Just looking for a little advice on the NOMAD 3 as a recording device to
replace the DAT. I saw some similar questions awhile back, but I never saw
the answers: can the NOMAD 3 suitably replace the DAT? What are it's
shortcomings? Thanks....

Many of us are wishing to do live recording using this type of portable hard
disk device. However, many feature/quality issues keep these products from
being practical for this purpose unless a MD or DAT deck is serving as
mic/line preprocessor with level controls and easy to view VU indicator.
More about this in the <A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/faqpg0.html">FAQ

The message below is from Andrew Lowenstern, who
is kindly hosting SHN's of
Ned & Lutch's FOB MK4V of the Trey set 5/26/02
at Mountain Aire.
Andrew uses BitTorrent which is software that allows for UNLIMITED
number of simultaneous downloads, because it actually
works on a peer to peer basis (see explanation below),
it works faster the MORE people are connected
to the server.
The full explanation from Andrew is below. He says
he expects to be hosting this show for at least the
next 10 days or so. Enjoy...
--->
I have put the Trey show with Will Bernard up on my server using BitTorrent.
To get the show, first download and run this program:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bittorrent/bittorrent-2.8.1.exe?download
Then click on this link to download the whole show:
http://gigagig.org:8080/trey2002-05-26.FOB.4v-v2-ad1000.shnf
note: the above link needs to opened with IE and you must have
BitTorrent installed! Alternatives such as Mozilla are currently not
supported... [also be careful when cutting and pasting
those long, two-line links into your IE browser]
BitTorrent is a "peer to peer" file transfer program that implements a
"swarm download." Basically, the downloaders automatically exchange
pieces of the file with each other which significantly reduces the
burden on the main server. It is of the same general type as the
eDonkey download system. Unlike eDonkey, BT is open source and doesn't
contain spyware. BT only does downloads and doesn't substantially
change the download experience. It does not do searching or chatting or
anything like that.
More info, including protocol details, are at
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent
so yes, forward wherever you like, BitTorrent has already survived
several "slashdottings" and can certainly handle it...

Hey guys,
Its my regular request to see if anyone will be taping Dashboard Confessional
as they tour with Weezer this summer. Sparta (ex At The Drive-In) are opening
the shows and they are pretty good. The Strokes will also be on some dates.
I am in South Florida so won't get a chance to tape any of these dates but I
have a lot of Dashboard to trade and other indie rock stuff.
Thanks,

Houston this past Saturday, and I was looking for some
other gigs to go with my master. I have the masters I
did (DPA 4060>HEB b.b.>D100) I could possibly offer
for trading material. These were taped from the center
section 10 feet left of the board. PLEASE get with me
if you are planning on taping this show.
Thanks,

in its current configuration the nomad drops samples during recording,
causing audible glitches, thus it is not a replacement for dat.
its lack of any level control while recording analog in definitely makes it
inferior to dat by design.

The best reactions I've seen to loud people in the
audience--yelling out song titles, singing along, talking louder
than the music--have come from Mike Doughty (used to be in Soul
Coughing). During one show a particular jerk simply would not
shut up. Mike stopped playing and said to the guy, "In the
immortal words of David Johansen, 'I don't come to where YOU
work and knock the dick out of your mouth.'" The guy shut up.

Subject: New Floyd/U2/Yes/Neil Young masters for trade
Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 15:27:13 -0700
Well, this is the last batch of my friend's newly discovered masters
which he has lent me for transferring to dat:
Yes Vancouver, BC 7/22/76 (Ampax recorder/Sennheiser mic)
Yes Vancouver, BC 3/12/90 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
These shows have not been circulated much, if at all, certainly not from
the masters, so please contact me if you'd like a dat or cdr copy from
these masters. I'm ONLY looking for low gen, uncirculated, or shows from
master copies of primarily U2 or Led Zep--but I am interested in masters
from other hard rock bands like Guns N Roses, Metallica, Pearl Jam, etc.
My friend also loaned me a few of his other master shows the last few
weeks which are now on dat:
Floyd Seattle 12/8/87 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
Floyd Vancouver 12/10/87 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
Pink Floyd Vancouver 4/8/75 (Ampax recorder/Sennheiser mic)
Yes Vancouver 5/5/79 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
U2 Vancouver 5/25/83 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
U2 Vancouver 11/12/87 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)
Neil Young 2/22/89 (Walkman Pro/Sennheiser mic)

A few people were asking about Zoltrix Nightingale, DiO2448, Soyo Dragon MB
and any other variations on the CMI chipset that provides optical/coax spdif
input. The common snags are drivers and jumper settings. Here's some links
