It seems to be a matter of perspective. I was wandering around
looking to plant myself in the midst of a relatively quiet group of
people at SXSW in March when one woman immortalized her opinion onto
DAT about the reason she was there. "yeah, I'm probably going to do
some shopping -- and see some music."

This same thing happened at a Martin Sexton show I was at last year. The
comment though wasn't directed at any single individual, but lots of
folks who were simply chattering away while Martin was trying to sing one
of his slower and softer songs. Some lady blurts out to the crowd to shut
the F up. Folks quickly applauded and the building went quiet. I'll have
to dig this DAT up and put that section on my mac.com web page. It really
is kind of funny.

If a loud and self absorbed fratboy or drunken retard is zapped with a
cattle prod in a thick crowd and nobody notices - does he make any sound?
not any more.
boy do i get totally self righteous and angry when thinking about these
moments.
by the way, the ignorant college boy who thought it was a good idea to start
screaming during blackbird on the mccartney philly show would have continued
to do so for the entire acoustic portion - and ruin it i am sure - had i not
asked him to be quiet.
often, people will be quiet if you let them know in a non-confrontational
way that they are being uncool. if they dont, break out the cattle prod.
big joints work too, but they're hard to use in some places.... and sharing
a big joint with an ass is always a drag. I have found that telling people
you are making a tape is usually a mistake. occasionally it works with real
fans, but many people do not understand that very listenable tapes can be
made by "a bootlegger". i have had it lead to greater problems by asking a
knucklehead to understand the plight of the taper.... i waited a dozen years
or more to see my main man mr. tom waits. when the blessed event finally
occurred, a high end $600+ date at the beacon ruined it. letting him know
what we were trying to do was a bad idea. i should have thrown urine on him.
there are parts that sound perfect though, so in my opinion, some is better
than none. so keep at it and make the best of a bad situation.
sometimes you just have to move to another spot.... but dont pack it in.
unless you're taping something and there are 20 other people waxing and
relaxing in a taping section in the back 40, dont pack it in. you may be
making the only reference of the show, and if you are up front, maybe the
best one too.

Hey All,
John E.Bogus does bring up some interesting points regarding crowd
behavior.
I tape both the Jam bands and Hard Rock/Metal bands. As an example,I taped
UFO With Michael Schenker back in '94.What a hair rasing experience!.That
had to be one of the most adverse taping enviroments I have ever been in!.
But with a Tull show, you would expect a more mature crowd....wouldn't you??
Who Knows (Sigh!)
As far a taping jam bands and less rowdy crowds goes....I was taping the ABB
and Concord Pavilion in '95 and had a very regular looking fellow say
something into my left shotgun mic.
It wasn't until I got home and listening to an incredible "Jessica",I hear
the word....."penis".I had to play it back a few times just to convince
myself I was hearing it right.
When you are stealth taping,or taping w/o the benefit of a stand, you do
subject yourself to the crowd around you.
Having taped show's since '83,I've long accepted that. And yes, even though
the couple behind me at Tull were outrageous, aside from their recorded
antics,I did walk out of there with a pristine, crystal clear Dat master.
And for that,as always,I'm grateful:-)
Keep on Taping!

Nice subject this. Here is a little story that happend to me on 31th Of May
in London, England (venue: Spitz) at the gig of Justin Sullivan (frontman
UK-based band New Model Army) & Friends (accoustic/semi-accoustic).
I was warned London crowd could be tough(talking/screaming) and Justin
expecting the crowd to be quiet...I knew trouble was ahead. The venue was
packed with people wearing NMA shirts (their normal gigs can be heavy
(punk/rock), those were certainly expecting a NMA gig, not at quiet
listening evening. I was taping (MD+OKMIIRS) from the middle of the small
venue (just 3 meters from the singer). During the first few songs I already
felt some trouble in the audience, a lot of the audience were screaming for
old classic rocksongs (they really never played this tour). A girl behind me
thought it to be funny to sing along (out of tune) and screaming like she
was giving birth. No kidding. For a moment I thought of moving, but....no
space. So, just hoping for the best then. I am not gonna tell people to shut
up, just because i am taping. Its their night out aswell. But, it was not
just me who was irritated by those screamers. 20 minutes after a technical
breakdown (speaker down, 10 minutes break to fix things) the singer Justin
decided he had enough of the gig and ended it. "Cant English people ever
fucking shup up....i am sorry, its been fun, but i can not be bothered to go
on." Followed by a "Fuck the lot of you, to be honest", and there he left.
Ofcourse i was dissapointed, but thinking of it now and listening back to
the recording...i am glad i was there...its a legendary recording (for those
who like it ofcourse). Well, show over, 50% of the crowd
angry/dissapointed...some of them wanted to get in a fight with roadcrew.
Overall, intresting expirience.
Bas

Hey all,
I'm selling these and moving to different mics. I
have both ck61 and ck63 caps. I'd prefer to sell them
all as a package. Bought the bodies and ck61's last
august. The ck63's were bought this past april. I'm
looking to get $1050 for it all (shipping is included
in that). All are in perfect working condition. The
only physical blemish is slight wear on one of the
switch labels on one of the bodies (from sliding in
and out of the shockmounts).
Thanks,
Eric

I found this on a John Coltrane list:
>WKCR in New York City will stage a John Coltrane Festival from July 5 to
17. That's right... 12 straight days of
>'Trane. Is that going to be fun or what?!?
WKRC sometimes will play the entire recorded works of an artist. This time
it`s John Coltrane`s turn. Anyone want to take this one on? I`ll bet they
play some rarities along with the officially released stuff, they played
some previously unheard outtakes a few months ago on another special. Would
love to hear from anyone in the NYC area who can pick up their signal clear.
FM recording can be one on LP mode, so a 90meter dat will last 6 hours.
Makes it a little easier to deal with.
You don`t lose any sound quality, as LP mode tops out at 16 khz, and FM
broadcast tops out at 14.5khz, i believe.
thanks very much,

Who needs a ticket for The Gathering of The Vibes??
I can not make it and I would like to get this ticket to a taper that plans
on attending this awesome event or anyone that wants it really....
The cost of the ticket is $136
There is a $12 shipping fee.
This brings the total to $148.
I really need this money to fly home due to a family illness / surgery.
It's here and ready to go!
The person that said he wanted the ticket when I first posted has not
responded to my emails since the ticket arrived, so I can only guess that he
does not want it. Not very cool because I could have kept looking for a
buyer instead of thinking that it was sold.......
Time is running out!
Please contact me if interested.

hey y'all,
I can relate to the posts that state we are now living in the "age
of moronic behavior" clearly exemplified at most concerts today. what
i don't understand is that these jerks pay $$$ for a ticket, $$$ to
get loaded and don't remember a minute of the show! maybe they have
money to burn. as long as i brought up the "burning" issue, nugz are
the double whammy to anyone who has had a few drinks. i remember an
ABB show where the loudmouth next to the system was *extra* loud
during the first song, a"peace offering" was made during the 2nd tune,
lo and behold, he passed out by the 4th song and slept like a baby for
the rest of the show.
I, like many on the list, am non-confrontational and never get in
anyones face or give any attitude if they choose to blab (my spouse is
very good at getting people to be quiet)or let on to anyone around me
that i am taping. i have found that no matter how delicately you
approach people it is better to mind your own biz. not everyone
sitting next to you has good social skills - or an IQ above 75. once i
was so frustrated at the couple behind me i shut down and turned
around in my seat to watch them instead of the show. they asked me why
i was looking at them and not the stage, i told them they were more
entertaining. they were suddenly very self-conscious. another time mr.
jerk was screaming at the mics during an acoustic MMW gig, his
"friends" told him he was being a moron and they were leaving-to much
applause.
the best bet to succesfully tape (stealth or otherwise IMHO) is to
go with friends who are into live tapes. if they truly love music and
the commitment you make to taping they will help you. remember, there
is strength in numbers. for that matter we should help each other out!
equipment snobs should check their attitudes, don't disrespect other
tapers for their choice of gear. maybe that is all they can afford, at
least people are taping.
I know others on this list have good stories, jeff travitz and
the guy behind him at a jerry show who covered himself in his own
shit, and mike thurley's nightmare taping dmb at finger lakes.
end of rant, thom
