From: "Thomas Avallone" <tav2367@msn.com> Subject: WHICH kind soul - Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 20:28:40 +0000 Will trade me a copy of this Paul McCartney, Philadlephia 7th row recording that is supposed to be so excellent ? I have seen opportunities on the DAT board, but always figured I would get a copy from my Chicago masters.....Well - it didn't happen, so if anyone can pass along the show to me, I would be MOSTLY appreciative. I do have masters from 4/10 & 4/11 Chicago, 4/3 San Jose, 4/26 NY, and the ALD source from DC. From: "john e. bogus" <mallness@surfbest.net> Subject: dealing with other concertgoers... Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 17:01:20 -0400 The discussion on this topic is good, but to me, laughable. How many of you are taping metal and punk shows? You 'jamband' and acoustic tapers have no idea what tapers go through at a rowdy metal or punk show. Usually it is impossible to get an ideal position in the venue due to the free-for-all-brawl known as a moshpit.....you get shoved right to the back of the place. Try suggesting, let alone telling, someone at one of these shows to shut up and enjoy the show and you will have your head handed back to you, or at the very least walk out with a black eye. If people are not flying into you from the 'mosh circle', then you are pressed up tight in a crowd that is a pushing, shoving mass. The best cure for this, as was suggested in another post, is a strategically held lit cigarette. As far as getting them to shut up, you can't....at this type of show, that is what people are there to do....it's simply all part of the ambience and experience. You cannot expect to make an audience tape and not record the audience as well as the band. These type of shows are a magnet for obnoxious fucks who will try to scream in your mics if they discover you recording. I've found what works best is to ignore them, TOTALLY....don't even look at them or adknowledge they exist....ANY reaction only feeds them. They soon give up and go away when they realize they are wasting their time in trying to get some kind of reaction from you. I've encountered every type of obnoxious tape-ruiner that could possibly exist, from having 'Mary Had A Little Lamb' sung in unison by 3 people 5 feet off the mics (BOC 6/27/89), to yelling 'Hey, security! This guy's recording!' repeatedly, pointing to you and waving to the security guard 20 feet away after getting no reaction to screaming in the mics (Alice Cooper 7/20/91). If it gets as bad as the latter case, you have no choice but to move (and quick). If the venue is reserve seating, there are usually a few empty seats way in the back where no one will care. Yeah, all this stuff sucks, but it's better than getting busted or not getting the show on tape at all. Apparently this is strictly an American issue, I don't think this type of thing happens in Europe or Japan....maybe it says something about the 'culture' we live in. Offering to share music, beer, or uhh...other things sometimes helps, but is usually impossible at a metal or punk show, you just have to make a judgement call. At the 4/19/02 Motorhead show, two guys next to me were yelling and screaming through the first couple songs. I tapped the shoulder of one, pointed down, and turned on my D7's backlight when I noticed them writing down the song titles. They quickly shut up and bought me beers the rest of the night. There are some good folks still out there. Anyways, the bottom line is, tapers have no rights, and the obnoxious idiots have every right. Dealing with them is part of the experience. Happy stealthing..... Thanks for my $0.02 worth.... john e. bogus PS And oh, yes, what does someone's choice of screen name have to do with whether or not something is offered up in trade or not? I have NP sending first and would rather do so anyway...

From: "Andy Liu" <dwonk@hotmail.com> Subject: Rudeness at concerts..... Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 14:32:30 -0700 Things are getting worse. I feel no love like I did in the heady days of the Dead in the early 80's. It doesn't matter what hippie freakfest show you see these days: PLF, Trey, WSP etc..... there are rude and apathetic folks where ever you go. I see it as a condition of the times. People having loud inane conversations on cell phones on the bus, the car that merges into your lane at the last moment as their lane ends, the neighbor's dog that shits on your lawn daily....it is all the same, lack of consideration, the inability to see thru others eyes and ignorance. You could tell them to shut the fawk up and then deal with the remote possibility for violence (always a dice roll) OR just mind your own biz. I am non-cofrontational and will always bow out when dealing with these types of people. Move or call security if you are worried. Karma usually comes full circle within a lifetime, so I am not worried! They will eventually get theirs, in a big way. From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@attbi.com> Subject: Rude Concert Goers Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 18:31:09 -0400 I have to say that I agree w/ what Wayne said. Forget whether a person is taping or not. Rude people are rude people, plain and simple. I have one Dave and Tim show. They open w/ Wild Horses. Dave stops the song before it's finished because some guy screams. He apologizes to the crowd for stopping, but says that guy just killed it. They start the next tune and more screams - "We love you Dave!" He finishes the song and asks the crowd to be polite to their neighbors - they cheer him. He starts the next song and back to the same old crap for the rest of the show. I made it through one listening and have never listened to it again. I offered it up as a B&P and NO ONE took it. Guess the word is out..... I have never seen Dave, partly due to the fact that I have been told by numerous people that his fans scream through the entire show. My mic stand is only 12 feet tall ") OK, you don't like Dave. How about Bob Dylan? I saw the Orlando and the Jacksonville shows earlier this year. No, I did not tape, but I had some pretty good seats. Left side about 9 rows back for both shows. In Orlando, I had a boyfriend/ girlfriend couple in their mid-20's right behind me. They appeared to be very drunk. They were very loud and obnoxious!! The guy had perfected his whistle and it was piercing. The venue was 2/3 full at best and there were plenty of seats straight back and 20 rows up, so I went up there. The sound was not near as good, but I could at least hear Bob and not the assholes behind me. A couple days later was Jacksonville. I had a date for this show and she loves Bob Dylan. Seats were in almost the same spot. This time is was 4 middle-aged women. They were definitely drunk and they screamed during the entire show! "LOVE YA BOB!!" Hoots and hollers continuously. They were bothering everyone around us. No one said anything. I turned around and gave them a look a few times. Toward the end of the show, one of them asked me if they were bothering us. Since she asked, I said "you have been bothering everyone around us for the entire show". Her reply was "Good!" Tix for these shows were not cheap. And when Bob plays a soulful acoustic tune, I don't wanna hear some drunken bitch screaming in my ear! And when I have a really good seat that I paid top dollar for, I should not have to move to get away from rude people. This has nothing to do w/ copyright laws or anything. It has to do w/ common courtesy to other human beings. This is also not a thing about age. Older people that definitely should know better can be rude too. I have found that most of the younger crowd at Trey shows to be very polite and respectful around the taping section. Maybe you paid $100 to see CSN&Y. Was that drunken jerk there yelling "Neil!!" "Neil!" "Neil!!" like he was at my 35th birthday show??? How did you feel when he yelled all the way through Guenivere? Well, i`m around 5', i try to stay towards one side, get an isle seat, or in the front row, also front row balcony works well too. I clip my microphones under the coller of my shirt, facing forward, cuts out some crowd noise that way ( i can`t stand them on my head, i like to look around too much & that causes phasing). This remings me of a song: (to the tune of Short People, with apologies to Randy Newman) Short Tapers Short People Got No Reason Short People Got No Reason Short People Got No Reason to Tape... They got... Little Tapes, Little Mics, Little Decks recording Great Big Lies. They got... Little Dats, Little Discs, Little Dubs in their Nasty Little Fists. From: Gary Watson <gwatson@sopragroup.com> Subject: Re: Stealthers vs. Talkers Reply-To: "gwatson@sopragroup.com" <gwatson@sopragroup.com> Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2002 10:24:44 +0100 > At least we live in a country where some bands/venues allow open taping. > Lived in the UK for 2 years and those folks absolutely freak out. Who was > with me taping Phish at the Albert Hall on 6-16-97? That was interesting! The UK seems to have a blanket anti-taping attitude. Death Cab For Cutie were here a few months ago, who even allow SBD taping, but I could not get a patch. And all venues do not allow taping in any form, although I know a guy who has regularly videotaped punk/ska bands with a video pass obtained from the band, but even then it was very difficult. So in effect, every recording has to be stealth, even if the band allows it. I used to tape FOB, but due to London crowds being possibly THE rudest crowds in the world, this used to be evident in my tapes. So now, I simply stand at one side of the stage, directly in front of the stacks (wearing earplugs, obviously!), and tape from there. No, it doesn't sound muddy, yes there will be no stereo imaging, but I feel that this is a necessary sacrifice to eliminate virtually as much crowd noise as possible. A lot of bands that I tape have the "if we don't see you taping, we don't care if you're taping" attitude, would they really see me taping their shows as stealing from them? Here's an example of how a London crowd behaves (taken from a taper list): "As some of you might know i went to 3 gigs of Justin Sullivan & Friends (singer New Model Army) in England (London-Spitz/Liverpool-Lomax2/Wolverhampton-Wulfren Hall). They were all great, but in London Justin decided to leave the show as he could no longer cope with the 'typical London crowd'. After 30 minutes or so, one speaker broke down, so it took about 15 minutes before the show was able to continue. Then after 20m a gitarstring broke. then suddenly, after the crowd kept on talking and screaming (the gigs were accoustic, so the band preferred them to stay quite)..he said: "Fuck the lot of you" and he made his way to the dressingroom. Now you can imagine what happened after that, people started screaming, nearly fighting, roadcrew taking a piss at some of the audience..." Not too sure about the last bit, but you get the general idea. Would stands help much in this situation?! :) Gary
