Highlight the loud applause and turn the volume down! I find the best way is to make a "smile curve" with the Transform>Amplitude>Envelope feature in Cool Edit/Pro. With this feature you can draw the exact curve you want for the volume change: turn it down quicly when the applause starts, and turn it back up more slowly. Also, you can easily make the applause even softer than the show if you like! Simply using a compresser/limiter will still leave the applause *sounding* a lot louder than the show, but of course it will help reduce clipping. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: Re: Loading LP tapes into the computer Reply-to: gdavisloop@earthlink.net Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 01:40:02 -0700 If you have a stand-alone CD recorder with sample-rate-converter, just burn a disc of the LP DAT and then rip it into the computer... this is (IMHO) the easiest way to load any DAT tape into the computer. No tricky soundcard or USB device to configure, and you don't tie up your computer with a real-time transfer (reading the CD in can take just a few minutes, and allows you to multi-task while it's reading). Coincidentally, the DAT Store still has stand-alone PRO burners from $294... (sorry to make this an ad ;-) --Gary ------------------------------ From: Brian Gemborys Subject: ISO: Dat labeleing program Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 03:34:18 -0700 (PDT) I like wintaper. Do I -have- to use the same deck to upack and record? Would I lose any benefits by doing the D5/M1 trick described above? - Vince _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "Bob Silver" Subject: ISO- Queen Mum's anniversary Party Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 08:38:45 -0400 Any of you folk across the pond get any live action the other day from the Queens massive 50th anniversary Party, I would love to hear some of the acts such as Ozzy, Clapton, "Queen", and the such...... There's no reason to use the same deck, but you can lose the benefits of unpacking if there's too much time (especially with a lot of temperature change) in between unpacking and recording. Seth ------------------------------ From: "Vince Horst" Subject: Mic selection and crowd noise - DPA 4061s Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 09:08:50 -0500 From thread: "Re: compressor/limiter for field recording?" [snip] >Also, mic selection is critical. You should look toward cardiods or >hypercardiods instead of omnis in this situation. With an omni you have to >worry not only about what's in front of you, but also what's behind you. [snip] I agree that omnis tend to give poorer results when recording in the middle of a crowd. That having been said, I've noticed a peculiar effect with my DPA 4061 omnis. It seems that no matter how packed in the middle of the crowd I am, the recording turns out sounding like the mics were 5 feet above the crowd. Ie: the crowd noise isn't bad at all. At one of the concerts that I stealthed, I remember in particular that there was a loud a$$h0l3 both in front and behind me. I was worried that the recording would be ruined but to my surprise those two idiots' voices were only marginally louder than the rest of the crowd. Whenever I've been in that same situation with either CSBs or Sonics I got huge clipping problems. Anyone have a reasonable explanation for this? I thought it was an interesting point to share. - Vince _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "bob siegl" Subject: NO TREND Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 12:13:20 -0400 After listening to my No Trend scratchy record to CD last week, it occured to me that maybe ONE of you may have either been disturbed enough to tape these guys, or opportunistic enough to scoop up a copy of a show when you had the chance. I realize if a show exists, it may sound pretty bad, but i'd like to get one if possible. I've got lots of non-no trend trades. adios bob _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "Tatina, Bill" Subject: http://www.jbonamassa.com/Unbroken/ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 10:12:36 -0600 http://www.jbonamassa.com/Unbroken/ ------------------------------ From: "Tatina, Bill" Subject: more sneak preveiw Joe B Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 10:15:46 -0600 http://www.jbonamassa.com/SoItsLikeThat/ ------------------------------ From: "Peter S. Rand" Subject: Question about IR control of DAT Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 13:01:59 -0400 Question to the list ... I'm trying to build a DAT recording system that can be programmed to run autonomously. I had the idea of getting a SONY DAT (D7/D8/D100) and control it with one of those new SONY unified remotes (RM-AV3000) that has timer capabilities. I need to figure out a way to connect an IR receiver on the DAT through the 7 pin connector. Heiko Purnhagen tells me that there is a SONY "breakout box" that has a 7 pin connector on one side, and an optical/coax + IR receiver on the other. Apparently these are no longer available? I routed around the web today, but couldn't find anything. Could someone help me out? I am NOT an electrical engineer, so I was hoping to get something off the shelf, if possible. Thanks in advance for help! Pete ------------------------------ From: Kevin Brown Subject: Re: DAT/DDS tapes... Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 10:02:09 -0700 (PDT) >>> I have been reading recent reports about Sony DAT/DDS tapes and that they were down the heads more so than other brands... <<< I use Sony audio DAT (less often) *and* DDS tapes (much more often) 90% of the time. On a Sony R300 and now a Tascam DA-40. Never had a problem with them. I think one of the concerns with 90 meter tape, is that it has to be thinner, so it can stretch or break more often than shorter lengths. (Maybe "sheds" particles more too?) I personally use 60 m and less exclusively. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
