03-29-2002 Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA
03-30-2002 Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA
04-01-2002 Idaho Center Arena - Boise, ID

04-04-2002 Fillmore Auditorium - Denver, CO
04-05-2002 Fillmore Auditorium - Denver, CO
04-06-2002 Dobson Arena - Vail, CO
Missing 4-7....but other than that its the whole tour. A great tour it was,
tons of new tune debuts off the "There and Back" Album (see www.philzone.com
for setlist details). Tapes smoke, while I dont have detailed source
information, I do know that they were done by some oldschool heads that have
seen their fair share of shows and they are ALL Schoeps MK4Vs (ORTF/FOB).
These sound amazing and i've compared them to some of the other FOBs from
the tour and these beatem out. So, I'll offer them up for BnP, I dont want
to split them up but if I have to I will. Preference goes to whoever wants
them all. Peace.

Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2002 12:34:59 -0500
Ignore my stupidity. A search of the archives yielded no results, although I
know the answer -has- to be out there.
[Aside: The search engine is sketchy at best IMHO. How do you search the
phrase '20 bit A/D' for example? I've never been able to do it. It always
takes each word seperately. Not what I want. I'm a programmer, can I help
make it better? Who would I ask?]
At any rate, I recall seeing a few people that have had their SBM1's modded
such that they use 20 (24?) bit A/D instead of the stock 16. Is that mod
possible on the M1 since the M1 and SBM1 use the same parts?
Why or why not?

MasterDATs are made by Fuji, I didn't know that! :-)
I get them from www.tape.com. I've never had any
problem with them. Mostly use them when I need the
extra 4 min (124 min vs 120 min).
I have used a lot of Sony DG-P and DG-M's. Never had
a problem with them either. Never had a jammed
shutter for example.
I have a few TDK's too. But the error rates seem just
a smidge higher on these than the Sony's or
MasterDAT's.

Hey, sort of Dat related I guess.(at least re: battery charging and
security).. I blew cancelling a reservation on a 30 ft RV out of
Knoxville and now my $300 deposit has been lost. I'm not renting this
thing anymore, and picking one up in Atlanta. If anyone's been shut
out of getting an RV for this event, I'd be glad to transfer this
reservation to them, but will need to know asap because I'll have to
cancel it by Wednesday morning. It's a 4 day rental and the total
should be around $900, it sleeps 7 but you can call the rv place to
square away the details. The $300 just a security deposit, but all rv's
in the area are booked. Hopefully this helps someone. call me at 831

Subject: rude audiences & jazz
Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2002 16:30:13 -0400
Jazz seems to present another side to the question of audience rudeness. I
have attended hundreds of jazz performances, probably 90% of them have been
in small venues or "clubs" aka a bar. Often times these venues have a cover
charge which goes toward paying the musicians, or a drink minimum, sometimes
both. Take for example the Knitting Factory. They serve drinks in the main
room, a situation not condusive to quiet. They serve drinks in the
downstairs tap bar, a situation not condusive to quiet. The point is, if
you want to hear music at the KF (or any similar venue), then be aware that
it ain't gonna be quiet, and you can't expect quiet when the venue is
serving alcohol. So, relax and enjoy the music (you must stealth at the
Knit, just don't get pissed at the couple making small talk at the table
next to you). This is typical for jazz fans. The other 10% usually takes
place in auditoriums at college campuses or places like the Keswick in
suburban Philadelphia. The last show I attended in that hall was Remember
Shakti. This is a "concert" type setting, which results in a much quieter
audience. Great sound, great show, no booze. Therefore, my conclusion to
the question, at least for jazz fans is: DEVIL DRINK=RUDE AUDIENCE.

Los Lobos is totally open to audience taping. From the band's
perspective, you are welcome to do your thing as long as you are
respectful of non-taping patrons ability to enjoy the show and also
accomodate any desires or concerns the venue has. The crew is typically
rather busy and doesn't always remember to inform the venue that folks
can bring in taping gear, so if you are planning to catch a show and
would like to tape, get in touch with me and I'll make sure word gets
out to the tour manager that you'll be coming with gear. As always, it
would be appreciated if folks would provide copies of shows they tape
for the archives, so please get in touch if you have an shows, new or
old. Also, it's always important to realize that even though taping is
allowed and encouraged, there may occasionally be shows where it is not
okay - i.e. opening for a band that is not taping friendly or when
certain venues refuse to allow taping regardless of the band's
policies...I can usually help work around these sorts of situations if
you get in touch in advance.
As for John Hammond, he is definitely not taper friendly and stealth
duty will be the only way to go when he's in town. Don't even bother
asking...

Here's something to try to get these people to use a little courtesy. I
found it works not too badly in concert situations, but I stumbled across
this simple technique while dealing with one of these people at a baseball
game.
Try to play the calm power figure in the situation. Ask nicely if they'd
keep the noise down. If this doesn't significantly help, give 'em a dirty
look, which will usually goad 'em on, but will also let them know you're
getting verrrry irritated, and will get you a bit of (likely sarcastic)
attention. If this doesn't work, which it likely won't...
(Calmly now..) "You know, I have a REAL good memory for faces, and I REALLY
hope that you come to my office looking for a job someday." I was utterly
amazed when I saw the rude person in my face slink away sheepishly, the
first time. We all know that we're not going to have any luck teaching
folks common courtesy, so try that contra-incentive angle.
Not 100% effective, of course, but way more so than "SHUT THE F.CK UP!!!"
Also, I strongly do not recommend letting these folks know that you're
recording if you're stealthing.
And if this doesn't work, your recording was a dead tape running anyway.
Anybody here going to see ANY of the upcoming Holly Cole shows? (KH, I'm
trying here, buddy!)
Rock on, kids.

Hi Rockzilli,
I would recommend not cleaning it up, just dub the master straight to DAT.
That`s what i did with a Jimi Hendrix master. You can always mess around
with it later, but what`s important is getting the master onto digital,
warts and all. I`d recommend getting the biggest, fattest RCA cables you
can, i bought a pair of Monster Cable Interlink Reference 2 cables for
$129, and they really made a big diffence in the sound, compared to
normal-size cables. The highs were smoother and the bass was tighter (which
really helps with older poor quality recordings).
Good luck with your tape,

Hey all,
After all the negative stuff about rude/noisey people in the audience I had
to relate what I consider an extraordinary experience. I saw Elvis
Costello and the Imposters at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA the other night. I
was totally amazed at how quiet the crowd was during the last song of the
evening. Elvis sang "I want you." His performance was mesmerizing. The
song got *extremely* quiet at times while Elvis moaned "I want you" over
and over. I didn't hear one jerk yell out the during the whole song plus
the crowd was silent also. I felt like one could have heard a pin
drop. Part of this I am sure was the strength of Elvis's performance of
the song. He had captured the audience that evening.
And of course I left my taping gear at home because I thought I was running
late. (Turned out I had plenty of time, but oh well, that's the way it
goes sometimes.) I am sure some taped this and I would love to get a copy.
Peace,
wayne
