Are there horror stories with them, like the old longer tapes, or are people satisified with them. 3 hours would cover pretty much every show I go to, and most shows I could even record the opener. neal

Some people have never had problems with them. Others have had them catch fire and explode, destroying their entire town (well, not really; but they do attribute excessive wear and damage to their decks to the use of 3-hour tapes). Personally, I'd prefer not to use them in decks with 1/2-size heads or weak motors, but have no problems with them in good decks. Seth

From: "Bob Griesel" <sundance@olywa.net> Subject: RE: 3 hour DAT's? Reply-To: <sundance@olywa.net> Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 12:33:10 -0700 I've always used 3 hour (90 meter) tapes in my Tascam DAP1 and DA20. In the Sony M1, I feel more secure when mastering with a 2 hour tape - but I've used an occasional 3 hour. In my computer DDS drive, everything works fine. When you use a 3 hour in a DAT deck, the tape tension will be off by a very small amount. Usually, the tension will still be within the range needed for good tapes. When a deck needs adjustment, the need for adjustment will show up first on 3 hour tapes - while 2 hour tapes will continue to work for a while. This leads to the incorrect conclusion that 3 hour tapes wear the deck out faster and require service more often. Not true. Its just that if you want to use 3 hour tapes in a deck that was intended for 2 hour tapes, you must keep it in a more perfect state of tune. The deck hasn't been harmed in any way, and you haven't changed the amount of time it will run between service for 2 hour tapes. By running 3 hour tapes you narrow the range of correct tension values, therefore the tension will need to be adjusted more often to stay within this narrower range. No big deal, and the cost of more frequent service is more than made up by the lower cost of tapes and the convenience of running more than 2 hours without interruption. The 2 hour vs. 3 hour discussion has been raging for years - There is no shortage of both rational and irrational opinion about it. In the end, each DAT owner does what works for good tapes and a satisfied mind. You can get these at Home Depot for about $1.50. Get the heavy duty plastic; the stuff is nearly bullet proof. You can cut it into smaller pieces if you prefer. They come rolled and pack small and are light weight. I usually put the plactic down, my gear on top and then fold a big flap of clear plastic over my equipment. This keeps it dry on all sides and you can monitor your gear and adjust levels through the clear plastic. You can reach under and change tapes without uncovering your rig. I've done this a dozen times and nothing ever gets wet. I ususally carry more than one roll. One roll can protect a whole group of tapers if everyone is grouped tightly. And having an extra sheet can be very nice to hide under if the rain gets too heavy.

From: Edward Davis <niceguy1222@earthlink.net> Subject: Unique problem need help. Date: Sun, 12 May 2002 01:20:47 -0700 Well, I was taping Promise Ring tonight and encountered a weird problem with the tape and since this is the second time it has occurred I figured I'd post here to see if anyone might be able to explain it for me. First off I am using an M1>Core Sound high End Binaurals. Here is what happened: There are several spots on my tape where it pretty much sounds like the mic connection is coming out. Both channels sound as if they are being unplugged. As a result the sounds drops and comes back repeatedly. The sound goes from the low to high a bunch of times until it finally returns to regular sound. The weird thing is that on my level gauge the levels are unchanged and it appears that the tape is just fine. I figure that if it were a problem with the mics, the levels would be going crazy. However, they remain steady without the slightest change during the entire problem period. After about a minute the problem seems to fix itself and the tape is fine for a while until it happens again without warning. So I am curious, does this sound like a problem with the mice input? If so my deck is under warranty so i will have it fixed. If it sounds like a mic problem I will have to send them in. I just really don't want to waste the time and money sending something in that does not need repairing. Well, any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you are interested in a copy of the tape let me know. Besides the few trouble spots it is an amazing tape. Thanks, Ed -- "You're not going crazy Arthur. You're going sane in a crazy world." They hold 10 CD's per box in special protective sleeves similar to ProSleeves. They call theirs "Safety Sleeve". I bought these 2 months ago. They are clean and like new. I just numbered them. But you can print your own new box covers. Much like printing CD jewel case inserts. The box has two rings that allow the CD sleeves to be removed. These sell for $46 + shipping. I'd like to get $30 + shipping. Check them out at the Univenture web site. Go to the "Unikeeps Disc Wallets", then the "Unikeeps Disc 10". They have a Microsoft Word Template which can be used to print new box covers. The entire box has a thick vinyl sleeve which the new labels can be inserted into. http://www.univenture.com/ Winnie ================================== Winnie Olmer CD Trades: www.sover.net/~who/trades.htm ==================================
