Subject: DAT Drives or Decks?
Date: Mon, 03 Jun 2002 10:23:42 -0400
I'm just wondering if getting a DAT drive for my computer would be a more
logical choice than a deck for my stereo system. If I get a computer based
deck (like the SGI) wouldn't I be able to pull my audio straight from it
without the resampling issues normally associated with pulling into a sound
card?
Can anyone point me toward the options for PC decks and what software I
would need to consider?
Thanks,
Kevin

For what its worth, I did a search on "aaacamera.com bait" to see what
people said about them and there is a lot of negative feedback, plus
a mention of BBB Unsatisfactory rating. Beware.

Hello
Recently I read this at a microphones reviews page
"I made the experience that wearing in your ear it is
better to let the front side of the capsule point
inside, that means that the sound wave reaches the
back of the capsule first."
This means pointing them towards your ear right?
Anyone with their OKM´s have tested, done this?
results?
Any info appreciated

Subject: Re: De-emphasis Freeware?
Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 14:05:58 -0700
There appears to be some confusion.
1) Pre-emphasis has nothing to do with LP mode. Two completely
different things. SoX (a free package for Linux) can remove
pre-emphasis by doing a digital equalization on it.
2) LP mode is a non linear digital mapping from the conventional
linear digital PCM encoding. It's only used for storage and not
for transmission of data.
In all of this, the important question is how the recording is
transferred from the DAT to your computer?
If you are using an analog connection, both emphasis and LP mode
issues have already been taken care of. (Of course, there may be some
degradation in the quality of the signal, but that's a common problem
with any analog transfer.)
If you are using a digital connection (coax or optical), the playback
deck should automatically translate LP mode into regular PCM data, so
you'd only need to deal with emphasis. You'll need to make sure that
the card in your computer senses emphasis and handles it correctly, or
manually figure out which tapes have emphasis and apply a correction
to the data files. This also applies for USB digital audio systems.
If you are using something else, like a DDS DAT, you'll need to deal
with both emphasis and LP mode in the software used for the DDS
drive.
I hope this information helps. Good luck!

Hi,
I was wondering if someone on this fine list can point me to how I can
subscribe to a CDR / CD burning list.
Better yet, if someone who uses Feurio! to burn their discs from SHNs can
tell me why every time I try to burn a disc that is close to 80 minutes, it
flakes out. Everything else burns fine, just the discs that run close to 80
minutes (by a minute or two). And yes, I am using 80 minute CDRs and yes,
my setting is set to 80 minutes on the software.

You won't find any such thing. You might have conductive foam that has
some electrostatic shielding, but to keep out pure magnetic flux you need
*lots* of ferrous metal or somewhat less but more expensive "mu-metal".

When you're recording at the level of the crowd, it's critical to get good
mic placement. Often you have to balance your desire to be in the "sweet
spot" with an assessment of the crowd itself. I've had both good and bad
experiences. I often look for a spot within the venue where I can moderate
the amount of crowd noise that I will record. I may try to get as close as
possible (got to get there early) to the stage so that I can effectively
have no one in front of me. Other times I might look for a spot where
there is an obstruction like a pole where I can raise my mics a little
higher than the crowd. At worst I get a bunch of friends with me and tell
them to make no noise. I've found that if you can get roughly a six foot
radius between the big sources of noise and your mics, you can get moderate
crowd noise that sounds reasonable.
Also, mic selection is critical. You should look toward cardiods or
hypercardiods instead of omnis in this situation. With an omni you have to
worry not only about what's in front of you, but also what's behind you. I
saw one article online that suggested you should pick a mic not by the what
the pattern picks up, but by what it doesn't. Cardiods and hypercardiods
allow you to do that. I suppose you could also choose a shotgun mic, but
there are some frequency response issues with these that you might have to
address.
I've recorded several times in these kind of conditions, and I find that
careful mic placement and positioning is critical to a successful recording.
