Hi all! I am looking to send this battery system to a good home. It will
power a Sony D-8 for approximately 15hrs. You can read all about it here->
http://www.eco-charge.com/sigma.htm I have used it maybe 20 times. My first
deck was a D-8 and I moved to a P-1 soon after. The battery system has been
sitting in my studio ever since. I am asking $100.00 for the battery, Sony
power cable adapter and the Smart charger. This price includes UPS ground
shipping insured for the full value of the purchase price. Please e-mail me
off list and I will ship ASAP. Thanks!

I just received my MP-2, and I use a Sony M1 which only has a consumer-level
line input, so the following is all theoretical at this point, but...

No, consumer (RCA) is -10dBV, which is about -7.8dBu.

Right, you do *not* want to use an adapter to plug the +4dBu XLR output into
the -10dBV RCA inputs; you'd overdrive the RCA inputs.

Wrong direction.

Signs and units mixed up, but close. When the MP-2's XLR outs are at
+4dBu, the 1/8" "tape out" is at -6dBu or -8.8dBV. So yes, you might
need to run the level knob on the tape deck a little lower.

No such thing! Probably confusing the specification of voltage gain
mic input and the XLR output vs. the "tape out".
> Opinions Please
> Im dying to hear some
Here's what I plan to do, but remember, I *only* have -10dBV
consumer input:
1: Plug the 1/8" "tape out" from the MP-2 into my M1's Line In, and
the line-out to the MP-2 tape return.
2: With mics plugged in and pointing at my stereo speakers playing
white/pink (or FM inter-station) noise, adjust the stereo volume
and/or MP-2 mic gain so that the MP-2 just reads +12dBu on the meter.
(A "pro" would do this with a test oscillator.)
3: Adjust the M-1 input level such that it reads -2dB.
4: Tweak things so that the MP-2 +16dBu light comes on a little before
the "over" indicator on the M1 meter comes on.
5: Tweak the tape return level pots on the MP-2 so that the headphone level
is the same whether I"m listening to the mics or the tape return.
6: Tweak the MP-2 limiter thresholds 'till they kick in just before
the +16dBu light on the MP-2 level meter comes on.
What I just found on the first pass at doing this was that my M1 knob is at
about 6; I'll tape it there with gaffer's tape. So when the MP-2 is showing
+4dBu, my M-1 is showing the recommended -12dBfs. I also found that with
the limiter switched on, I *cannot* overdrive my M1 now :o)
I don't know how good the level meter is on the DA-P1, but it's tiny on the
M1, so a big part of the above procedure was to "calibrate" the MP-2 meter
to the M1; then because the MP-2 meter is so damned BRIGHT I'll probably
cover the LEDs with a layer or two of masking tape.
Hope this helps...
Bottom line: I would recommend that you connect the MP-2 XLR line-out to
your DA-P1 XLR connectors AT LINE LEVEL setting. Then adjust the DA-P1
input level knob like I did above. I think the quality of the MP-2 is
good enough such that any possible degradation because of any extra
circuitry to drive the balanced XLR output is more than made up for
by the robustness of the locking XLR connectors, the reduced chance
for noise pickup with the balanced cables, and the reduced gain required
at the other end (the DA-P1 has to amplify the signal less).

By far the best Apex model to get now is the AD-1500. It's sold for
as low as $65 and has a number of tricks I'll explain later. But
unfortunately, it's been replaced by cheaper models (AD-1200 and
AD-1100) which aren't nearly as good.
In addition to playing DVDs and MP3s, the AD-1500 can play all
forms of VCD and SVCD, including, the so-called CD-DVD format
which records an SVCD at 4X speed and 5Mbps to give true DVD-
quality (for 20 minutes). The AD-1500 is said to work only
marginally with so-called Mini-DVDs, which is the actual DVD
format recorded onto a CD.
I'm pretty sure it will play back PAL discs as NTSC, but I haven't
actually tried this.
In order to defeat macrovision and regional coding, you need an AD-
1500 with a serial number beginning A,B,C, or D. If you find one in
a store you can check this, but it's much harder if you're buying
mail order. With these models, you can "flash" the ROM software
simply by burning a disc with the correct software and loading it
into the slot - no need to dissasemble the machine!
Many people are selling this model on E-bay with the "hack"
already complete, but the bidding process frustrates me. However,
I found one dealer who will sell them "off-ebay" for $100, shipped,
PayPal credit-card price. He sent me a machine that looked like it
was factory packed, but the hack was already in place.
I have no affilliation other than buying a machine from this person;
his email is: disneyshopper@prodigy.net
As always, you can go to www.nerd-out.com/apex
for lots of Apex information. Select discussion groups, then
AD-1000/AD-1500 for more info on this model.

I use a pair of ADK A51TL's with excellent results. While these aren't the
"super-cheap" $200/pair mics, they are a multi-pattern (card, hyper, fig8,
omni) transformerless design that can be found in matched pairs with case,
windscreens and shockmounts for about $850. Compared to a pair of Neumann
TLM170's @ >$3000/pair, which I have used many times before getting the
ADK's, they are quite a bargain. See http://www.adk.cc/ for more info. Let
me also add that Larry Villela, their customer service rep, is one of the
best people I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. He'll go out of his
way to make sure you are satisfied with the mics.

My rig is going to be the following setup Microtech Gefell M210
(hypers)>MP-2>DA-P1 I have the usual XLR>XLR to go from mics to Pre But what
is the best to use w/ the MP-2 to go to the P1 Ive heard conflicting stories
about using the 1/8" Stero>RCA vs going XLR>XLR from the Pre>P1... All this
stuff about the cables carrying more gain and unbalanced vs balanced
cables...
====================================
I used to use a 1/8" split to two RCA's (single Monster Cable) from the
"tape out" of the MP-2 into the two analog in's on my DA-P1. Although I
never had a problem with this cable I didn't like the flimsy connection of
the 1/8" (male) in the MP-2. Last year, someone here on dat-heads suggested
using two separate XLR to RCA cables and I thought, hmmm...why didn't I
think of that?!?! Cruised over to my local Guitar Center the next day and
picked up a pair.

I know the answer to _that_ question! After 28 years (this will
be my 29th)
working staff at the Kerrville Festivals (mostly in theater
security)
I guess I ought to know!
There are as many as six acts appearing each night. Often there
are
"special guest" performers (you never know who might show up on
our stage)
This created all sorts of possibilities for copyright and
management
problems, so the following has been in effect for many years and
remains
in effect this year and for the foreseeable future.
============================
There is no taping of the main stage acts or performers at the
Threadgill
Theatre (in the campgrounds) at any time _except_ by prior
arrangements
with the artist(s). You Will Need To Check In With The Festival
V.I.P.
Desk And Obtain PRESS CREDENTIALS!! The producer can notify
theatre
security by radio who you are, who you are taping, and that you
_do_
have the artist's and the producer's permission. Theatre
security is
trained to look for recording gear, and all bags entering and
inside
the theaters are subject to search.
============================
This applies to audio and video taping, still photography _is_
allowed.
Taping in the campgrounds _is_ allowed. Of course you should
have permission
from the folks being taped.
When these policies have been violated, the parties involved have
been asked
to accompany the security staff out of the theatre, and had their
tapes erased.
I sincerely hope this doesn't cause anyone any difficulty, as the
Kerrville
Festivals have been more fun than anything I've ever done with my
clothes on
for a lot of years. I look forward to many more to come, and I
hope many
of y'all will join us. I also hope no one sees this as a
challenge, but that
all will simply recognize that these artiste make their living
doing this
and the festival staff is dedicated to helping them do so.
Come see us May 23rd through June 9th. Ask for Bob Crockett!
