Hey all,
I have a couple of DAT tapes that through various means have
snapped...meaning that the tape has snapped in one location, that is now
exposed. is there any way to fix this, either myself or by sending it
somewhere, or is this tape lost forever? Any help would be appreciated. If
it matters, all the music on the tape is before the cut. Thanks!

While this statement is true, it could lead one to
believe that you will inevitably suffer non-linear
frequency repsonse in the recording. There is no
such animal as a microphone that has ruler-flat
response across the range of human hearing (+/- 0
dB). Some are close but all microphones exhibit
dips, peaks, troughs, etc., of at least .1 dB
(which you will NEVER hear) and this is one of the
factors in why microphones have their own sound
when compared to another model or brand (or in
less expensive examples, even between the SAME
brand and model). Physics enters the picture with
large diaphagm mics, as they will likely have a
rise about 10k. However, when recording in a
diffuse-field environment (such as a concert where
you are far enough away from the sound source to
also experience the room acoustics) the overal
linear frequency response as it relates to phase
shrinks in importance. Note I did NOT say it
shrinks in importance as it relates to the overall
sound. The "best" recording is the one that
enables you to listen at home and have it sound
the way you remember it, and why it can get quite
expensive to have the menu of mic capsules (and in
the case of DPA, their Acoustic Pressure
Equalizers that shape frequency response and
pickup pattern without shifting phase). You can
move the setup a few inches, and it will sound
different. You can vary spacing and angle and it
will sound different. Which one is right? Only you
can decide.
The real-world tipoff that you have a phasing
problem is when you are listening on headphones
with your eyes closed and there is a "hole in the
middle". The likely cause is that one of your
cables has reversed polarity. Normal mic cable
wiring is pin 1 ground, pin 2 "high" or positive,
and pin 3 "low" or negative. Do not assume that
your cables are correct just becuase someone wired
them. A simple TVM from Radio Shack will reveal
the truth. It can also be more subtle-- I once had
a Sony stereo mic that the imaging was a little
confused-- turned out that one channel was wired
out of phase, but it was not really obvious
because of the strong center mono signal being
introduced by the "mid" capsule (these mics are
sortof M-S but not really-- they use 2 cardioid
capsules back-to-back rather than a more expensive
and linear figure-8).
> Experimentation is the best bet in determining
> what you like. As I've discussed on our website, I like a modified
> near-coincident pattern for recording from a P.A..
Amen, brother!-- determine your rig is in phase by
setting up at home, placing the mics next to each
other (physically touching), play music over your
system and listen for a very strong (mono, in
fact) center image, Then you can start to
experiment in different situation with width and
angle between capsules. Remember, the NORD and
ORTF police are NOT going to confiscate your tape
because you were a few centimeters or degrees
"off". Duke Ellington said it best-- "if it sounds
good, it IS good". Experiment until you determine
you don't like what you are hearing. Keep notes of
your work-- venue, position, mic height,
separation, angle. Soon you will be able to
predict what works best. As long as you aren't
cutting vinyl or listening on a mono system, phase
will not be something you need to lose sleep over.
If this is not complicated enough for you, then
purchase mics that have interchangeable capsules
or use APEs. Then you will have an almost infinite
number of variables with which to experiment!

i had heard some different stories regarding service for the Sony portable
DAT decks for out of warranty problems so i decided to do some
research..here is a summary of what i found out...one thing that is
important to note that the PCM-M1 DOES NOT qualify for flat rate service, so
if you have major repairs you might be shelling out some money although at
$274 the flat rate service on the D100 comsumer equivalent is not cheap
either..there is always the option of getting service on a parts and labor
basis from someone else as well although i havent ever used any of these
different providers, so i cant recommend one over another; others here might
know more

them your deck with instructions and payment information (be ready to

"Consumer" Audio Gear
TCD-D100: $274 flat rate service
TCD-D7/D8: $156 flat rate service

I have 2 floor tickets (very close!!!) for the
upcoming NEARFest in
Trenton, NJ on June 29-30. Featured acts include
Steve Hackett, Nektar,
Caravan, Echolyn, Enchant, just to name a few. I wish
so much that I
was able to attend, but because of financial and time
constraints out of
my control, unfortunately I will have to part with
both my tix.
I wanted to put these tix up on this forum in order to
find somebody
who would be ready, willing, and able to record AS
MANY BANDS AS
POSSIBLE!!!! (which I would've done otherwise).
Especially the ones I
mentioned above.
I will sell these at only FACE VALUE + the $5
processing fee, which
comes out to a total of $179. No more, no less.
Actually, FORGET the $5
- make it straight face at $174.
All I ask is that whomever takes them off my hands be
able to supply me
with B&P for several of these bands.
Please email me privately regarding this matter. It
is ESSENTIAL that
somebody out there get these bands!!!! Tell me your
recording setup
in your email.
Peace :)

it's beginning to look like the beginning of the end for my sony m1. i'm sure
i can send it off to sony for rehab, but at this point it seems like a waste
to replace it with yet another tape based machine-yet another m1 (i've
already been through a d3 and a d7). i am curious as to where people are at
with regards to using hard disc based recording systems particularly in
stealth situations. the one good thing about the m1 is that it IS very
stealthy.
i was thinking along the lines of something like the apple ipod. has anyone
been successful in adapting it (or any other mp3 player/recorder) to record
audio in the field? for example a 10 gig ipod would have enough storage to
hold about 5-6 shows recording wav or aiff files. the ipod in particular can
handle wav & aiff files in addition to mp3's. take it home, hook it up to
firewire and very quickly dump the shows into your computer and prepare for
burning. no muss, no fuss. much more efficient than spending 2-3 hrs dumping
a dat into a computer.
only drawbacks i can see are that no master would actually exist and are the
drives themselves shockproof enough for this type of activity (it's not like
you're going jogging or bike riding). i am assuming (i could be wrong) at
this point that some folks are recording directly in to their computers so
what about taking it step further. any ideas or feedback? has this been going
on all along and i'm the last to know? thanks.

Can someone please point me to some sort of resource on portable
recording with MICs outside. I want to record industrial noises and
just general noises outdoors - like children in a playground, crazy
people. I will be buying the portable Tascam recorder. DA-P1 is it?
Can't remember.
What budget models of mics can I look at that offer 'decent' quality.
What other gear will I need.

<I was referring to applause between songs.
<For applause during songs, sometimes I remove it one clap at a
<time...
OK. This is not so bad, then. And a well defined error is always game.
But still the dynamic correction is better,
because it doesn't create the 'hole' in the recording a volume
change always does. And after finding the applicable line, is just as easily
applied, too. And for prolonged stretches of dozens of claps much
much easier!
Ideally volume changes should only be used to (hopefully) compensate volume
changes, imo. it is a little like using the volume knob to remove a
hum instead of the frequency filter.. CE has them all and using the
right ones is really easy, once you try it with some patience!
(Hehe, I know few honorable members of the list who cringe at *this*
advice, but hey, read my lips ;-)
I wrote in the context of a guy wondering how to best put the levels
during recoding a show to avoid the effect of more audience than
artist noise.
My comments were all about post processing, however.
A somewhat counter-intuitive conclusion for recording would be that the
levels of music and audience must be different enough to allow the dynamic
correction, so we *shouldn't* pump the music all up after all, or else
its top levels will go with all the (equally loud , namely 100%, albeit all overblown) applause..
hm. comments?
