Hello! I'm looking for some good quality shows from GYBE! and related
bands (A Silver Mt Zion, etc). FM or soundboard are preferred, but I'll
take anything that sounds good. I only have one GYBE! show from the 2002
tour, but I'll send you my list if you're up for a trade. I can only trade
via online shortens though, I'm low on money :(

Subject: SBM-1 or best alternative / info on DPA 4060 mics
Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 20:39:50 -0500
Looking for either a SBM-1 or what ever might be the "best" alternative.
Now, with that being said, let me describe what's "best" for me.
It has to be stealthable, which I believe the SBM-1 is... anything
portable that can do the job in/around that size range would be
considered I guess. So it would have to be battery powered and last at
least 2 to 2.5 hours on a set of batteries.
I've just recently (as in last week) moved up to some DPA 4060 mics and
love my first test run of them. I was not fortunate enough to pick up
one of the many SBM-1's that have hit this list in the last few weeks
though and started my search for something else.
Also, is there a good resource on the DPA 4060 mics (besides the DPAmic
site)? I've got their 9v power supply... can these take 48v and if so
is there a D/A convertor I could use that would also power these mics?
Forgive me for my ignorance on these topics... I started with an AIWA
tie clip mic and an analog deck, move to Core Sound mics, then some AT
933 series and now the DPA's... I'm starting to learn but could use some
help!
Thanks.

They are very solid decks with an excellent transport and a very nice
sounding (for built-in) DAC. I am not sure about the number of motors
offhand, but they have 2 heads. The PCM 2800s have 4 heads and allow for
immediate playback/monitoring of DATs while recording. The PCM 2600 is the
predecessor of the R500.

Fellow tapers, I'm pleased to be here today to accept this honor bestowed
upon me by our honorable awards committee. Insight and humor are things we
see all too infrequently in the world these days. *dodges a rotten tomato
thrown from somewhere back behind the soundboard* Glad to be able to
provide both, and render my technical assistance wherever possible. Trophy
and shirt may be sent to:

Please send only 48khz tapes or the aforementioned awards, no dog turds
please. (my shepherds award me enough of those prizes as it is) While I'm
confident that these awards will grace one of my mantels and amaze all
visitors to my lair, I feel that I may not be the only person onlist
deserving of them. In light of this, I would nominate GUYSONIC for
RUNNER-UP RANT OF THE YEAR.....the piece about the riaa/manufacturer
antitaper conspiracy was absolutely beautiful, and deserves worthy mention
for being an issue that affects all of us. What's the prize for runner-up?

While fishing for DATs on Ebay yesterday, I came across this strange device
up for auction: A Sony RM-D100K. Says it will hook into that weird port I've
seen on some Sony portables, give it remote and digital out capabilities.
Does anybody out there have one of these and is it worth getting? Does it
work with non Sony decks?

The RM-D100K is a remote control for the Sony portables that have a
7-pin connector. It doesn't do anything for non-Sony decks. (I don't
know exactly which Sony portables it's compatible with, since things
changed between the D3, D7, D8, D100, and M1.)

Hello all,
I recently recorded a Melvins concert in Nashville on
June 13, which, for those of you who have been to
their shows know, they play extremely loud. I could
never get my levels any better than about -20db no
matter how close I got. I have a brand new CSC set
going directly into a Sony M1. I was using 'line in'
and the '20db boost' and still got these low levels.
My input dial was turned all the way up also. I tried
the 'mic in' and got better levels, but got no
response on my left mic (which is the same thing that
happens when using my CSBs). Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks!
On another note, if anyone is interested in trading
for a cdr version of this show please contact me also.
Looking for other Melvins gigs or Tool shows.
peace,
Travis

Subject: Where in Oregon to get a Tascam DA-P1 serviced???
Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 10:08:20 -0700
My DA-P1 decided to start eating tapes this weekend (luckily at the end of a
*very* long day of taping the Family-A-Faire)...
Whenever I insert a dat (unpacked or not) and it will take longer than usual
to load it and wind up with a flashing little tape icon. Upon ejecting the
casette I always find the same amount of tape hanging out (~2 inches).
Anyone have a clue as to why it would do this?
Where in Oregon (Eugene perferably, but could head up to Portland) would one
take a DA-P1 to be serviced?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi all...
I need to record something off the radio at a time
when I won't be home. I'm trying to figure out if it's
better to record this at 32khz on dat, or if I should
record it on a video tape and transfer to dat. It is
FM, which supposedly has a lower quality than 32k, but
I know some people don't like this format at all.
Any thoughts?

Subject: Introducing MURPHY'S LAWS OF STEALTH-TAPING
Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 11:07:40 -0700 (PDT)
Yes, a very legitimate thread dealt on many personal
levels: The ever agonizing task of dealing with those
inconsiderate assholes at shows whilst stealthing. Oh
yeah, I know that scenario too well!!!
I've had numerous musical moments tarnished or ruined
by some drunken bastard(s) screaming during that very,
VERY moment in the song and *BAM!* It's like a
balloon of water exploding over your head, and that
supposedly special moment washed up.
King Crimson shows are INFAMOUS for having at least
one (sometimes two) dumbasses shouting something
totally uncalled for. The KC trademark is having the
audience totally attentive and silent during the
songs, only applausing at the end - or during a SICK
Fripp solo, like in FraKctured! Such as the 11/12/95
Roxy "FREEBIIIIRD!", but that being Atlanta it may as
well be called out at EVERY show!!!
During 11/9/01 at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville, I
was taping left side PA stacks 10 feet away. Some
drunk fuck was requesting Adrian to do "Elephant
Taaaaaalk". Over and over he did that between each
song, for the first 5-6 songs. Then he would say "We
love yewww, Adriaaaan!!!" Fortunately, the idiot
stumbled elsewhere midway thru the show.
Anyhow, the way I have regarded stealth taping and the
circumstances within is what I refer to as "Murphy's
Law of Stealth-Taping".
MURPHY'S LAWS OF STEALTH-TAPING:
(borrowed without permission from the
Murphy's-Laws.com site)
1. If only one dumbshit can do wrong by talking loud
or screaming, they will be within a 5 ft square area
of you. (Or about a 70-80% chance GUARANTEED!)
2. If there is a possibility of several dumbshits in
the audience doing wrong by talking loud or screaming,
the one that will cause the most damage [to your ears]
- or shout at the highest frequency - will be the one
you'll have to deal with throughout the entire show.
(Or if a mosh-pit or crowd-surfing fiasco has ensued,
you will most likely either be drawn into the pit OR
have some drunken 250-lb buffoon fall on your
shoulders. (BEEN THERE!)
3. Corollary: If there is a worse time for a tape to
be ruined by asking "Scuse me - uh, what was the name
of that last song?", it will happen then.
4. If any dumbshit in the audience just cannot do
wrong, he/she will anyway. Either that, or end up
puking in the row behind you. (I have HAD that
experience actually!!)
5. If you perceive that there are four possible ways
in which a recording can go wrong, and circumvent
these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly
develop. (In other words, you checked 4 things:
levels, AA battery power, mic clip direction, and a
new 9V in your mic battery box. But OOOPS!!!!! The
fifth element came into "play" - sensitivity set to
high (0db). D'OHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)
6. Left to the taper, things tend to go from bad B.O.
beside you to "Man, if this $%#-damned redneck shouts
'FREEBIRD!' one more time, I'm gonna blow my cover and
knock his teeth in!!!!"
7. If everything seems to be going well, you have
obviously overlooked something - like say, your levels
WAY TOO HOT!!!!!
8. Nature always sides with the hidden flaw, or the
stuck pause button on your D8. Or for us M1 users, the
infamous "UNLOAD > LOAD > UNLOAD > etc." phenomenon.
9. Mother nature (and stealthing, for that matter) is
a bitch. But by golly, somebody has to do it!!!! Might
as well be us calm, cool, collective tapers ;)
But seriously, most of the times that I had a negative
audience experience, the music was more than enough to
make up for all that bullshit! It's only DURING the
songs that it really IRKS me when even I hear somebody
whispers, because I'm thinking that "Aaaah, man.
That's gonna show up on my tape."
Many times however, I have found that upon playback at
that very moment, I don't hear anything but the music.
Yet, we know all those vocal intrusions that DO appear
on the tape because of the proximity and the moment
that that "audience infraction" occurred.
As long as you are able to edit out those little
"vocal ejaculations" between the songs, or during a
pause within the song, don't get too caught up at that
moment with it all. It can be fixed most of the time.
Otherwise, hey - what can you do?! We're all human.
It's just some humans (or sub-humans in many cases) DO
NOT BELONG at these music venues.
All you can do is "Tape, tape, tape". Try to keep
your cool (which believe me, is hard and frustrating
for me to do). If the asshole won't shut up, casually
move up 10 to 20 feet - just compensate for your
levels if closer to the PA's.
Just keep the Murphy's Laws of Stealth-Taping in mind.
Tape on,
Brian
