I am trying to build an optical to coax DFT. I would like to buy the
components to make the equivalent of a C02. Can anyone point me to a vendor,
or a how-to website of someone that has already documented this DIY project.
Thanks,

I've occasionally seen the same behavior; no particular correlation with
brand. Sometimes a tape will play, but not fast wind. I usually try it
in a different deck - sometimes this fixes it, sometimes not. It usually
goes away with several FF/REW cycles, although you often have to be very
patient since the tape will only fast wind a little ways before stopping
so you have to keep hitting the button until it gets to the end. In
extreme cases, I'll just wind the tape by hand - usually once you get
past a tight spot the deck will handle it, although I've hand wound a
few tapes the entire length (takes a LONG time!). Obviously, if it's
a problematic blank, just throw it away.

Hy,
I wonder why so many users in the USA use data DAT-tapes.
Is there any advantage in using them ? And why do many people often have
about that ??

Because the Recording Industry Association of America convinced the US
Govt. to levy huge taxes on *audio* tapes and other recordable
media that essentially double the cost to the consumer. The exact
same media packaged and marketed as "data" media is much less expensive.
So we'd like to know which reports of incompatibility are more RIAA
Stormtrooper Scare Tactics and which are based on sound technical
information/scientific studies.

I sure there has to be something in the archives.......however: Data tapes
usually have a thinner backing. (It depends on the length, and not all
brands of DDS tapes have thinner backing) My SONY D7 & D8 do not have a
problem using data tapes, however my TASCAM DA-P1 gags on them. The holes
on the back side of the tape tell the machine what type of tape it is - I am
not sure where I found the info on what each hole position means. If I find
it, I'll post the info. For safety, I strongly recommend that you stick to
DAT tapes. (I believe that SONY only recommends DAT tapes for their
machines - not Data - DDS - tapes) Cleve Svetlik.

90m tapes are thinner than 60m tapes (they have to be, to fit in the
shell).
60m data tapes and 60m (120 minute) audio tapes are the same
thickness.
The archives should have the meanings of all the holes.
The tax is only $.10/tape (or at least, it was that initially); it's
the quantity sold that cause DDS to be much cheaper than audio.

Hello all,
I am a DAT newbie and I'm facing the task of getting a good deck. I
don't want to spend a million $ on it, but I want some basic things like the
ability of dubbing scms-protected tapes and S/PDIF coax i/o. I have read the
dat-faq and the market posting and although they have a lot of interesting
stuff, they are a bit outdated with respect to the dat market....
So, could anyone recommend a nice deck to start with? I was thinking of a
Sony pcm-r300, a Tascam da-20mkII would have been ok, but at the shop they
just told it is now of out production (Tascam now starts with the
da-40.....too expensive). It seems to me that there are not many choices :-(
Thanks in advance for your help.

Paolo

Well, hey, a little snail mail never hurt anyone........ There`s lots of
traders that use it still. Consider it analog delivery. Real time, that is.
I tried to download a song the other day, it only took about an hour on my

It depends on a lot of things. When I ran Oktava MC-012's, I used XY
almost exclusively (card and hyper regardless of position in the venue).
It seemed to give the best sound to my ears. With Neumann KM-184's, I
find that I like ORTF better than XY for most positions in any venue.
You need to use what you think sounds best with your setup. It just
takes experience.

======================
Welcome to the Joe Bonamassa Update. After several months of compiling names of people who are crazy about Joe, we are finally ready to roll out our first installment of news and information.
Joe is just about finished mixing and mastering the new album, "So, It's Like That." The album is due out August 13th, and it sounds very cool. The guitars are ripping, and Joe is extremely happy with the direction his songs are taking. He is also looking forward to showing them off this Spring and
Summer.
Our website, http://www.jbonamassa.com, is currently being redesigned, but we hope to use it as a means of bringing together Bonamassa fans from all over the world. Check back often.
Before I tell you about the tour, I'd like to thank you all for your support and interest in Joe. This email will be followed by a chance to enter competitions that we have planned for the summer, and an email about joining Joe's team which we hope will help us get the word out about Joe. We look
forward to seeing you when we come through town.
