming shows on my website: http://loslobos.setlist.com/ On a related note, I am constantly searching for any past LL-related recordings - new or old, aud or sbd, digital or analog. Anyone who has any such recordings, please get in touch - I have an extensive collection of LL and other artists to trade. Dan Gale dgale@loslobos.org

From: hudson fowler <hudsonfowler1@yahoo.com> Subject: D8 DC Voltage Range? Date: Wed, 8 May 2002 22:45:34 -0700 (PDT) Does anyone know the maximum supply voltage a D8 will tolerate? I know that it will go into sleep mode at < 4.6v. I want to build a battery sled for my D8 and don't want to risk frying it. I know that it's possible for new 1.5v cells to be a little hot out of the box but enough to risk damage? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! From: Dave C <dlc-dat@halibut.com> Subject: PCM-M1 repair report Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 12:19:54 -0700 As promised...a brief report on the repair of my M1. My complaint when I sent it in was that it sounded like the tape/head alignment had drifted. It took them a couple of days to get around to working on it, and a couple more to ship it; it took eight days in UPS trucks to get back to me :o( Their notes on the work order, labeled "Final Invoice Warranty Receipt": "Constant noise in audio" "Replaced Parts" "Electrical Adjustment" "Mechanical Adjustment" "Functional Check" Was $257 in labor. I had set a $250 N.T.E.; I'm OK with the small amount they went over without calling. They replaced a "limiter" gear which the tech said was part of the loading mechanism. He said it would have caused the unit to repeatedly load/unload. I had no such problems previously. He didn't remember what "Electrical Adjustment" meant in this case-- didn't remember/log exactly what he did. "Mechanical" would have been tape path. (Yup, last tape I made is now unplayable, but earlier tapes are fine.) "Functional check" my eye, though. He screwed up when reassembling it, and the mic limiter slider on the back cover did not engage the switch on the PCB. I had to take the cover off and fix that myself. (If you open yours, note that there is one longer "plastic" screw for the lower-left corner.) I asked him about 90 meter/computer tapes. He said "they're not recommended at all". He said that he almost never sees units in that have been used exclusively with 60 meter/120 minute or less audio-grade tapes. When asked what the specific problems were, he was a little vague, but it sound like more transport problems than head-related trouble. Not very precise answers/statistics. Oh, he thought that Sony was not going to develop any more new DAT products, but hadn't stopped manufactruring the M1, at least. (OK, maybe not so brief...but thorough.) Hell...I forgot to ask him about 6V external supply instead of 4.5....

From: Jason Neely <bondibox@bellsouth.net> Subject: Pitch / Speed question Reply-To: bondibox@bellsouth.net Date: Thu, 09 May 2002 17:22:20 -0400 Recently I got a seed of a show I myself had taped. When comparing the two, I noticed that my copy was significantly (>1%) slower than the other one. I recorded on a TCD-D100 @ 44.1 with an unpacked tape (if that matters) and played back on the same deck. I did a test on the D100 and recorded material does sync up with the original. Unless my recording was the last tape made at the correct speed before it myseteriously slowed down, but from what I understand, there is timestamp information on each recording which should ensure playback at the same speed as the recording. In other words, it's not like a cassette which is susceptable to variations in capstan speed. The other recording info is: lunatec V2 > Tascam DAP1 Transfer: DA20 MKII> WT 2496>SF 4.5 (resample to 44.1)>CDwav>MKW Now really, who am I to question the integrity of this other recording with my little D100, but I thought maybe during the resampling something could have affected the integrity of the signal. Usually resample errors are a lot more obvious than this, but I'm trying to look at every angle here. any ideas? -jas
