I find the >> best way is to make a "smile curve" with the Transform>>Amplitude>Envelope feature in Cool Edit/Pro. With this outch! this is really bad advice, unless the applause and the music are totally separate. to lower the volume of the clapping you may&must NOT adjust the *volume* but the *dynamics* of the stretches of applause during music. this will lower louder signals ( the claps) while preserving the lower portions (the music). cooledit lets you do this with the Transform>>Amplitude>Dynamics Processing command. take your time to find the right values and you'll get perfect results! the basic procedure would be to find a good breakoff point and a good angle by which to lower the dynamic profile. (which is the diagonal line going from the lower left to the upper right of the diagram.. the breakoff point would be above the music volume and you have to lower the right rest of the line by some angle) for this to work the claps indeed should be the loudest signals of the portion of your recording you want to correct. hth :):):) Thomas mailto:TaWulf@wulfware.de

From: wilkinsmd@attbi.com Subject: Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum? Date: Thu, 06 Jun 2002 13:16:21 +0000 Wondering if anyone has used any of the new Audigy or Extigy boards from Creative Labs for DAT transfer? The one I'm looking at is the Audigy Platinum which supposedly has bidirectional digital interfaces. Creative doesn't have a very good reputation in this area, at one point their cards automatically resampled everything to 48KHz, or allowed digital in but not out, etc. The price seems reasonable and the potential for combining computer sound with digital I/O onto one card is alluring. Just wondering if they've gotten their act together in this area with these new boards. If anyone tried or has one would you mind dropping me a line with the details of what it can or can't do and how well it did or didn't work (including the OS you used). Thanks for any info! Mark
From: "Ragan Todd" <rhinelander2130@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: Question about IR control of DAT Date: Thu, 06 Jun 2002 14:06:15 +0000 The Sony breakout box you mention is the RM-D100K. I have one that I use to connect my M1 to my standalone burner. It's AC powered, so it's not much in demand among tapers. I've never used the IR/timer functions so I can't comment on how well they work. I bought mine a year ago from Oade ($175), and it is still listed on the B & H Photo web site, but out of stock. Maybe one of the vendors on the list still has one. Ragan _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

From: "Joe Sweetser" <sweets@rootgroup.com> Subject: Cable question Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 10:02:38 -0600 Here's my setup: Oktava MC012> Denecke PS-2>=3D20 Denecke AD-20> DA-P1 I brought this to Red Rocks last Monday for Trey. Worked great, but it was wet, wet, wet. Decided to bring my D8 on Tuesday for (primarily) space considerations. Hooked everything up the same, but got no digi signal into the D8. Got a digi feed from another taper with no problem, but my mics would not work. Checked everything out at home yesterday, since I figured I had fried something Monday. But it all worked into the DA-P1 and not into the D8. This was the first time I had tried my rig with the D8, since my D8 had a tape inside that it would not let go of for a few months. I just fixed that problem last week. I have the Oade cable for my D8. Is this an active/passive cable issue? Can anyone shed any (blue) light on this for me? ADVthanksANCE, joe sweets@rootgroup.com

Thanks, > > Henry Hart [CC'd to Dat-Heads for their perspective] I've heard a lot of rhetoric about the clock-lock stuff, but I've never fully understood what that means. Since S/PDIF is a serial protocol and only uses a signal and ground connection I suppose it can only be asynchronous (clock locks onto highs and lows of the incoming signal and uses framing bits to synchronize. A synchronous signal by contrast uses a clock and data line (plus grounds) and the receiver locks onto the sender's clock). I have seen the S/PDIF signal protocol before and seem to recall that it does use framing bits for synchronization. I can't find anything on a search so I'd appreciate any links to the actual protocol. All that said, my anecdotal information tells me that the Dio and Zoltrix cards maintain a bit-perfect fidelity in the data transfer. I have a few of the SGI drives where "resampling" is not an issue, and I have both a Dio 2448 and a Zoltrix Nightingale, and the tests I've run by comparing raw files extracted from the SGI drives and raw files transfered via the CMI 8738 based cards show 100% correlation in most cases. There are cases where a run of bits may differ, but I attribute these to the same factors that cause diginoise, etc. as the bits appear "shaped" in the case of a DAT player (probably from its interpolation algorithms) and random in the case of the SGI drives (since they have no interpolation algorithms and when they can't read a bit from the tape, whatever is in the buffer at that point gets sent across the SCSI bus). Tapes with known bad spots produce similar behavior. There is no indication of any resampling as this would produce a steady level of inconsistency between the two streams throughout the length of the sample. Please not also that these tests were run in Linux and YMMV in the windows world. As always, my knowledge is certainly not the bottom line. I would appreciate any comments or corrections. -- Wayne D. Whenever I've been in that same situation with either > CSBs or Sonics I got huge clipping problems. I can assure you that if you heard clipping with the CSBs, it was mic pre-amp overload distortion and not the mics overloading. So, an explanation for what you've heard with the 4061s is that the 4061s have a slightly lower sensitivity than the CSBs, and so don't overload the mics pre-amps when the "yahoo" lets out his scream. This is related to the so-called "brickwalling" problems that folks have noted in the past. I hope this helped! From: Todd Romero <todd@routeflap.net> Subject: Re: phase cancellation Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 16:04:05 -0400 (EDT) phase cancellation occurs when the sound frequencies from each source (ie: left stacks, right stacks) are picked up by your microphones at different time intervals, thus the frequencies wave patterens cancel eachother out, and you can end up with a hollow, or weak sound. for this to happen while taping at a show with your microphones close together, you would have to be pretty far to one side or the other. if you were in the center or pretty close to the center, for you to get an out of phase tape, you would either have to have equipt malfunction issues, or if you ran something like ortf pattern from the tapers section and the sound reflections from the sides of the auditorium werent equal. so, in understanding what phase cancellation *is*, youll see that lots of variables could contribute to getting a tape that has phase cancellation. id try listening to your tape back again and switch the balance all the way to the right and then left and listen to check if one channel or the other sounds alot worse. if so, that should give you a starting point in troubleshooting the problem :) On Wed, 5 Jun 2002, Charles Muccia wrote: > I'd like to get some info and input from the > dat-heads collective mind. Around 11pm SPUN hit the stage and introduced themselves as "Hi, we are Bob's band". Now the cat was definitely out of the bag as the surprised crowd recognize their hometown boys. Bob's Band? SPUN consisted of Bob Rock (on bass), James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett. The band started by bursting out four Ramones songs: Commando, Today Your Love Tomorrow The World, 53rd and 3rd, Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue - "That was our little tribute to the Ramones" said James with a grin. "Hey close your eyes, we've got a surprise" he continued, and looked back at Lars. "1981?, 1983?" Lars smiled and said "OK, check this out" and then he pounded his way into Hit the lights. After this it was more old school tunes, Leper Messiah, No Remorse and For Whom The Bell Tolls. It was now time to fastforward to 2002 and a NEW SONG. The crowd could not sing-a-long, but they sure did bang-a-long. So how do you describe this new song? HEAVY, with a nice Metallica CRUNCH to it! After this nice surprise the band played I Disappear and the night ended with Die, Die My Darling. "Thank you friends, we had fun. See you soon" said James When everyone was walking out the door, I looked over at the bartender and he seemed to be as clueless as he was when we arrived. He was just happy to get rid of those guys with all that gear... Story & Pictures by Niclas S
