As a rule of thumb, the better quality mics will sound better
"off-axis" the converse of which is that a cruddy mic sounds better
when it's aimed directly at the source. Neumanns sound great at 110
'cause they sound good off-axis. Oktavas might or might not sound as
good to you as Neumanns would when spread wide.
Of course "It depends!" I have not recorded with hypercards, but it
seems like you're very close to be using that pattern, perhaps you
can convince someone in the 10th-12th rows dead center to trade seats
with you?
4th row is pretty close, or it can be a ways back, if there's a
security barrier, and the band doesn't set up at the foot of the
stage. Are you trying to record stage sound from an orchestra or do
you want a good bit of PA sound? A wider pattern could pick up more
of the PA mix, but if you don't have the capsules aligned
coincidentally (ORTF is near-coincident, but there's 17cm between the
capsule centers) you might hear a "hole" in the middle where sounds
directly in front of you don't pick up. xy 110 might be a cool
compromise, I would run a narrower pattern like 90 degrees back a
little further, where you would want to diminish the amplitude of the
sounds coming from off to your sides. (NOS is 90 degrees with a 30cm
spread)
good luck and write back if you want to. I'm happy to discuss this.
You might check out for reference, Danish Pro Audio's Microphone
University http://www.dpamicrophones.com/uni.htm , and the Oade
Brothers Taping Section. http://www.oade.com/tapers/faq-mic.html as
well.
good luck, and may I also suggest Trial and Error? Maybe switch mic
positions if there's a setbreak, so you can listen back at home and
see which you prefer!

I believe that DDS tape is better quality. See:

With that caveat being that I never use anything
longer than 60 m (120 min) of either... :-)

Subject: RE: DDS Vs. DAT
Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 11:43:56 -0600
When I started taping in 1994, the "conventional wisdom" was that
not only were DDS tapes much cheaper, but they were actually of higher
quality as well (or at least were subjected to more rigorous error
specifications). I believe that Terrapin Tapes even sent me literature from
DAT manufacturers explaining/backing up this claim. Has this changed?
Ive never bought an "audio grade" DAT in my life, and none of my
DAT players (DTR 80P, D7, M1, DAP1, DA20MKII) have ever had a problem with
them (AFAIK). Ive recently remasted some of my original KAO DDS tapes, and
even after eight years they're totally fine.
I have learned to stay away from the DDS Maxells--even my DA 20
MKII chokes on them.

Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 19:13:19 GMT
Hi all,
i request some of your expert advice for my next DAT purchase. I am currently in the market for a home deck and have heard good things about the sony PCM decks. What i am wondering is what the difference is between the R500? also, should i be looking at non-sony decks like tascam or panasonic? i will be using it for DAT>CD transfers, DAT cloning (with my PCM-M1 portable) and making/mastering DATs from old master analog cassettes for a local band. Any and all help with this big purchase would be greatly appreciated, also if anyone has a good deck with low hours on it that they are looking to get rid of, please let me know!
Thanks in advance
Ben
WOB tax: ill take a couple B/P's for Strangefolk 4/5/02 at the irving plaza in NYC on CD or Patchen and Glock (of SF) acoustic at Libby's in Durham 5/22/02, both are DSBD master recordings

With the 'Ooo's USA 2002 tour due to startup in about a month and me looking
to collect "audio souveniers" of the upcoming tour, i've decided to try &
get organized in advance.
I plan on taping 2 shows on the tour, camden and hershey (with luck).
I'd like to hear from other people also planning on taping the shows, so
that we can network together & try to get all of the dates covered for
purposes of free trading & zeroing in on the *best* sounding ones for our
collections.
I've created a simple spreadsheet to keep track of things, & would like to
get at least 2 people lined up for each show.
If you are a WHOtaper and you'd like to join my "project", send me an email
with the subject of "JOIN TOGETHER PROJECT" and include the following info:
*Name + Email (include webpage for tradelist if you want!):
*Shows you hope to be taping (date, location):
*Deck info (type, make, model):
*Mic info (type, make, model):
For example, my own info is....
Name + Email:
jon + slipkid@voicenet.com + http://www.users.voicenet.com/~slipkid/
Shows you hope to be taping:
Camden 7/27/02 and Hershey 7/29/02
Deck info:
DAT Sony M1
Mic info:
Sonic Studio DSM6s/L
As the tour gets started, i hope to get updated info from everyone as to how
things turned out, hopefully setup some trades of the new shows etc.
I will store the spreadsheet with the info on the web where participants can
keep abreast of what's going on & discuss the various shows etc.
Again, the main purpose of the project is to network some *tapers* of the
upcoming tour so that we can swap & get to pick what look like the most
attractive sources for us according to our tastes.
For those interested in setting up trades but are not taping any shows, just
stay tuned to the various trade forums (like WHOBOOTS) & as things start to
surface, hopefully folks will setup trades/trees/weeds/etc as things
get rolling.
cheers,
- jon -

Subject: RE: which mic pattern would you use???

Hudson,
Several factors come to mind.....
Are there any height restrictions / limitations or can you hoist your mics
as high as you want?
Will there be monitors on the stage or will everything be coming from the
PA?
Does the band have vocals?
Do you have good windscreens and/or will wind be an issue?
What about rain or the use of an umbrella?
Your post lacks some of the specific info needed to answer this completely,
but here are some things to consider. When running that close to the stage,
you may miss out on some of the vocal presence in the mix. That may not be
an issue.....
If it's windy and you go w/ an ORTF pattern you may pickup more wind than
you want, depending on your windscreen situation.
If there are no stage monitors, you will have no choice but to go for the
stacks. If there are stage monitors and vocals, you may want to go right
inside the stacks and/or not go very wide at all.
If you know more about the setup than you have posted, I would be happy to
help FURTHUR. Otherwise, take all the normal precautions for outdoor taping
and feel out the situation. Security may play a factor as well.......
Hope this helps!

4th row, center...outside...yup, omnis.
or
i'd be conservative and run cards ortf (real ortf, 110deg)
I'd leave the hypers at home.
if that is all you have to work with, then maybe XY at a wider angle or NOS.

Nice deck! Works great, I only used this unit for cloning, and I recently picked up a new Tascam DA-302 dual deck.....which I TOTALLY fell in love with. The sv-3800 is almost perfect in appearance, as it has been well taken care of. It comes with a remote & manual. I like this sweet pro deck, but now have 4 DAT decks, and really don't need them all. I will ship it (insured) anywhere in the U.S.A. for $475.00. DON'T MISS OUT THIS BEAUTY! I am more easily reached at nutball67@hotmail.com but also use this ^ email a quite a bit, too.
