Hello,
I am new to the list, please forgive me if this is not the right place for
such a question.
I plan on taping at the Bowery Ballroom later this month. I'm pretty sure
the band is OK with it based on live music they linked to from their site
(still working on official confirmation.)
Can anyone tell me how security is at the venue? Metal detectors or
wanding or anything like that or just a pat-down?
ANY information would be greatly appreciated. I live near Philly and am
only going in to NYC for this show, so I can't go check it out ahead of
time with another band.
Thanks for any help.

Folks,
I have a hard time seeing Stealth Taping in a different light than
selling bootleg recordings. The act of Stealth taping, IMO, is to
record an atist, one I think you would really like otherwise you
wouldn't be recording them, against their public policy, and in defiance
of the rules usually printed on the tickets, and possibly illegally,
that I don't know. I am completely baffled by the idea that other ticket
goers owe you the respect of being quiet, if their choice is to talk.
If you bust their balls about being quiet so you can make a recording,
that violates the agreement you made by buying a ticket, and perhaps the
law, and shows no respect for the artists wishes. IMO, you are stealing
a recording, and seem to be aware of it as it is referred to as "Stealth
Recording" If you enjoy the artist and you respect the artist, why is
ripping them off so cool?
As far as the people around you, even if you offer them copies of the
tape, I doubt the average concert goer has a DAT deck, and I have never
given away an analog recording, since I started digital trading, and
feel the conversion from D>A goes against the grain of what is the
purpose of the work, I can see a CD copy being given away, but I have my
doubts about the music quality. It would seem to me, unless you were
atleast 6'3" it would be an awfully muddy recording with mostly crowd
noise. Anyone who asked me to shut up, I hardly speak to people during
the playing, or told me to "shut the fuck up, I'm recording", would have
a short evening in the venue.
Selling bootlegs is the same, except it is more clear cut. You are
absoultely violating copyright laws, and laws regarding intelectual
property.
IMO, it's a thin line of difference between Stealth Recording and
Bootlegging. It sounds as if the mikes used for Stealth taping, are
very similar to the one sed by police in dope deals, and undercover
operations.
That's my $.02
Keith
Selling Bootlegs is only slightly ddifferent. There you are in a clear
cut case of violating copyright laws, and intellectul property laws

I have a tape of Vanilla Fudge at the Memorial Coliseum, Portland, Oregon
9-9-68, opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Have the Jimi Hendrix set
too. I found the original taper for this show, and transfered the mono reel
to reel tapes to DAT myself. Tape sounds pretty good, Hendrix set is
slightly distorted on the bass, the Vanilla Fudge set actually sounds
better (probably because they were not as loud).
Now, if you weren`t Bogus, i might offer it up in trade. :)
I`m looking to trade for rare Jimi Hendrix, any leads appreciated.

When the engine is running the voltage will be more like 15V and perhaps =
as high as 18V so the power dissipation in the transistor increases =
accordingly. Any dissipation above 1W or so will require a =
heatsink-mounted transistor, probably a TO-220 type. During so-called =
"load-dump" the battery voltage in a car can increase to 40V or more. =
This is a very unusual occurrence but I would recommend some kind of =
voltage clamp before the transistor, perhaps a varistor, to limit the =
input voltage and ensure the transistor is not destroyed. A "crow-bar" =
circuit, as described in the previous post, which shorts the output and =
blows a fuse if the voltage to the DAT goes above a certain level is =
also to be recommended. Better to "overdo" the protection and save your =
DAT from destruction.

Try an LM317 - it gives an adjustable output voltage set with two =
resistors. Incidentally there is no "dropping resistor" or "zener" =
inside and accuracy and load regulation will be much better.

So you have had your soapbox and that is a good
thing. As long as you can respect that other
people here, likely the majority but not all, have
a different opinion* then I think we are good.
DAT-heads is fine for airing personal views,
but you are trying to debate relative morality
which probably doesn't have an answer... and
we certainly are not going to settle it here.
Stuff like "police and dope deals" seems like
baiting an argument, which is unnecessary in making
your point and nothing follows logically from
this statement -- it does not bring any legitimacy
to your point of view. Just state your points
consicisely and move on.
Sean
* This is actually opinions which I would say
are spread over a spectrum of people, as are those
opinions and people oppose stealth taping. You might
have musicians who encourage stealth taping (of
their music) and tapers like yourself who oppose it.

You should remember that the copyright laws were originally written as a
comprimise between the rights of the author and the rights of the consumer.
The laws were made to allow the author to have a limited period of monopoly
in which they could get paid for their work.
Unfortunately these laws have been totally perverted due to the strong
hollywood lobby. You seem to have totally bought into the line of the mpaa
and the riaa. Stealth tapers (for the most part) not taping to deprive te
group of anything. In fact, these tapers and traders are most likely to be
the ones that have everything released by a group and are the ones buying
merchandise at the shows (where bands actually make their money).
On the point of obnoxious people at a show:
A person that is screaming and talking throughout a show is not only
annoying to the taper, but to the person listening to the show as well. The
problem has turned out to be one of respect for the fellow concert attendee.
It is getting harder and harder to attend all the shows that I want to go
to with the price of tickets ($250 apiece for McCartney limited me to 1 show
where I would have gone to 3 has the prices been under $100). When I go to
a show where I paid hundreds of dollars for a ticket there is no way that I
am going to put up with someone screaming over the music!
The extreme - I used o attend a lot of general admission shows. At a Rush
show in Springfield, MA in 1986 I was in the front row standing against the
boards. Some guy stuck his elbow in my face and was trying to physically
pry me out of my position! Somehow my lighter slipped from my cigarette
(guess I still smoked back then) and this guy was grabbing his arm in pain
shortly thereafter. Not something I recommend on a daily basis, but in this
case I felt the guy had it coming to him, and he should know better than to
stick his arm in the face of someone who is trying to light a cigarette!
The other extreme - Paul Simon in Central Park. Lots of people sitting
(eventually standing) on blankets, sharing beer and food and other things
(use your imagination) with others. A great night!
Regards,
Warren

Subject: Upcoming Stuart Davis shows. Tapers needed!
Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 10:13:38 -0500
Hello again.
If you haven't heard of Stuart Davis, you're in the same boat that I was 2
months ago. Stuart is a folk-ish artist that has been around for about 8
years. He usually plays solo acoustic in small venues and has a flair for
putting on very interesting (read: energetic and funny) shows. I highly
recommend hitting one in your area.
I've been chatting with Stuart via email and I recently got his approval to
"advertise" the fact that he is extremely taper friendly. That is to say he
ALLOWS ALL FORMS OF RECORDING, including video. In some cases (as usual)
there may be some venue restrictions.
He asks only 2 things in return:
1) Let him know before the show that you're taping.
2) If you can, send him a copy of the show.
With that in mind, I am looking for anyone that is willing to get out there
and tape Stuart for me. I am very interested in having his shows taped. He's
playing all the time, all over the place. Here are some upcoming dates.
Tickets are usually $10 or so.
Please email me if you would like to go record a show. As an incentive I
will offer to pay part/all of the ticket price if you decide to go. Talk to
me about that.
Upcoming dates:
June
24. Bryn Mawr, PA, The Point, 7:30pm 610.527.0988 All Ages
25. Washington D.C., The Velvet Lounge, 9pm, 202.462.3213 21+
29. Peterborough, NH, Toad Stool, 7pm, 603.924.3543 All Ages

2. Boston, MA, Kendall Cafe 8pm 617.576.0455
3. New York, NY, Knitting Factory 9pm in the Alterknit, 212.219.3006 21+
5. Pittsburgh, PA Rosebud 8:30pm 412.261.2232
7. Iowa City, Mill, 7pm 319.351.9529 All Ages
Thanks for the b/w.

Hello Groups...sorry for the crosspost.
I am also VERY sorry for those who have no interest. This is
not really relevant, but I would imagine that the majority would
be interested in hearing about these items. Sorry if you find
this a waste of bandwidth.
I have a few items I'd like to offer up to the group before I go the
Ebay way.
The followings have these characteristics:
-Perfect, new condition, little use and in perfect working order.
-Come in original carton packed as if never opened
-All user manuals and info included
-Includes freight (except HDTV)

http://www.epinions.com/elec_Home_Theater_VCRs-DVHS_JVC_HM-JVC_HM-DSR100
This unit is insane! Record a movie, digitally (MPEGII) in higher
resolution than a DVD. Plus, record sound in Dolby Digital 5.1.
AMAZING! Apparently JVC was forced to stop selling these units by
pressure from the movie companies. This is perfect for Dishnetwork
subscribers or someone who wants to go the Dish route vs. cable.
A much better option IMHO.
This unit new ran me $800 and I got a good deal. I am willing to sell
this for $475, plus I will include 15 movies (recorded in 5.1) and a
handful of blank tapes ($100 value) Perfect condition, low hours.
UPS delivery included.

Toshiba 34HF81 34'' HDTV

This is the ultimate toy...really. When you pick up a true 1080i
program it is like looking at the real thing. Watching the Masters
on this sucker was unreal. It made the regular CBS broadcast
look like Atari in contrast to the HD CBS broadcast.
This unit cost me $2700 about one year ago. B/c I recently
moved onto a boat in SoNo (South Norwalk, CT) I obviously do not
have the space. This is for sale for $1850 firm. I am not willing
to take more than a $1000 loss on this. I would rather put it in storage
and wait for my non-boat living days. Couple of very minor cosmetic
on the rear of the unit, that unless pointed out would be unnoticed.
Professionally repainted a charcoal gray (instead of the silver) to make
it look visually stunning and give it a better contrast. This ran me $300.
A $3000 HDTV for just $1850. Great deal.
You'll need to find a method of picking this up. 200lbs can't UPS.
Or you can arrange for a truck pick up at our loading dock.

Model 6000 High Definition Satellite Receiver
http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/technology/receivers/6000/index.shtml
With the HDTV you'll need a receiver capable of receiving these broadcast.
Unit has both Component (Y Pb Pr) and RGB (15 pin) HDTV interface.
Optical digital output for digital sound and even Dolby Digital 5.1
I bought this new for $599...now it sells for $499. This unit has the 8VSB
off air tuner cartridge included. This allows you to use an antenna (on
your
roof like the old days) and receive HDTV broadcasts. I can't tell you how
cool it is to pick up HD over the air. That runs $150...IF you can find
one.
I will sell the $750 package for $475.
UPS delivery included.

Okay...sorry about the long post. Obviously I am taking a pretty sizable
loss selling these items that are about a year old. It is a sacrifice I
am making to live aboard this crazy boat. I will consider selling all 3
items
for a package deal. Please keep in mind you'll need to come to Norwalk
CT to pick up the huge HDTV. Totally worth a drive to save $1000.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I will let these lists
look over these deals for a few days before I go Ebay. I should actually
go Ebay and maybe get more for these items, but I've never sold anything
on Ebay and I'm not sure how to set things up. So, snag this from me
before I get motivation. Everything you've ever dreamed about is right
in front of you and for allot less.

I will be renting MBHO mics and an MP-2 for a festival in late June.
Since I won't have much of a chance to experiment, I was hoping to get some
advice from experienced users. Although I've read all the pertinent info on
the Sound Devices site, tips from users would really be appreciated.
I'll only be able to use alkalines (no rechargeables) for the MP-2 and
will be running 15v to the MBHOs. I'd like to know approximate run times
and safe procedure for a quick change of the batteries before encores or
between sets. Any advice on the limiter function and how to interpret the
meter would be helpful, too.
I'll do a CD B&P from my list for any and all helpful responses. I'll
send a free DAT show to the two best responders. Online replies are fine,
too. TIA
