There is a ton of John Mayer already out there for such a short existance.
Some sources rock, while others aren't so decent quality. Mostly aud, but
there are SBD and FM. Be warned that a good chunk of the mayer community is
just that, frat kids not to technical in the whole trading game. I recommend
hitting up the tapers themselves for trades or what else.
I have taped him 5 times and will trade with ya.
I've also mixed a couple shows for other tapers and am putting together an
archive/tour site at www.insidewantsout.com.
I'm also not anit-competitive at all so also check out

Hi,
There are a few queued dat-heads-owner
questions about posting problems, which I
feel explained in detail if you send a message
to dat-heads-help@datheads.phish.net
Please read your error message first, and then
look there. If that doesn't help, please contact
dat-heads-owner, but I am a little swamped
and want to help those having trouble
unsubscribing (recontact me).
The most common error is Microsoft Outlook sends
HTML by default and we require plain text.
You can easily change this per-message, with
dat-heads in your address book, or to your default.
For the per-message, when composing go to "Format"
and select "plain text," that is all (similar on
Mac). For more details and the other options use the
help address.

That's not correct, is it?
DAT records "linear PCM" which is 16/44.1 (the CD
standard), or 16/48 (the original DAT standard),
right? (Or 16/32, but that's different.)
I thought DAT is always 16 bit...

O.K. I'm running 60m Sony DDS tape in a new D8 (about
20 hrs old) and I've noticed 3 or 4 ultra short,
sub-second digi blasts in my last two tapes. Does
anyone know what could be causing this?
I ran maxell 60m dds on a previous show with perfect
results. Has anyone gotten some bunk Sony DDS lately?
BTW, this is digital noise (bad or missing data) for
sure, not some mystery PA static. No a/d converter
for me, straight in the mic in (AT853>Oade Mod. D8).
Any ideas? I'm at a total loss on this one. -Thanks

Hello,
I have the Tascam DA-P1 and the following happened:
Connecting a 48 KHz Digital Source, it was possible to change the
recorded sampling frequ. on the DA-P1.
So I could switch between 44.1 and 48 KHz.
Has somebody else seen that ??

The digital data format encoded onto the DAT tape provides for either
16-bit linear or 12-bit non-linear-encoding samples only. 16 bits at
44.1 or 48 ksps and 12-bits at 32ksps for long-play.
The Tascam DA-45HR is the only "DAT" deck than can record 24-bit samples
on 4mm DAT media, using a non-standard format.

Subject: Prodif24 problem
Date: Fri, 21 Jun 2002 22:01:04 -0400
Hey everybody,
I just installed a Prodif24 (okay, so I'm a little behind the curve), and
found that it would not play a CD from either my CD-ROM or my CD-RW through
its analog output. The guy at Prodif - US (Plus24 in LA, I think) said
(after a week of puzzling over it) that Win 98 SE doesn't have the ability
to send digital data from the CD straight over the bus to the Prodif, so
that the Prodif can turn it into analog output. (Win 98 CAN apparently
take digital data from a .wav file on the hard drive and send this to the
Prodif, where it is turned into analog output). He thinks there may be a
patch for Win98 SE that will do this.
Anybody heard of this problem, the patch, or have you ever gotten a CD to
play through the Prodif24?
Thanks!
Mac

Subject: Sound Devices MP-2 limiter behavior?
Date: Fri, 21 Jun 2002 19:26:12 -0700
I just recorded my first show with my new mics and preamp the other
night--Oktava MC-012s and Sound Devices MP-2 (into a Sony M1). I have
the MP2 limiters set to kick in at about +14dbU on the MP2, and have a
knob setting on the M1 such that I essentially cannot clip to tape.
I did have the limiters linked.
Looking at the waveform in Cool Edit, during loud applause, the I can
see the limiting that I saw when tracking, but on the left channel
it's decidedly asymmetrical. I.e. the waveform is bumping up against
-3dB positive, but on the negative half it's quite blocked off at about
-5dB. If I look closely, I can see that the right channel is slightly
asymmetrical, but the left almost looks clipped at low timescale zoom.
And in fact the right is about 1.5dB "louder" than the left.
I can't hear anything wrong, at least on this soundcard/amp/monitor
system, but I'd like to figure out what's going on.
FWIW, the show was Mike Doughty, at SF's Great American Music Hall. I'll
do three CD-R only B&Ps once I get it mastered in the next few days.
Thanks....

Subject: 24bit A/D -> 16 bit recorders, what happens... ?
Date: Fri, 21 Jun 2002 22:13:37 -0400
<snip>
if you ran a 24bit stream into a DAT, it would
record at 24bits, unless you ran an analog connection in. when you say
"16-bit gear", you are reffereing to the internal A/D converter. but you
aren't using the DAT's internal A/D. you are running digital in at 24bits.
</snip>
wrong.
If you send a 24-bit digital signal into a DAT deck, then the deck would
truncate bits and record at whatever its A/D is capable of (16 bit for a d7/8,
bit a D100 and M1 will take 20 of the bits and reduce the word length to the
16-bit DAT standard much more gracefully than a d7/8 truncating 8-bits.)
