The overwhelming consensus in my non-scientific poll was
to keep dat-heads-request as the Reply-To: on outgoing
digests.
The posting address is included at the bottom of every
digest, so you should be able to figure out where to send
submissions. That information also indicates how you can
get both automated/human assistance with posting problems,
as to do the posting rejection messages. Please try the
suggestions and automation because I am a bit slow with
management tasks right now.
Since the dat-heads-request reply-to goes to an
automated system, I need to double-check that the
response sent back for "I don't understand your
request"... indicates the correct address for posting.
I am hoping in June to initiate some cleanup of the list
management, possibly the digest format itself. If people
have further comments, they are welcome.
Thanks,
Sean

If you're recording very loud sound sources and seeing waveform clipping
below the 0 dB digital level, what you're most likely seeing is mic
pre-amp overload. Add a simple pad (attenuator cable) between the mics
and the mic input, lowering the max level the mic pre-amp will see, and
the problem will go away.
(Also, be sure that you've set the -M1 to the 20 dB/low sensitivity
setting.)
I hope this helped!

So far that seems to be the consensus. As a follow-on question, what does it
take for a mic to recover from pre-amp overload?
On my recording, the lower level clipping continued after I lowered the input
levels. In one instance, after a break and tape change, the recording is fine
with no modification to the settings.
When you say "very loud sound sources", does that just mean recording enough
to make it clip at 0 dB? The shows themselves really aren't that loud, though
I could certainly make them appear loud to the DAT by setting the levels
really high. In both these cases, it seems like the levels are just a little
high and the recording of the entire show is impacted by being somewhat high
up front.
I'm thinking that going back to recording my shows at a lower level will be
the simplest answer. But it's nice to understand how I'm screwing up.
Also, I'm not too knowledgable on engineering and gear and the like. What is
an attenuater cable and where would I get one?

helped :)

I have a Tascam DA20 for sale. It has new heads in it which have less than
one hour of use on them. I have a new Sony R500, so I no longer need the
DA20. There was only one problem that I noticed with this deck, some tapes
would not get perfect 0's on the error rates. There was no diginosie or any
other noise, but the numbers would jump around. This would happen on one out
of every 10 tapes.
I'm selling it as is. The new heads cost over $400. I'll sell the unit for
$300 or best offer. If I get no offers here, it'll hit ebay next week.

I've been trying to figure out what I'd like to try recording with and I
came across alot of downright cheap, large diaphragm mics from several
manufacturers (CAD, Samson, MCA (?)).
Of course they can't be in the same league as the big guys.... I mean, how
much mic are you goin to get for $69. I wonder if perhaps with a few
internal component upgrades, a really nice sounding mic which is nearly
disposable in price can be had/made....
Has anyone here played with any on these mics? (GXL2200, GXL400, C01,
etc..). Are they hopeless, or decent enough to use for concert recording
or home studio use.

Hi, this was posted in a pair of professional audio forums:
by Jay Massengill on May 1 , 2002 at 10:28 am
I've done some testing on a digital recorder that I purchased 10 days ago. I
feel I can now recommend it as a handy digital recorder for back-up and
auxiliary recording duties.
Before anybody scolds me for recommending a consumer-grade device, I do have
a Deva and I'm aware of consumer equipment pitfalls. With that said, this
device is the lowest cost way i've found to record uncompressed 16-bit wav
files at a variety of sampling rates up to 48k. The device is the Creative
Nomad Jukebox, primarily intended for mp3 playback. However, it also makes
very good quality recordings from its line-level stereo mini-jack. The
Jukebox is about the size and weight of a CD Walkman. I purchased mine for
$200 with a 6gig harddrive and there are 10gig and 20gig models also
available.
Soon the Jukebox 3 will be available with a 20gig drive, optical digital
input, double lithium-ion batteries and firewire file transfer. Price should
be around $370.
Initial testing of my Jukebox consisted of recording CD analog output to the
Jukebox analog in. Results were very good.
Next I used a Sound Devices MixPre as the front end and recorded dialog with
a variety of mics. Results were very good. Input gain on the Jukebox is
adjustable on the fly. This test also revealed that both the headphone
output and the dual stereo line outs have a significant delay during
recording loop-through.
Next I simulated a double-system recording using a JVC GY-DV500U camera, the
MixPre and the Jukebox all running on batteries at 48k. Drift was
approximately 1 video frame in 8 minutes. I've since purchased a second
Jukebox and intend to test its drift rate in relation to both the camera and
the first Jukebox.
Long recordings are automatically broken into segments. Operating software
version 2.94 broke the files at 10 minute intervals. I was able to instantly
paste these back together in Sonic Foundry Vegas Audio with no clicks or
pops, even if the break occured in the middle of a word. The latest version
of the software (2.95) is listed as breaking files at 15 minute intervals.
It also lists the ability to break files on the fly by pressing the "skip
forward" button.
When stopping a recording, you have the choice to keep it or immediately
discard it.
I highly recommend downloading (www.nomadworld.com) and flashing the latest
operating software to the device. It's very fast and easy.
The Jukebox allows direct file transfer to and from Mac and Windows
computers by USB. Transfer time for a 16-bit stereo wav at 48k is about 2x
realtime. You can also control playback of the device by computer via its
software interface.
The Jukebox is powered by 4 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries. Recording and
playing back 16-bit wav files is a very heavy drain. Running time is only
about an hour. However, the device does have an external 12-volt input, so
running from an NP-1 or a car battery is also possible.
I havent tested the ability of the harddrive to record perfectly during
movement. All recording was done in a stationary position. I suspect that
you could hand-hold the device and be ok, but I wouldnt try wearing it on
the hip.
I highly recommend this device for a variety of back-up, secondary or
auxiliary recording and playback duties. There's no other way I know of to
do this level of non-linear digital recording in a small self-contained
package for $200. They are so small, inexpensive and easy to use that i'm
still coming up with ways they will be helpful.
